When was last time Alex Smith was told to pipe down?

This isnt necessarily about Cam Newton. Or about 300-yard passing
games. Or about a Carolina Panthers defender attempting to, well,
defend his quarterback.

Its about Alex Smiths newfound moxie.

Smith piped up Wednesday to once again downplay the value of a
300-yard passing game. Hes had to do this repeatedly throughout his
career, which includes only a pair of 300-yard-plus outings in 70
career games. He altered his script Wednesday by invoking the name of
last seasons NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year: Newton.

Cue up a Panthers player channeling his inner Terrell Owens (see:
Thats my quarterback! with tears flowing behind shades).

Alex smith, dont hate on Cam Bc your stats wouldve gotten u cut if
Peyton decided to come 2 San Fran.Truth b told..Thats after a 13-3
yr. tweeted Beason, a three-time Pro Bowler who was sidelined with
an Achilles injury during most of Newtons debut season.

So what exactly did Smith say?

This is the honest truth, I absolutely could care less about yards
per game. That is a totally overblown stat, said Smith, whos
eclipsed the 300-yard passing mark just twice in 70 career games.

Because if youre losing games in the second half, guess what, youre
like the Carolina Panthers and youre going no-huddle the entire
second half. Yeah, Cam Newton threw for a lot of 300-yard games;
thats great. Youre not winning, though.

That Alex Smith, he has some nerve

Wait, yes, he does, indeed.

Newton threw for over 300-yards in three of his first four games, but
none after that. He finished with 4,051 yards for the Panthers (6-10).
He went to the Pro Bowl, too.

To recap: Newton put up great stats. He didnt win more than six
games.

No members of the Panthers defense went to the Pro Bowl, a sign that
Newton indeed lacked support and had to try rallying from deficits.

Smith tallied 3,144 yards for the NFC West champion 49ers (13-3). The
49ers offense ranked 29th in passing, however, at 183.1 net yards per
game.

Before claiming his first career playoff victory, Smith was asked
about the New Orleans Saints high-powered offense, and he was asked
about his chances of out-throwing Drew Brees.

Smiths response back then: I have no idea. I dont care. I really
dont care. Im looking to outscore him. He can throw for how many
yards as he wants to, so

Also in that Jan. 10 interview, Smith said this about offensive
philosphophies: Its kind of for you guys to talk about and write
about, the differences and style, whatever you want to call it. It is
what it is. It still comes down to scoring more points than the other
team, and thats what were looking to do.

Rewind to a regular-season win over the New York Giants. There was a
ton of talk about Smith being a game manager, something coach Jim
Harbaugh took exception to, and Smith did to an extent. That was in
response to the Giants Justin Tuck stating: I think they are asking
Alex not to lose the game.

After beating the Giants, Smiths retort was: I managed myself into a
victory, thats all I could care about.

Seven years after being drafted first overall out of Utah, Smith is
comfortable with who he is. Hes not so worried about pleasing
everyone. Harbaughs confident, competitive ways are now coursing
through Smiths veins, too.

Rewind to March, when Smith re-signed after the 49ers awkward
courting of Peyton Manning. Rather than downplay everything, Smith
said he would have relished the opportunity of competing against
Manning for the 49ers starting job although who knows if he would
have actually signed here again.

Smith remains a polite, friendly guy. He also has incorporated an
enviable edge to his persona.

Before Aprils draft, he walked into a room where a few of us
reporters were working and sarcastically greeted us with an expletive.
Suddenly, Alex Smith had morphed into Steve Stifler from American
Pie.

Did Smith intend to disrespect Newton? Probably not. He was just
trying to make a point, without touting the positive alternative of
his statistics (league-low five interceptions, a top-10 passer rating
of 90.7).

Does he regret bringing up Newton and the Panthers? Why should he?
Would Harbaugh apologize for such a remark?

Rewind to Oct. 17, the day after Harbaugh shook the hand of Detroit
Lions coach Jim Schwartz a tad too hard. I think theres no reason
for an apology, Harbaugh said. Apologies always seem to me like
excuses.

P.S. Andrew Luck had only one 300-yard passing game in his first
season in Harbaughs offense at Stanford. The closest Smith came in
his first regular season under Harbaugh was a 291-yard effort at
Philadelphia, one of five regular-season comeback wins. Smith had one
more comeback victory in store, and that was a 299-yard show in a
playoff win over New Orleans.

Alex will do his proving on the field next season. I've been watching
the first four games and there are many standouts. Ray McDonald,
Navarro Bowman, Frank Gore, Ted Ginn Jr., Carlos Rogers, Patrick
Willis, Justin Smith. One thing so far I've noticed early in the
season was that Crabtrree was dropping 50 percent of his passes,
drives stalled on third down when an outlet pass right in his hands
dropped at least three times so far.

The team was chalk full of standout players. That's a tribute to
Harbaugh and Baalke.

Crabtree had to learn the offense just like the rest of the team. For
him perhaps it was a bit harder. The offense as a whole was behind
the 8-ball, but he more so because he didn't practice with them at all
(one day).

He wasn't the downfield option that Davis was. Even so, he was a good
option on crossing routes and slants. He got the Niners important
first downs when Davis was covered.

Thing is, the Niners used every trick in the WCO playbook (and some
that were not). It was all the more impressive to see it work when
they had little or no experience with that style of offense. They had
no choice, they had to make it work ... without benefit of off season
work or long training camp. All the players on offense alluded to the
fact that they had to learn it on the fly.

While it didn't always work as smoothly as we're used to seeing it
run, you could see flashes of what was to come in those late offensive
surges when they came from behind to win.

