Peyton Manning has knee surgery,
is out six weeks

by Mike Chappell, The Indianapolis Star

---

Excerpt:

Peyton Manning underwent surgery to
remove an infected bursa sac from his
left knee Monday afternoon, sending
a jolt of uncertainty through the Indian-
apolis Colts organization.

With his rehabilitation expected to last
as long as six weeks, there is a chance
the two-time NFL Most Valuable Player
and eight-time Pro Bowler may not be
ready when the Colts open the regular
season - and usher in the Lucas Oil
Stadium era - Sept. 7 against the Chi-
cago Bears.

In a statement released by the team Mon-
day evening, team president Bill Polian
described the surgery as "routine," adding
team physicians "expect a full and com-
plete return to action in four to six weeks."

That timetable makes it likely Manning
will miss the bulk of training camp, which
opens July 24 in Terre Haute, Ind., and the
five-game preseason schedule. Barring any
complications, Manning should have enough
time to regain his timing and conditioning
and be ready for the regular-season opener.

Manning, 32, has started all 160 regular-
season games during his 10-year career, the
longest streak among active quarterbacks.

Former kicker charged with rape
  http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/football/nfl/07/10/zendejas.rap...
---

Excerpt:

Former Los Angeles Rams kicker Tony
Zendejas was arrested early Thursday on
charges of drugging and raping a female
customer of his San Dimas sports bar in
January.

The Los Angeles County district attorney's
office said the 48-year-old Zendejas was
arrested on felony warrants at his Yorba
Linda home.

Deputy District Attorney Rouman Ebrahim
said Zendejas was charged with one count
each of rape by use of drugs, rape of an un-
conscious person, sodomy by anesthesia or
controlled substance and sodomy of an un-
conscious victim.

Prosecutors alleged that on Jan. 26, Zendejas
gave the customer a drink that made her groggy.
The patron told authorities she woke up in a
nearby motel room and alleged she had been
raped.

Zendejas was held in lieu of $260,000 bail,
with arraignment scheduled for Friday at the
Pomona courthouse.

Judge sides with Redskins in suit
  http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/football/nfl/07/11/redskins.ap/...
---

Complete article:

A federal judge has sided with the Wash-
ington Redskins in a lawsuit brought by
American Indians who consider the team's
name racially offensive.

A group of Native Americans has been
trying to get the courts to cancel the Red-
skins' trademark so that the team could
no longer market its name.

But a U.S. district judge in Washington
says the plaintiffs waited too long to bring
their case to court. She added that her ruling
does not decide "the appropriateness of
Native American imagery for team names."

What's next, Brett? No one knows
how Favre-Packers drama will end

by Peter King
  http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/writers/peter_king/07/13/mmqb/i...
---

Excerpt:

Here's the question in the Brett Favre
saga as we wade through his request
to be released and the Packers' denial
and the firestorm it's created in Wis-
consin: How will the endgame play
out?

After the emotion of today and tomorrow,
what about the next day? Are the Packers
really serious about slapping Favre in the
face and forcing him to back up a quarter-
back who's never started an NFL game ...
or not play at all?

I think they are.

"What's next? I don't know. I wish I knew,''
Green Bay general manager Ted Thompson
told me late Sunday afternoon from his
office at Lambeau Field. "We're trying to
do the right thing here, for Brett and for
the franchise.''

"I know what you're saying now, that you
won't release him,'' I said. "But could it
become such a circus that you may have
to let him go.''

"I don't foresee it,'' Thompson said. "We
have no present intention to do so.''

We'll see. Letting Favre play for a non-
threatening franchise like Tampa Bay, or
perhaps Washington or Baltimore, still
seems like the best option to me.
