Gabriel traded to Patriots
September 2nd, 2006
The Raiders traded a wide receiver Saturday, but not the one you
might expect.
Doug Gabriel, who had assumed the starting position from Jerry
Porter, was traded to the New England Patriots, a team spokesman said. He
did not yet have the compensation.
Gabriel, in his fourth year out of Central Florida, had 37 receptions
for 554 yards and three touchdowns last season. He had 33 receptions for 551
yards and two touchdowns in 2004.
The Patriots, with starting receiver Deion Branch in a rancorous
holdout, were in the market for a receiver. The Seattle Seahawks were
reportedly interested in dealing for Branch.
Gabriel's departure would seem to leave the door open for Porter, who
has requested a trade, to move back into the starting lineup.
More details as they emerge . . .

Bro, I'm not freakin' for sure, I am just a huge D.G. fan, have been
for a while. Both he and Curry. I am not a fan of Jerry Porter, and
Curry is questonable. I also have a high regard for Al Whitted and
Johnny Morant, so I know we are deep at WR.
But heaven forbid that Moss gets injured, Porter is over rated, Curry
in less than 100%, then what are we left with? TE.

I think it's hard to say he's better than Porter. JP fell out of favor, as
every one knows and DG surpassed him on the depth chart. DG can get open
and he is a good all-purpose WR. He does well with the WC, short-yardage
passes and catches many of the deep balls thrown his way. I'm sorry to see
him go, especially since we didn't even know he was on the block. I think
he'll do well in NE.

We got Tom Brady to admit that it was a fumble.
And Walt Coleman's credit card numbers.
So all is not lost.
Now where did I put that bong?

Yeah, I miss the ESPN Sega games. Every now and then I'll put an old
copy in and then get pissed since Gannon is gone.
Well...back to my bong.
I've seen a few places now that it is 5th round pick. You know, I was
sitting there watching Seattle hand us our ass in the last preseason
game and thinking about what we need to address our immediate needs and
it's funny, a fifth round pick never crossed my mind.
I might compromise and wait until the season is over, when it gets
cheap.

A fifth for DG is a steal.
I'll see it to believe it.
It shouldn't be less than a third, hopefully a second... or someone in the
Raider office is on crack.

You mean... a *Patriot infiltrator spiked Al's Metamucil?! This means
WAR!!!

The only reason this makes any sense at all is an olive branch to
Porter... or they think Curry is the shit and won't get injured again.
If Porter remains in the Raider dog house, this is borderline dementia...
especially if the 5th rounder is true. Why trade a starter for a person
that almost certainly will end up as a backup at best?
Gabriel will make a killing in NE. FF players should hop on this.

I do not concur. So, I suppose we're stuck.
I'm pretty bummed if true. Gabriel has both the potential and work
ethic to be a star wide receiver in this league. To give him to the
Pats of all teams for even a second round pick would be a foolish move.
-JC
Meaning he *is* worth a fifth-rounder, I take it. I half-assed agree with
this. When you look at the WRs in trades this year, many were for first day
picks or involved players taken in the first round. Gabriel hasn't really
shown any thing other than potential, primarily because he's been the #3 or
#4 WR for so long. He's pretty good, but is he first-day good? Probably
not. I hope it's a fourth-rounder instead! 8^)

If the Raiders swung a second round pick, then they're a bunch of friggin'
geniuses! I already stated my opinion about six hours ago that I don't
think they'll get more than a fourth-rounder for him. What did he have left
on his contract? A year? Two and one voidable? You're right, he's a lunch
box type of player that comes in and wants to work. He will do extremely
well in the *Pats' system and Bill will love this guy.
It's a different story for Porter: he would merit a first-day pick for
certain, IMO. Reportedly, a bunch of teams were interested in him, just
didn't want to pay that compensation package of a first-rounder and $4M. If
you have lots of depth at a position, you might as well take advantage of it
and get what you can for the future. If they are successful in diffusing
Porter's gripes in the process, then all the better. That said, Shell has
already denied Porter's ascension to #2 by saying, "We haven't made that
decision yet. He's a player. He'll play when we tell him to." LMAO, gotta
love Art Shell!!
--RFM
It would have been nice if we had played Porter instead of giving
Gabriel all the work though. I just don't get this trade at all. The
timing is bizarre and doesn't help the team in any way IMO. We needed
that depth at receiver, especially given how injury prone we are at the
position. It's going to take me a while to process this. I had real
high hopes for Gabriel. And shit, if trading him was a goal, why to the
Pats of all teams?
-JC
Absolutely. The timing was weird. That's one of the reasons that I figured
(hoped) that it was part of a bigger plan to land DT or RB help. Or hell,
now LB help. Like Gary mentioned earlier, maybe it was a peace-offering to
Porter. It sucks when the second-best WR on the team is playing behind a
guy who's arguably less-talented. This doesn't sound like an Art decision.
This has Davis and Lombardi written all over it. You'd think that trading
away the depth at WR would be done for help *this* season, not next.
--RFM
I am a Patriots fan who has somehow leaked out of your kill-file. From my
perspective, you guys were jobbed.
He pretty much did in the post-game interview.
Okay, so I concur then. I think Pats Fans coined the phase -neener
neener-.

That's a great point... why are we helping the fucking Patriots out?
This is one of the worst trades I can remember, unless we got a second
rounder.
I'd rather eat a player than help the Patriots. What were they going to
do at WR if not for the Raiders?

Gary
I just got Gabriel in the 11th round ;).
