At least last year the Chargers got that 4th win before the freefall!
Another tough one to call with two bad teams going up against each
other. Any glimmer of hope of this season having a chance would
probably require:
-Good pass blocking so that Rivers doesn't rush throws
-Someone not named Gates or Floyd able to beat man coverage (and catch
the ball after they beat the coverage)
-Defense can get to the opposing QB's when they blitz (for the most
part pass rush is a lost cause with 4 or less rushers)
-Most importantly, reeling in the playbook to the excessive level that
was done last week won't work. It has to be throw or bust.

Eventually the Chargers are going to win (right?) I think that there
isn't much to analyze this week. KC is playing with nothing to lose,
but I think they will still go with their usual balanced run/pass
offense. I think they will have more success this time than they did a
few weeks back, because they will probably not fumble as much.
Puzzling is how much trouble Meachem is having- he looked like a good
player, but he may not be playing Thursday. I think Gates, Rivers and
Floyd rally and pull off a close win.

Chargers 20
KC 17

Predictions on the season: 5-2

Same difference but I have
KC 27
SD 13
Game is tied at 13 going into the 4th quarter. A pick 6 and punt
return TD sinks the nails in the coffin for Norv.

You guys are really depressed. It looks as if SD is a touchdown
favorite this week. http://www.footballlocks.com/nfl_lines.shtml

There was some article claiming that losing to CLE by 1 meant SD was the
worst team in the league. What an overreaction. Home field advantage
is generally worth more than one point, so that loss was evidence that
SD is better than CLE. Weak evidence given the variance involved, but
still evidence.

While SD is bad, OAK is worse, and KC is truly terrible.
CAR is close enough that you have a chance to win that game.
CIN might be worse than SD. It would not be shocking to win
any of those games ahead on the schedule.

Here are a couple of fully quantitative ratings, with no subjectivity.
http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/sports/sagarin/nfl12.htm
http://www.footballoutsiders.com/dvoa-ratings/2012/week-8-dvoa-ratings
They disagree, so obviously they are not perfect, but they aren't
meaningless either.

Those measure the average of the teams over the season, so if you think
SD's injury situation is worse than most teams [compared to year
average] you might adjust, but I wouldn't. I think those schemes
overrate OAK and underrate CIN, but that may be because I've watched too
many painful OAK games and not enough CIN games.

I think depression is the only rational reaction to the last three games.

I was hoping for the inconceivable KC win. You had a chance to get rid
of Norv, but you blew it. That's what I would have found depressing.

As I wrote before, there are several more games SD could win. I hope
that is not enough for the owners to extend their inexplicable support
for Norv and AJ to next year.
