every customer who walks in the door asks you for the 2003 corvette.
they've heard it's new, it's powerful, and it gets the job done.
but on your lot you have about two 2003 corvettes and a lot of 1979
trans ams. sure, the trans am was pretty cool back in 1979. it had
power and was refreshing. but that was 1979.
WHY IN GOD'S NAME WOULD YOU ORDER ANOTHER CAR HAULER FULL OF 1979
TRANS AMS?

Hmmm.
The 6.6 litre 400?
Bah, I hear ya... although he should prove to be a steady stand-in for some
minutes, and it never hurts to have another experienced Vet in the room to
teach the youngsters, especially since many will be gone next season.
I don't think Holland is done, however.
>WHY IN GOD'S NAME WOULD YOU ORDER ANOTHER CAR HAULER FULL OF 1979

Alright, you've lost me. Steve Thomas clearly represents the 1979 Trans
Ams. Who is out there to represent the 2003 Corvette?
In other words, who would you have preferred the Wings acquire at this
point in the game, and (more importantly) what realistic thing would you
give up to acquire him?
Doug

No one that's really tearing things up. Mark Mowers is doing alright,
but at nearly thirty he's not much of a prospect any longer.
I've always liked Mark, for what it's worth; I thought he looked pretty
good when he had a shot with the Predators awhile back, but let's face it -
if you can't make it on a first- or second-year expansion team, you
probably aren't ready for the Wings.
Doug
i readily admit they don't come around very often, nor do they come
cheaply, nor are most teams looking to unload good players like that.
i would've just hoped holland could have parlayed cujo into some sort of
useful deal.
thomas brings veteran presence to the room, but that's one thing the
wings seemingly don't have much need for. he is not particularly big,
nor is he particularly fast. he is a clutch player which should help in
the playoffs, but overall i'm just not seeing this as a very useful
move. adding more age to an already-old lineup just doesn't sit well
with me.
i imagine holland will eventually find a way to ship cujo and one of the
young role forwards (ie, not datsyuk or zetterburg) as a package along
with some of cujo's salary. but how this really addresses detroit's
needs? i don't see it.

Kinda a bummer for them. They have paid some dues. Being on the Wings farm club
must carry some sense of resignation I suppose. On the plus side... I think
one of my customer's kids may be playing for MSU in goal. And if I heard it
right, pitched a shutout as a freshman against one of my almas, Ferris State.
Whom, FYI need it er not....was playing for the championship last season....but
failed. Anyway, maybe he'll get a shot. Ya just never know. Dominic Vacari is
his name. I'm gonna call 'em to see if it's him.
How 'bout the 2001 Ferarri? A good lawyer?
OK... poor taste. Lords knows I DO usually try to aviod that, but it was
sooo easy.

Vacari's one that I like - he's got a terrific confidence level and he's not
afraid to do things a little bit differently. I've got to add a bio for him,
but I've been spending so much time teaching and getting this journal
article prepared that it might wait a bit. :-(
As for Mowers on the Griffins, I know that Marc Lamothe feels that way - he
knows that the best path back to the NHL right now (given that every team has
plenty of goalies) is to have strong seasons in the AHL, and the best way to
do that is to play for a team like the Griffins. He'd like to be in The Show,
of course, and it could eventually happen in Detroit (what happens if Joseph
is traded, and Hasek then retires after this year?) but he's a realist about
it. Mark probably is, too.
Doug

There's still time. The largest part of the problem is supply and demand
right now; not only does every team have two goaltenders that (while they
might not be ecstatic about both) they're willing to put up with, but there
are two other teams besides Detroit right now (San Jose and Phoenix) carrying
three goaltenders, plus Buffalo whose best netminder is in the minors because
he was the only one not required to pass waivers.
It will happen sooner or later, probably later once a few goaltenders go
down for 6-to-8 weeks with various injuries.
Doug
>How 'bout the 2001 Ferarri? A good lawyer?
I've heard that those are hard to get, but I also heard of a place down South
where you can get a great deal on two half-Ferraris.
All tasteless, all the time,

And there's also Atlanta with Dafoe, Nurminen, and Hurme. (And Lehtonen,
talk about the Finnish 'tender polarization.)

Add Atlanta to this list; I was doing this off the top of my head and
remembered Pasi Nurminen and Byron Dafoe, but forgot about Jani Hurme since
he hasn't seen any action thus far.
Phoenix is in a real pickle - they just sent Brian Boucher home to wait for
a trade. They've got Burke and Bierk at the NHL level, and two highly-touted
prospects (LeNeveu and Pelletier) in Springfield, so there's no room for
Boosh at all.

Teaching and journal articles? Jesus, Doug, where are your priorities at?
(I hear ya on both counts..)

Personally, I think Kari Lehtonen is going to be fantastic by the time
he's 23 or 24. That kid has some very sharp reflexes (like Potvin or Joseph
in their glory days), but doesn't hang back as far in the crease as they
do/did. I think he's ready now, but of course the Thrashers can't do that
due to the aforementioned logjam already in net.

Yep...called 'em today to check it out. It's him. Damm Sparty...heh.
Yeah, I know, but for some reason I like being able to rent my apartment,
and pay the car loan, and eat every now and then... :-)

You know, this isn't very inspiring when it comes to going after a
postgraduate degree. You're ruining my hopes and dreams, Doug. Thanks a
lot.

Here's my first tip - get a doctorate because you want to, not because you
think it'll make you millions of dollars. If you're looking for riches,
there are better ways :-)
