Well, Russ has started a nice little controversy in the 'Skins NG. He claims
that Carolina has had the last laugh on the skins with the Gilbert deal. I
would like to here from some other Carolina fans who may be a little more
sane than Russ about what you think. The skins got 2 #1 picks in the next
two years for a player who did not even play for them last year. Sounds like
a hell of a lot for nothing, to me. Carolina got to use their #1 pick, and
got one from Miami. Trying to be unbiased, it still seems like the 'Skins
got a better deal, and that Carolina made out well, too.

The whole point about this, is that the Panthers didn't come out giving
up, in the end. The Redskins said all along, that there was no way in
hell they weren't getting Carolina's number one pick. Carolina said they
weren't. Then, there was all this talk about how Washington wouldn't
back down and Carolina sooner or later would be forced to give up and
take some other form of compensation from the Panthers. But what
happened? They didn't get what they wanted. And Carolina did. That was
to keep their first round draft pick. So from that view..Carolina did
come out on top. You guys said that you would get our first round pick,
but you didn't. So, I guess that means you lost?

"You guys"? Meaning whom? The occupants of a newsgroup, or the team's

Chack this out:
http://search.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/WAPO/19980417/V000687-041798-idx.htm
l

If you don't want to, here's the basic message:

CHARLOTTE (AP) -- The Carolina Panthers and Washington Redskins appear to
have resolved their nearly one-month standoff about Sean Gilbert's future.

``We felt strongly about Sean Gilbert and his abilities since Day 1,''
Carolina coach Dom Capers said Thursday after the Panthers outlined a plan
to keep their first-round pick in Saturday's NFL draft, sign Gilbert and
give Washington two future first-round selections in exchange.

The moves would end a process that began in late March when Carolina agreed
to make Gilbert the NFL's highest-paid defensive lineman, even though he sat
out the entire 1997 season in a salary dispute with Washington.

The Panthers said that as compensation for signing Gilbert away from the
Redskins, they would give Washington their 1998 second-round draft pick and
next year's first-rounder.

But Washington steadfastly demanded the compensation include Carolina's
first-round pick this year, the 14th overall selection.

The Panthers refused, and Washington general manager Charley Casserly said
if a deal were not completed before the draft, the price would then go up to
a pair of first-round picks, the league-mandated compensation for losing a
franchise player.

``If we come out of this with two first-round picks for Sean Gilbert, we
would be very happy,'' Casserly, who acquired Gilbert from St. Louis in 1996
for one first-round pick, said Thursday.

----

Since your Panthers intended to give up a #2 this year and a #1 next year,
by giving up 2 #1's, I'd say they "lost", especially if their pick turns out
to be higher than Miami's. But we don't know this. That is, this is such an
inane argument. You evidently don't understand that getting something for a
player who is never going to play for your team again is not "losing".
Example: The Raiders ended up getting 2 #2 picks for Chester McGlockton.
Unlike Gilbert, Chester is a 4 time Pro Bowler. The Raiders were happy as
hell over that deal. For the Redskins, getting 2 #1's for Gilbert is like
getting 2 #1's for Deacon Jones or Dave Butz.
"Losing" is releasing a holdout player, then having him go to a division
rival, that player helps them get to the championship game while your team
spirals downward out of the playoffs, and that rival gives up nothing in
return.

No big deal? You would have thought it was a big deal a couple of weeks
ago. Like when this trade first came about. All the Redskins said was
"We Will Get The Panthers First Round Pick From The 1998 Draft!!!". The
Panthers said "No!". You did get 2 first round picks, but you didn't get
what you truely wanted. We gave you what we wanted to give all along.
Thats the whole point. And thats why the Redskins can be considered as
loosers for this trade. Its stupid to argue the point. The whole point
of the bidding war was to see who would back down. And the Panthers
giving up their '98 first round pick would be them backing down. And
Washington not getting the pick they wanted all along, would be a sign
of them backing down. Forget it. It doesn't take a genius to figure this
out. You might get a Hall of Famer with our pick. Who knows? The whole
thing, is Carolina didn't give into your demands...

i am. watching him here in washington for a year he was a dominating
player. no his stats didn't show it, but he was. my main concern all
along was his work ethic. at first i said "no, i don't want him", now
i'm starting to think he'll be a great edition to this staff. if tom
coughlin out in jacksonville was interested in him, then he has to be
good. tc has great judgement of character. if the jags had the cash,
they might have ended up with him instead of us. imho he'll be a great
player here. if he adjusts going out into coverage, he'll do a great job
here. if not, he'll be a bust. only time will tell.

In case you didn't notice, the Redskins didn't back down either. So we

didn't get your first round pick. Big deal. We got your first round
picks for the next two years. We didn't need a first round pick this
year. We essentially drafted Dan Wilkinson with our first round pick,
and I think just about any sane person would agree that picking Dan
Wilkinson at the 17th pick in the draft would be a steal. Plus, we
signed him _and_ Stubblefield for only 50% more money a season than
Gilbert is going to cost you.

