Neither did Joe Montana in his first mini-camp I bet. Yeah I know it's
a ridiculous comparison but I had to say it. Note also in the comments that
Maiocco and Kevin Jones liked Beathard's performance unlike Cohn. Well
it's only one day of minicamp, can't take it too seriously either way.

Montana had one of the best QB coaches teaching him. That was the best
thing that ever happened to Montana and the Niners. Other than
Seifert, it hasn't been good for the Niners since Bill walked out the
door.

They stayed pretty good through the 90s and even a little into
the 2000s. For me the dividing line was the Yorks taking over.
The last coach Eddie hired, Mariucci, got the 49ers back
into the playoffs *after* losing two A-list Hall of Famers, Young
and Rice. The Yorks fired him and two years later, welcome
to 2-14. Same thing after they fired their only good coach (so far),
Harbaugh.
