A Royal visit at Chargers Park

By Michael Gehlken

Thursday, March 15, 2012

The Chargers already signed one wide receiver this week.

They hope not to stop there.

Eddie Royal visited San Diego on Thursday, meeting with team staff and
then undergoing a physical around noon. The free agent, who's spent the
first fours years of his career in Denver, projects as a No. 4 wide
receiver and punt returner.

A physical is usually a sign that a contract is all but complete. For a
player with an injury history — Royal dealt last year with groin and toe
injuries before suffering a concussion — it's typically the final step
before a contract is formally offered.

In 2010, Royal caught 59 passes for 627 yards and three touchdowns. The
slot man ranked third among wide receivers with an average of 6.9 yards
after the catch. His best season came in 2008 when he totaled 91
receptions, 980 yards and five scores as a rookie.

Royal has averaged 11.9 yards per punt return since entering the league,
third in the NFL over that span.

On Tuesday, the Chargers reached a four-year contract with wide receiver
Robert Meachem. He signed Wednesday.

Royal would join Meachem, Malcom Floyd and Vincent Brown as the team's
primary wide receivers.