I guess you can only say who "won" or "lost" in this whole thing depending
upon what angle you take. If you put it that way, maybe Carolina won.

But as a Skins fan, I can only say this: we've got Stubblefield and
Wilkinson, we DON'T have Gilbert (Thank God), and we've got 4 number one
picks in the next two years.

I'd say we won.

Sean Gilbert was not going to play with the Skins at all in 98. For the
Redskins to get a number one pick for him in the next two years is like finding
a life insurance policy (with you the benifisionary)from a long lost Uncle who
you didn`t even like------
after he dies. You cant go wrong with it. Even if Gilbert comes back and has 15
sacks it wasn`t going to help the Skins.
Special messege to Gilbert himself would be its one thing to want a good
contract its another to hold a team hostage, for almost two years. I only hope
you frustrate Carolina fans as much as you frustrated Redskin fans(there are no
better fans and you will find that out yourself real soon. What, you with the
team, could have accomplished(last year in the playoffs for sure )this year
perhaps the Super Bowl trip.WE may just get there without you this year anyway
with the addition of Stubberfield and others. So goodbye and good rittence

My only question is, if Carolina feels so strongly about Gilbert how come
they didn't go after him last year? It would have still cost them 2 #1's
and a lot less in salary. If they thought they were okay with who they had
on defense last year then why are they in this situation now? To me they
don't seem to be accurately accessing player ability!

Lets remember this, expansion is coming next year. Cleveland is coming
back and maybe LA, so every team is going to lose some players. Now,
Carolina won't have any first round picks in the next 2 years to
re-stock. The Redskins now have 2 first round picks in the next 2 round
to re-tool. Carolina is just stupid and I don't know if keeping this
year's #1 and #3 for Jason Peter will be worth it down the line. The
Redskins screwed the Panthers big time considering that Carolina could
have given this year's #1 and #3 to the Skins. I would much rather have
the 2 #1s the next two years with expansion coming.

What they said was that they wanted the #1 and #3 picks this year, but
if you don't want to do that we want your 2 #1 picks the next 2 years.
Carolina has a choice and I have no idea why they chose that one. 4
picks in the next 2 years will help us with expansion coming. Now
Carolina won't have a #1 pick in the year of expansion and they will
lose players. Not such a bright move. And they did all this for Jason
Peter? Not smart. The Redskins got the better end of the deal. You'll
be crying next year. The Redskins hold all the cards the next 2 years
in the draft. If they see an impact guy they really want, they have the
picks to trade up and get him, or they can use all 4 picks and get 4
solid young players to grow with the team. 4 #1 picks with expansion
coming is a great move.

Why such a pissing contest? Both teams did just fine.

The Redskins got 2 #1 picks in the next couple of years. None of them will
likely be top 10 picks, but they're high picks nonetheless. Even if the Skins
did get the 14th pick this year, it's not like that pick would get them the
Super Bowl this year or anything. Everyone in this town knows (or should
know) that we're still a few players (and a producing quarterback) away from
even discussing it. So the high picks in the next 2 years are fine. The
only difference is the #1 pick will be a year late. The Skins rid
themselves of Gilbert. The Skins did well.

The Panthers were apparently willing to give up this year's #2 and next year's
#1 for Gilbert. The Skins said no. So they traded this year's #2 to Miami
for their #1 in 2000. So Carolina gave up what they wanted to in the first
place. Plus, they kept this year's #1, which they obviously felt was
important. The Panthers got Gilbert. The Panthers did well.

Way unlikely, but wouldn't it be funny if the Skins matched the offer sheet?

While you are correct, in that we didn't get the 14th pick
(would have
been Flozell to DC), I can't help but wonder at WHY Carolina
would
do as they did. Peter is just not a good enough player; most
analysts
saw him as a late first round, down to even mid SECOND round,
pick.
Yes, Carolina needed Defensive linemen... but I just started
laughing
when I heard who they had picked... all that work, and Carolina
still
didn't get who they really were aiming at.

Sure, Carolina didn't back down... but in the end, they only
hurt
themselves doing it.

Maybe I'm wrong, and Peter will be a great player for
Carolina... but
I've just already got the feeling the man will be out of
Football
or a part timer before the start of the 2001 season... and
Washington
will have two fairly high draft picks from it.

Buzz...it remains to be seen if GILBERT actually delivers on 1) that huge
contract, and 2) is really worth 2 1st round draft picks.

IMO Carolina was stupid to give up TWO #1 picks in the era of FA and salary cap.
Carolina could have easily given up Miami's #1 Spot and their #3 Skins.....

If GILBERT is a bust (which wouldn't be surprising since he hasn't played
for an ENTIRE YEAR...and hears voices in his head).....Carolina could be
the BIG BIG LOSER In this. Only time will tell.

The REDSKINS...no matter how you look at it...got something for NOTHING.
Gilbert is out of town, the DL is rebuilt, and we drafted well for depth
and the future, and we have 4 #1s in the next 2 years.