I think that culminated in the New Orleans game. They passed, they
ran, they did pretty much whatever they pleased and it worked for the
most part.

The Niner defense was solid, as always, but how about taking the ball
away from the Saints deep in Niner territory? The Niners took it back
for a TD and it wasn't a drive that featured dropped passes and false
starts. They were efficient, they scored and when the Saints did stop
them, the defense to get it back.

Now tell me if I'm wrong, but isn't that was good football teams are
supposed to do? Isn't that exactly what our best Niner teams did on
the way to good seasons and the playoffs?

If Smith wants to mouth off about something, he earned the right. His
team went 13-3, Newton's wasn't. His team beat the Saints in the
playoffs, Newton's team didn't make it there.

Beason took exception to Smith's comments, fine. If his defense had
overcome Newton's interceptions and other mistakes, I could see his
point. Smith simply compared statistics and results. That's not
hating on anyone, that's just answering the questions put to him.

What the hell, at lot of QB's threw for more yards than Smith, but the
Niners won. Drew Brees threw more passes for more yards, but It was
Smith who threw the winning TD. That's all that counts in the end.

That and the fact that Smith's no longer a game manager. :) Expect a
better season in 2012, despite the supposed harder schedule. This
team knows they can go all that way.

First up, the Green Bay Packers!

Go Niners!

Smith should just shut his mouth and do something on the field. Why is he comparing what he did in his 7th year to a rookie? Newton put him to shame comparing first year stats.

If Smith's stats weren't an issue then Peyton Manning wouldn't have
been courted and someone else would have made Smith an offer.

Newton helped elevate the worst team in the league, he had zero
defensive help.

Smith managed the games while the Defense and Special teams did the
heavy lifting.

Newton is miles ahead of Smith and he's only in his first year. When
he gets a cast they will be contending.

Yes, John the Niners won't be learning on the fly this year, the
offense will be better!

Agree with most of this. Disagree on the miles ahead part. Very interested
to compare the two after the coming season. And like benf I wish Alex Smith
(and all 49ers) would just shut up and play football. Comments to the media
too often come out badly regardless of how they are originally meant.
Always liked that part in Bull Durham where Cosner taught the young pitcher
how to say a bunch of boring cliche' type stuff and avoid media controversy.

Smith went 14-4 and the defense didn't score the TD's that won those
games. They kept the Niners in the game for sure, but when it came
down to getting TD's that won games, that was the offense.

The offense also scored two touchdowns when the defense folded up
against the Saints. Lucky they had an offense to do the heavy lifting
on those two drives, or the Niners never would have gotten to the
finals.

Newton's miles ahead? Maybe because he threw the ball often and
threw it further. Oft times, some of those passes went to the other
team. Maybe he should learn how to "manage" a game and then his
team's record will match his glossy stats.

People have always criticized Smith for being meek, not aggressive
enough. So he goes out, has a great season, beats the Saints and
almost beats the Giants in the finals ... and he doesn't earn the
right to speak his mind?

If the media and Beason want to take it for more than the comparison
it was, fine. Smith made the comparison because Newton's the one
cited most often as an example.

BTW, 14 of his 21 touchdowns were rushing, correct? Want to spin
some stats? Then spin 17 intercepts vs. 7 passing touchdowns.

There is NO comparison between Smith and Newton.

Some of the mouth-breather sin here have Newton pegged as a Running
QB.

However in his ROOKIE year, Newton did 2 things Smith has NEVER been
able to do.

1. PASS for over 4000 yards.
2. THROW more than 20TDs.

Still, if you MUST compare, the best comparison is their rookie years,
where they were each taking over the worst team in the leagu. Remember
Newton didn't even have a full training camp.

Smith: QBR - 40. 1 Pass TD. 11 INTs. 51% completion. 97 YPG. 5 YPA. 0
Rush TD. 11 fumbles, 3 lost.
Newton: QBR - 84. 21 Pass TDs 17 INTs. 60% completion. 253 YPG. 8 YPA.
14 Rush TDs. 5 Fumbles, 2 lost. Pro-Bowl.

Yeah, one of these guys is on a greatness trajectory. One is on a
Trent-Dilfer-wanna-be trajectory.

How many of those touchdowns were passing touchdowns, Sydnoid? Come
on, GM. You know so damn much about everything, give me those passing
vs. rushing touchdowns.

21 passing TD's and 17 interceptions? 14 rushing as well and the
team still ends up 6-10. Smith builds on a good record and Newton
will find that, as with another running QB, teams will start to
neutralize him on the ground. Guess he'll have to throw the ball more
and, considering his TD/INT ration, he should set some records that
most teams wouldn't want to have.

As compared to 1TD and 11 INTs in smith's first season.

what do you expect form a team that was the wors tin the league the
year before ? I'd say Newton made a huge difference.

How did the 49ers finish in smith's first year ?

Yeah his "ration" isn't too bad for a rookie, he will only get
better.

Took Smith 4 years to get to that level.

For the mouth breathers, what does it say when Newton puts up 4000
yards and scores 35 TDs and his team STILL goes 6-10 ?

Answer, says the rest of the team SUCKS.

For the mouth breathers again, what does it say when your team has the
29th ranked offense and your team goes to the NFCCG ?

Answer, says the rest of the team played out of their skins and
carried the offense.

If Harbaugh continues to direct his game manager to play the same safe
checkdown game then yes Smith's QBR may be better than Newton. But
really, you want Newton as your QB of the future or Smith ?
Seriously.

If there was a sudden, out of the blue trade for Cam Newton and Alex
Smith, I would be out of my mind, happy. (Slith, slith)

What facts? If Harbaugh directs his QB to do something and he does it and
does it well that is all you can ask for from the QB.
