May I be the first to suggest that comparing Primate to Gretzky is
not helping your argument. Detroit is a better team without
Primeau no matter how much or how little they got for him.

Personally, I think they should have retired #55 after Tiger Williams
wore it!
They won the Cup? I thought the regular season was still winding
down! :-)

Whoa....let's not get carried away and suggest that Primeau is in the
same class as Gretzky! He was never even the best center in Detroit,
let alone the best player in the world.

You got that right!!!!!!

Let's compare the careers of Keith Primeau and Larry Murphy to date, shall
we? Murphy, although not the player he once was, may eventually be in the
Hall of Fame. I've seen nothing with Primeau to date to show that he has
any chance at all of making it to the HOF. If Primeau were still with the
Wings, perhaps there might be a valid argument over the number, but he's
gone.
(I did like the Tiger Williams reference, incidentally..)

Gretzky is in an entirely different league of players.
Those are the only players whose numbers are untouchable:
Gretzky, Lemieux, Lindros, and Jagr are about the only players
whos numbers will probably never be duplicated. People have
tried for Gretzky.. but everyone knows that no one will ever
wear his number in the NHL again (bar his son?). Lemieux
is in the same boat and they were saving the 88 for Lindros
for some time actually. The last time a player tried wearing
a number mentioned above was Palffy of NYI and he was asked
to remove his 68 and replace it as Jagr was the only 68
allowed i guess.
Anyway.. Murphy is in no way comparable. If Coffey and
Bourque could not have sole possesion of 77, then Murphy
should not have it for 55. Look at how many players have
77 just off the top of my head there is:
Coffey, Bourque, Gratton, Cowie, and now even Adam Oates for
god's sake.
To sum it all up.. Primeau sucks even more than Murphy so
i really do not know what the problem is.
Ah, you get the picture. Primeau was a bum, and if Murphy
wants to wear 55, have at it! I just hope that the sweater
isn't cursed!
There is no rule about players not being able to wear certain numbers.
Players cannot wear numbers that have been retired by their teams and
that's the only restriction.
That's not to say that players aren't discouraged from wearing certain
numbers because of the message it would send, but the suggestion that
88 was "saved" for Lindros, or that Palffy was asked to change his
number because Jagr was the only player "allowed" to wear 68 is
absurd. When Palffy wore 68 in 1993-95 it was almost certainly to
commemorate the Soviet occupation of his homeland, Czechoslovakia, in
1968 (the same reason Jagr wears the number) and not to imitate Jagr
or suggest he is as good or better than Jagr.
As for Gretzky's 99, same story. If somebody wanted to wear it, they
can. Somehow I don't see anybody having the balls to do that though. It
would make a pretty bold statement about the guy. The only person to
ever try anything close to this was Brian Lawton, who wore #98 his
first year for Minnesota after being picked #1 overall in 1983. He
was a bust and looked like a fool wearing that number.
(There are rumors that Mario Lemieux wears 66 because it is 99 upside
down. I don't know if this is true, but even if it is, I think Mario
has proven himself to be worthy of such hero-imitation).

I don't here anyone complaining about Holmstrom taking Ramsey's number,

Oates wears 77 as a tribute to Ray Bourque.
I never said that there was a rule. I said that no one bar
his son, perhaps, would wear the 99 again. There are two
reasons for this: A) Marketing, B) Respect. The same applies
for Lemieux and to a lesser extent Lindros and Jagr.
I know that the teams are only allowed to restrict the numbers
but if you would take a look back you would realize that
players who try to take the above mentioned numbers are
always rejected. Palffy entered with 68 and was asked to
remove it... No one will wear 66 and no one will wear 99
(bar offspring) for the above mentioned two reasons. You can
argue all you want, it will not happen.

For your kind information, the 88 was indeed saved for Lindros.
When you have a hot headed rookie coming into the league,
don't you think he wants to make a quick name for himself?
What better than to wear a high number? There are GMs around
the league that do not like allowing players to wear high
numbers (Lamorello (sp) and Quinn for example) so do not think
that this is something so trivial that people don't think
about it. When Biron (sp?) played his first game for Bffalo
at 18 years of age last season... what number did he wear?
The only double digit number not occupied by a player in the
NHL: 00... double zero.
You would be foolish to assume that no one would have taken
the 88 before Lindros had the league not had a say in it.
Secondly, Palffy wore the 68 for the same reason that Jagr
did... to honour the year in which his homeland (at that
time called Czechoslovakia) received its independence from
Soviet control. BUT the league could care less. BEcause
of marketing, Palffy was asked to remove his 68 and replace
it with another number. Jagr will be the only 68 in the
NHL. If there is a rule at all... it is unwritten.

See above... you agree with me yet still argue.

BZZZT wrong. . do some homework... Gretzky was not the only
player to attempt to wear 99. In fact, you obviously missed
this because the player that i am thinking of did not last
long enough to wear the number for any length of time.
Here is a hint: The keywords are: WHA, Trade/Expansion,
Gretzky. You figure it out.

Mario wears 66 because he originally wanted 99. And this was
BECAUSE he thought he was better than Gretzky. His agent
said "No... there is already a 99, Mario"... and his agent
suggested 66... Lemieux smiled and accepted.
By the way, Glen Sather openly criticized Lemieux for wearing
66 and just imagine what would have happened had he worn
99.

You equate Primeau with Gretzkey? What have you been smoking? Primeau is
and will always be at best a mediocre player.

I myself wear a double number while playing lacrosse, only because it is

To Buddy who posted crap about Lindros's number,
the only reason Lindros
wears #88 is when he joined the Oshawa
Generals the number he wanted was 8, but that was the team's capitan Ian
Frazser's (sp) number and the trainer for the Gens suggested he wear 88
like the other greats 66,77,99,22 long live Bossy. Also the number makes
you look bigger as it takes up alot of the back of the shirt/sweater.
Huh?? If the team didn't want him to wear the number, they would have
never given it to him.
Who else could make him remove the number? Even the league office holds
no sway over
what numbers the players wear.

Um, isn't Knuble wearing #22, which was CICCARELLI'S number? Coffey's
never worn 22.

He probably meant Dino! Dino was #22!