Not too bad if you ask me........
The PANTHERS will miss POLIAN.

I guess they're just impatient. The Redskins don't desperately need an
offensive lineman this year as long as the starters stay healthy. Tre
Johnson is dominating when he's healthy, as he is now. The one lineman I'm
really concerned about is Shar Pourdanesh; he doesn't look so great.
However, there will be plenty of fairly good offensive linemen available
this June when teams start paring payrolls. Plus, the Redskins did draft a
lineman this year, and signed Rod Milstead for depth.

P.S.-I do watch Redskins Magazine. However I can't watch the other show

How can you say ANY draftee is dominating?????? It's a crap shoot. You do not
know anything about the draftee playing against NFL cailber competition. Every
one thinks they had the best draft. Only time will tell. I am sure the
Panthers hope their 1998 first round, #1 pick pans out. I am sure that
Washington hopes their first pick of the draft, coming in the second round
pans out, too. ;-)

Tre Johnson is not a draftee. Tre Johnson is a 4 year veteran, selected as a
Pro Bowl alternate in 1996.
By the way, since Cleveland is going to be coming back into the NFL, and
there will be an expansion draft, the Redskins will get to expose high
salaried players (such as a Stanley Richard) and replace them with your
picks. Who knows, the picks you made this year may get drafted by the
expansion team...

Russ, I know you are a Panther fan, but you should have at least
recognized Tre' Johnson's name... he is quite definitely NOT a
rookie, and is rapidly becoming one of the best young offensive
linemen in the game. He's been hovering right at Pro Bowl caliber
the last two seasons, while healthy, but was badly banged up for
a large chunk of last season (he still dominated before his
illness and injuries).

He >IS< a dominating player. And I believe this is only his

This is such a tired thread. Some of us try to present facts and others make
them up (like phony news articles) along the way. It's hard to believe some
people are so desperate for a win they have to make any deal out as a steal

I hope certain Panther fans become more knowledgeable about other teams,

Hey Puss, oops, I mean Russ,
Speaking of insignificant things; have you looked at your crotch lately?
Glad to clear that up for you.

Can we please get to WHY have have discussions?? Not about Russ, I don't
care what he has or has not done, we are here to talk about FOOTBALL, I know
this is a new concept for some of you, but try to control yourself.

(I missed an entire week of postings, and it appears that my news server
isn't keeping them on for long, so I apologize if this has been covered
already.....)

The draft is over, and Gilbert is irrelevant since he goes to Carolina in
either scenario, so it really just boils down to this: Do you panthers fans
think that Jason Peter and Mitch Marrow are worth 2 #1's?

To be honest, I don't think anyone was "taken advantage of"
when you consider how the whole thing played out.

The Panthers give up a second round pick from this year to
the Dolphins and the next two two first round picks to the
Redskins. They get the Dolphins first round pick in 2000,
so Carolina's net loss is one second rounder this year and
one first rounder next year, which is exactly what they had
originally offered. They got Gilbert at the price they wanted.

Washington did not get what they wanted (first and second
or third round picks this year) but they do get the two future
first round picks. That's hardly a bad deal. It may not be
what they asked for, but it's still a lot.

Jimmy Johnson got a second round pick he planned to use
to pursue Chester McGlockton. He failed in that pursuit.
Still, whether or not you can call Johnson a loser in this
deal depends on how DB Patrick Surtain turns out. He
was the players the Dolphins took. As Jimmy Johnson
is generally acknowledged as a draft genius, an extra
pick is generally a good thing.

In the end, only the Panthers got exactly what they wanted,
but nobody got a raw deal. I will admit there are indeed a
few future considerations which will affect who comes out
ahead overall:

1) With the pick the Redskins coveted, Carolina selected
DE Jason Peter. How will he turn out?

2) How will the future picks be positioned (depending on
how the Panthers and Dolphins finish). Will either of
the picks the Redskins get be as high as fourteen?

3) In the 2000 draft, will Carolina be better or worse? Will
the pick from Miami be higher or lower than their own?

4) Who will the Redskins and Panthers take with their
future picks? Will they be booms or busts?

5) Last but not least, will Gilbert be a gem or a dud?

This is the future, but for now no one has a reason to be down.

I'm pretty sure that the pick the 'skins will receive is the Panther's
pick, not the pick they traded the Dolphins to get.

Washington wanted 1st and 2nd/3rd picks in this draft, but Carolina
was totally in the driver's seat for this negotiations. It was their
decision whether or not to make a deal, if they had wanted to they
simply could have said, "we're not trading any picks this year, we'll
give the 'skins the picks the league mandates." I suspect this was the
Panther's always knew that there would be no deal, but didn't say so
until the draft was over for fear that the NFL would come in and force
them to give up this year's pick and next year's, as opposed to next
year's and 2000. Which is quite a smart move, they locked Gilbert up
early, but avoided having to pay for his rights by letting the
negotiations go on till after the draft.
