The O line....

Any rational analysis of this team must take a good look at decisions made
regarding one of the most critical aspects of offense...the line. They go
out and get new receivers for Sanchez to throw at. The go after some new D
players and probably alienate Cromartie to some extent with all the talk
about getting his replacement. They talk talk talk about skill
positions...where the Hell was ANY thought given to who was playing on the O
line? They have consistently let it slide over the last few years. When
Mangold went down and they had some success with Baxter I posted it was time
to see which one of those RB's or somebody was trade bait to bolster the O
line...they did nothing. They will not make it through a season without
doing something. Vlad is beyond terrible...Hunter is awful....Brick and
Mangold are good....the others are starting to look very pedestrian or just
serviceable...they need to do something big now...there has got to be
someone better than Hunter out there. Baxter looks good for a rookie...he's
too small to play out there and needs the help he can get from where he was
playing...but damn...he is way better than the other so called starters or
replacements....they have NO good replacements...these guys are not even
second string level. Lets start a pool about when Sanchez goes out for the
season..and then Father Time gets to play.

You're right, they've consistently let the OL slide. That's on Rex and Tanny and the front office. No ducking that responsibility.

IMHO, if you have an OL that can hold the line of scrimmage, you always have a chance. You can run your plays and it is up the coaches to see what they can get out of them.

But if your OL gets physically crushed, like ours did in the 3rd Q today, there is nothing you can do.

You can stamp your foot like Rumplestiltskin out of anger and frustration, it won't help. You can use a medium to bring back an O coaching staff of Paul Brown, Weeb Ewbank, Sid Gillman, Bill Walsh, Don Coryell, with Vince Lombardi as a consultant -- but with your skill players getting smashed behind the line on every play, it won't help.

That's the difference an OL makes.

The thing is, you *don't* have to spend huge amounts of cap money and top draft picks to get good OL players, especially guards. You just have to make the effort to bring in enough credible candidates and sort through them until you are damn sure you've got what you need. And we already had LT and C locked up for years.

So letting the other three spots slide so much is both inexplicable and unforgiveable, IMHO.

the line got "crushed" in the third quarter, but what was happening
when the jets were up by two scores ??? what was happening when the
jets started producing in the fourth quarter and nearly made a game of
it at the last minute ??? the entire offense was getting "crushed"
because it was being set up to be crushed by an idiot that has no idea
how to best use his manpower. the same line that got "crushed" was
the same line that was moving the ball and had them looking like
they'd take home an easy one until our brain trust hozed down the
offense... AGAIN. there are ways to win with an under-sized offensive
line. there are ways to win with a large, slow offensive line... you
need a qualified offensive coach to work those things out. the jets
dont have one.

We agree...from what I've seen so far in pre-season and the three
games...this O line is not fixable as a unit with the people they have
avialable...they need someone who can do as you said and give it the
minimum...hold their ground...this is horrendous...what other teams saw
tonight is don't worry too much about Holmes, Plax or anybody...just go
after the QB because they can not protect him, and the OC does not game plan
to get you off of him...maybe he even can't now with the less than NFL
quality O line.

Papa, a veteran might have been brought in but is there anyone that
doesn't need line help? By the way the rookie weighs 295. It isn't
ideal but you realize he is our 4th string? You expect depth at that
level. The Hunter criticism may be fair & if Ducasse is a bust & they
still kept him around shame on them.

We lost a few guys to FA because we were working to keep others. It
isn't like we spent $ any place but our own.

Well...you are one of the very few who think their actions regarding the O
line are sound. I'd start with a FOUNDATION...the O line is just that...and
their foundation is the weakest part of the team.

Here were our FA. I would have loved to see someone brought in to
compete (be better than Hunter) but we had holes that they prevented
form forming elsewhere. Who could have foreseen all these injuries to
the OL? I guess I am saying that overall they did OK.

It wasn't just this year....the O line has been in decline...it's a pattern
! What I'm saying now is take Joe McKnight or somebody who supposedly has

Maybe this explains what all the pre season hype about opening it up was
about...Rex was saying they are letting it loose etc. It was really talk
because they knew they had no running game, and the only alternative was to
throw the ball...and they were hoping Sanchez would come around? That's
what it looks like now.
