Scott Cullen on Twitter, in response to reports that the Habs' last protected slot in the expansion draft will come down to Benn or Beaulieu: "This would be so Habs. Protect a 30-year-old third-pair defenceman based on a 19-game sample."

That sounds about right.

Le sigh.

Glass half-full:

That'd mean they are not protecting Emelin either way, though.

There needs to be serious questions asked of this team if Bergevin
leaves Beaulieu unprotected.

Didn't Bergevin say at the end of season presser, "Beaulieu is at a crossroad. The clock is ticking.". To me the first part indicates he could be left unprotected. The second statement could be interpreted either way.
On the ice this season, Benn was more effective at what he does; he keeps his game very simple and as such makes few mistakes. Beaulieu takes more risks and makes more mistakes, but he has more upside. It's hard to say if his ceiling is the same as Jeff Petry or higher.

I agree with Gerry, that the ideal situation would be for Emelin to be taken. It may cost the Habs a draft pick to influence Las Vegas to make that happen.
