NOTEBOOK: Scifres punts in pain; Buc hospitalized

TAMPA, Fla. — Mike Scifres took the brunt of a blocked punt in the
second quarter.
The Chargers punter absorbed a collision from Buccaneers linebacker
Dekoda Watson, suffering an ankle injury to his right kicking leg.
In visible pain, Scifres was attended to on the field before walking
gingerly to the sideline under his own power. He attempted practice
punts against the net and admitted it “didn't feel great.”
He still trotted out for his next punt, launching the third-quarter kick
55 yards from the Chargers' own 9-yard line. It netted 50 yards after a
short Roscoe Parrish return.
“I’ll start with Mike and I’ll go through the entire roster,” Turner
said. “They’re as tough of guys as you’re going to be around, mentally
and physically. Could he have stayed on the bench and said, ‘I can’t
punt'? He could have; we could have done something else. That’s not the
type of guy he is. That’s not the type of guys we have.”
Nick Novak is the backup option.
The kicker did some punting in high school and takes reps in practice.
He said his punt might have fallen somewhere between 45 and 52 yards.
Fortunately for the Chargers, they didn't have to find out.
“You've just got to get through it,” Scifres said. “Everybody else is
out here getting through something. … Do what you can and hope for the
best.”
Scary moment
A legal helmet-to-helmet collision between Chargers running back Ryan
Mathews and Buccaneers linebacker Quincy Black sent the game to a
standstill.
Black was on the field for several minutes after making the
third-quarter tackle. He was immobilized and placed onto a stretcher
with a neck injury before being transported to a local hospital for
observation.
The fifth-year veteran was discharged Sunday night.
“It’s sad ... to see something like that,” Mathews said of the injury.
“I'll say all my prayers and everything to go out to him and his family.”
Nuts 'n' Bolts
• Gates has 80 career touchdown receptions, tying him with Hall of Fame
wide receiver Lance Alworth for the most in franchise history.
• The Chargers held Doug Martin to 36 yards on 13 carries in the second
half despite playing without starting nose tackle Aubrayo Franklin. He
injured his knee late in the second quarter and will have an MRI on
Monday. “I made a tackle and got up,” Franklin said. “It just felt sore,
and I didn't feel like I had any power in it.”
• Outside linebacker Melvin Ingram (knee), Scifres (ankle), wide
receiver Eddie Royal (hand) and guard Tyronne Green (rib) were the other
Chargers players with reported injuries.
