Compensatory pick = 40?

I read in one the local papers that NYR will get pick # 40 as
compensation for Messier. That would be in the middle of
the 2nd round !
Sounds pretty fishy, can anyone corroborate ?

I read that in the Daily News. Not so surprising--someone posted here a few
months ago that it would be a second rounder.

The original poster was correct in questioning this. The compensation pick the
Rangers will receive for losing Mark Messier will be the 61st Overall, which is
placed after the 2nd round is completed, but before the 3rd round begins.
I hope that helps in clearing up any confusion that may exist.

Yeah, a friend of mine told me that we are getting the 40th pick overall for
Messier, and the 130th pick overall in the 5th round as compensation for losing
Tikkanen...
The surprising thing about it, is that we all expected the 2nd round pick to be
at the very end of the second round, so it was more like an excellent 3rd round
choice...but this makes it a very solid second round choice...this is indeed a
good break, and makes up for one of the picks we traded for LaFontaine (I
assume we will get one for Mikey if Richter bolts, too...). The 130th pick in
the 5th round is just kind of a bonus..can't argue with that!

I think any team that loses a Group III FA gets a second rounder
as compensation, or maybe the contract has to be of a certain
amount (like in the Messier range). My guess is that the #40
pick is based on Vancouver's '96-97 finish. They had the 15th
best record, which would mean they drafted 12th each round,
based on the old 26-team NHL (...those were the days!), but if
you add Nashville into the mix, that means they would have
drafted 13th. Which would make it pick #40 (27 + 13).
Now I will explain the Swedish economy circa 1928-1975...

Well, I guess this means the Daily News is lying, because I read that
the NHL awarded the Rangers the #40 pick as compensation for the loss of

But what guidelines are used to determine the compensation?
Salary? Team performance (Vancouver's or NYR's)? Individual
performance? The Whims of Burke? Why is Belfour worth a #64 pick
and Ellett a #142?

It is still my understanding that the Rangers get pick #55, which
is the very last pick of the second round. 27 first, 27 second, us,
and then the third round.
Someone please let me know if they have a league source that
differs from this. The papers don't mean shit!

The 61st pick is the Rangers' third round pick. Actually it is 61 +
total compensatory picks.
27 * 2 + 7 = 61.

actual basis for awarding compensitory picks was...
Of course, I would have originally thought that we would get nothing for
Messier's departure, but here we are, with either the 40th or 56th pick
overall, depending on who you ask...(and allegedly, a pick for Tikkanen at the
end of the 5th, according to my friend)...

So was Messier, and we are getting a #40 for him.I am pretty sure that the
compensation depends on the amount
spent for the UFA. Maybe the Kings got Courtnall for such a low
price that we don't get any compensation.

As a footnote for this thread, I did a little research.
Source: NHL Offical Guide and Record Book 97-98 (highly recommended)
I was wondering if the Blues received any compensation in last years
draft for losing TGO. The Blues were scheduled to pick 41, after
Edmonton at 40. But the Blues actually picked 40 and 42, sandwiched
between Edmonton. The 42 pick was traded to Calgary. It appears
that they were given pick #40 for TGO. If the Blues had gotten the
40 pick via trade, it would have been noted.
