Why don't these guys ever turn around to look for the damn ball? All
those long looping passes are up for grabs if they'd just turn around and
look for the ball. Isn't this the reason we have so few picks? Who teaches
them?

that is a tactic some coaches teach. wait for the catch and then slap it
away.
it's to prevent the DB being looked off with a fake.
what is most annoying is some refs think if you don't look back and the WR
stops causing a collision it's PI "because the DB never looked back"

With Rex blitzing so many on every play without ever getting to the
QB, whoever is back in pass coverage is alone, naked, running to get
somewhere as fast as he can, with zero margin of error, and doesn't
have time to turn around to enjoy the sights.

As I've noted before, this is the big failing in the D this year
compared to last.

Last year Rex's D confused opposing QBs so much that they had the
lowest completion % in the league -- and the second-lowest yards per
catch on what they did complete. That equals domination.

This year opposing QBs still have the lowest lowest completion % in
the league -- but the opposing OCs have figured out how to get huge
yardage on completions against that blitzing, the Jets are at the
league bottom.

Look what Martz just did with Cutler, who ain't exactly Peyton or Tom
or Phil or Drew -- 3 td passes from over 25 yards out, and 16 yards
per completion for the game. The worst number in the league for any
team for the full season is 13 yards.

Rex had better come out with pass defense version 2.0 for the
playoffs. The warrantly on last year's version has expired.

Most likely they are in some kind of man coverage, almost definitely and
they are going full speed to pick up a guy who already has a head start and
knows where he is going...they don't...this is the hardest thing any D back
could be asked to do.

Brady after the NE game explicitly said they were able to take
advantage of the Jets man coverage to get mismatches.

Cutler said this after last week's game...

~~
"They're playing press coverage and we know we're going to have to
take a few shots," said Cutler, who finished 13 of 25 for 215 yards.
"With our speed, we knew that it would be hard for them to keep up,
and when they're face-guarding like that, I'm going to put it right on
them and let the receiver make a play. It's really hard to stop."

... he ain't Brady, but he's got a smart OC.

It looks like Rex is finally getting the message -- the Post reports
he is about willing to risk being disinherited by Buddy...

... This year, the second season in Ryan's system, the defense figured
to be better than last year's for a couple of reasons. First, the
players would be more familiar with what to do and second, the Jets
improved themselves in the secondary, upgrading themselves with
cornerback Antonio Cromartie, safety Brodney Pool and first-round
draft pick Kyle Wilson.

The Jets made those moves because they felt a shaky secondary was all
that kept them from getting to the Super Bowl last year. In the second
half of the AFC Championship Game, the Colts' Peyton Manning exposed
the Jets' lack of depth in the secondary, repeatedly torching
cornerback Lito Sheppard.

The Jets, too, terrorized opposing quarterbacks last year with Ryan's
complex disguised blitzes using defensive backs. Remember that first
game against the Patriots when Tom Brady was hit more than 20 times by
the blitz-crazy Jets defense?

When was the last time you saw that kind of defensive destruction this
season?

A problem for the Jets this year is that teams have caught on and up
to their blitzes, which have been stymied by max protection and have
left the Jets vulnerable to big plays on third downs.

A year ago, the Jets defense feasted on opposing offenses in third-and-
long. This year, they're getting torched because the blitzes aren't
getting to the quarterbacks in time and the front seven simply doesn't
produce a lot of pressure.

This has forced Ryan to back off at times with his blitzes and drop
added players into zone coverage -- a tactic once thought to be
sacrilege for Ryan.

Jets defensive tackle Trevor Pryce, who also played for Ryan in
Baltimore, once joked when speaking of Rex and his twin brother Rob,
the Browns defensive coordinator, that whoever of the two played zone
defense first was "out of the will" of their father, Buddy Ryan....
