Michal Vick had a statement about the officiating.

"I felt like I got hit late," Vick said afterward. "No flag. Broke my
hand. That’s it. Trying to protect myself. Didn’t get a flag. And
that’s pretty much been the story for the last three weeks. Obviously,
at some point something catastrophic is going to happen, and I broke
my hand."

"Everybody saw the game," Vick said. "I’m on the ground constantly.
All the time. Every time I throw the ball, in all my highlights and
just watching film in general, every time I throw the ball, I’m on the
ground, getting hit in the head, and I don’t know why I don’t get the
15-yard flags like everybody else does."

Two things to consider here...

1. Vick gets his head kicked in because his line does not protect him
very well, his style of play, and he is not a very big guy... If I
recall, his minor head injury came from him getting his head bounced
off the helmet of his line guy in a perfectly legal play...

2. Vick does have a point here in that the officating has not been
consistent. Not just with throwing the flag for ruffing the qb, but
for everything else... Last week, the refs gave Dallas a TD instead
of Cro getting a touch-back and there was no "review". Holding and PI
has been a joke too.

The officiating has been a horrendous. It is a serious distraction.
This is supposed to be the NFL... A billion dollar industry... The
officials look like the Keystone Cops.

He is not the ordinary QB...but the rules are the rules...and should be
consistent. They are not. He sounds like he is whining, but he does get
treated differently because he is a threat to run. They don't look at him
like the stiff legged QB trying to avoid being killed, and when he gets hit
they let things slide some. I'd imagine he is getting constantly told to
stay in the pocket by his coaches and is also being told it will keep him in
the game longer...well, I'm not so sure that is the case with a guy the size
of Vick...he may need to move to stay alive. Either way...I've watched all
their games and I think he has a point. I do not think he was referring to
the concussion play...he gets a lot of hits that would be called for some
QB's. If he is still in the tackle box...the penalties should still come as
stated by the rules.

Papa, I'm guessing you're using Windows Live as your newsreader? Me too.
One of the glaring omissions is the

">>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>on each line of quoted text. I've
already been scolded by geeks in other NG's.

Because of >>>>> not being there, it's a pain to read what you've wrote in
responses. There's no fix for it by the way.

What I've been doing is manually adding >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

right under the original message I respond to.

I don't think he's whining. I think there is a pattern that has
developed, and the officials are just not applying the fairness rule.
He's not a running back when he's in the pocket, and they shouldn't
let LBs tee off on him after the release. I mean come on, this league
has a serious problem without its top talent on the field. You might
as well watch preseason matches all year.

It's not whining or special treatment to just call it fair and call it
by the book.

He apologized today. Said he should not have questioned the refs. Honestly
though...I think
they do have a different standard for guys like him...they will allow hits
on him because he can be
a running threat.

same deal with favre... i have seen him take hits that would have
coaxed a whole load of yellow laundry on the field if those sort of
hits were made on other qb's. the saints won the afc champ game and
made it to the superbowl in part because the officials did not hit
them with 15 yarders for going low on favre or hitting him late.

i think there should be a new flag color for ruffing brady. one that
is special for him. they should throw a brady exclusive pink flag for
ruffing him.

I think the play suspected in his hand injury is on a hit by Canty. He
came in late and high. No flag.

Contrast that to the flag thrown on Wilkerson for his "hit" on Jason
Campbell and there is no comparison.

You're right - there is NO consistency in how these plays are being
called.

Or by crew to crew....the game last night had some hits in it that would
have been penalties against either of the two biggest names playing
QB....one is not playing now...but I have gone back to look at things I
taped, and it is just not the same from officiating crew to crew or from how
one QB gets treated to how another is. If the QB is still in that box...the
flags need to start flying OR....let them just be football players again,
stop the flags completely, but this system is wrong. The first step should
be fulltime professional officials who can be replaced when they screw up,
and with a backup system ready.
