the Capital One Bowl earned a 10 rating/19 share for 6ABC. The Mummers
Parade on myPHL17 strutted to second place with a 6 rating/12 share, and the
Winter Classic featuring the Flyers was third with a 6 rating/11 share."
Sorry, but I never got into the Mummers. To think they beat the Winter
Classic. Wow.

Barely. It just means the Mummers got 1% more of share, the percent of
all TV households watching something at the time. The rating % of all TV
households. watching or not) was the same. Share is more important. My
guess is that survey has an MoE of at least 3% or 4%, so it's more or
less a statistical tie. The real story is which demographics watched
which program. It would also be helpful to compare to a typical Flyers
game and other Flyers games (layoffs excluded) on NBC telecasts. If Penn
State is in a bowl game not competing against the Flyers, I think the
hockey game gets more viewers in Philly.

In philly anyway. I still think it's pretty cheap of the NHL to call this
a "classic" after it's first year. Shouldn't it be around for 10-15 years
before it's a classic?

I may be stealing an idea from another post in this newsgroup but I came
across someone's suggestion that they move the winter classic to the open
football weekend that falls between the end of the NFL playoffs and the
Super Bowl. That way the game isn't competing with everything else going on
New Year's day...college football, Mummers (best quote...."like watching
Elvis on acid") and NBA basketball. In some ways it makes sense but I feel
that although it may get more viewers, it would take away some of the
mystique the game has managed to build up by being on the first day of the
year. I like it played on New Year's Day.

Concur. I love the play on the 1st. Used to hate it, but have come
around big time. Last year's was still the best, they need to have
actual rivals playing like then. Pairing up Montreal and Boston would
have been infinitely better than the Flyers against them. And Pens
vs. Sabres? Please. I feel true rivalries and keeping the date on
the 1st will make this a decent event to watch, otherwise it's just
another adjunct to the stupid-ass(yet fun!) all-star antics.

I agree. It's the right day to play it, but again, it would probably
pick up a lot of viewers who would normally watch NFL football if they
can put it on the Sunday 1:00PM to 4:00PM time slot in the Superbowl
"hype" bye weekend.

there is an open-air baseball park in DC.

It's not very historic, though. Although it's not in DC, Camden Yards
would be a better choice if it has to be a baseball park.
