Draft another Leetch?

We should draft another Brian Leetch type of player. Our defense
needs work and frankly I'm more concern with replacing Leetch in the
future than Gretzky. A good center is really easy to find and sign
out there, since there's so many. But a good defensemen are rare
commodity.

Perhaps the Rangers should go this route but I dispute your assertation that a
good center is really easy to find. Really good centers and wings are never
easy to find -- if it were so easy the Rangers wouldn't be in the position that
they're in. The Rangers should pick the best player available at #7; if it
happens to be a defenseman, I say go for it, despite our tremendous need for a
center and a wing.

There is only one Leetch.He's the best Ranger ever.Does he deserve to be
captain?I say yes.Did he do a good job after Mess left?no But he still
deservers another chance.

Draft another Brian Leetch? Well, the Islanders have what some have
suggested is the next Brian Leetch --that is Bryan Berard. I would
rather have Wade Redden than Berard. Redden is a defensive, defenseman.
His job is to keep the puck out of his own net. Both Leetch and Berard
have fished more pucks out of their own net than they have put in the
opposition net. It would be better to obtain a good skating, good
passing, good hitting, think defense first defenceman.

Drafting intelligently means that the Ranger should take the best player
available regardless of position.

It's kind of premature to say "ever". But he definitely ranks up
there. My vote to the best player who ever wore a Ranger uniform would be
Messier. My vote to the best home-grown Ranger would be Rod Gilbert or
Brad Park.

Yeah, he'll get another chance, but maybe he's just more suited to
wearing an "A" and they should give the C to Graves if he's there next
year. After Graves, I can't think of a captain on the NYR other than
Leetch or Gretzky, if the latter is willing.

I think he is, Greg, for the simple fact that he won a Cup, and was a
dominant player in that Cup run. Messier, maybe, but as you like to point
out, Messier spent the bulk of his career in Edmonton, and just six years
in NY.
I definitely give him the edge as best home-grown player over Gilbert
and Park. I believe Park said so himself when he was interviewed during a
Rangers' legends game a few years back. Now, he could just be saying that
to be diplomatic, but I heard Emile Francis say the same thing as well.
