Didn't Bergevin say at the end of season presser, "Beaulieu is at a crossroad. The clock is ticking.". To me the first part indicates he could be left unprotected. The second statement could be interpreted either way.
On the ice this season, Benn was more effective at what he does; he keeps his game very simple and as such makes few mistakes. Beaulieu takes more risks and makes more mistakes, but he has more upside. It's hard to say if his ceiling is the same as Jeff Petry or higher.
I agree with Gerry, that the ideal situation would be for Emelin to be taken. It may cost the Habs a draft pick to influence Las Vegas to make that happen.
