OT: A coach actually can leave on good terms (though it's more common to stay on bad).

John Fox goes 2-14 in Carolina, everbody knows he's departing at the
end of the season, during the last few games the fans hang up banners,
"Thank you, John", "Good Luck", the owner has nothing but good things
to say about him, he walks right into a new job with Denver.

Wow. The fired coach of a collapsing team can be treated as a human
being, everybody agreeing he did a good job in spite of an awful won-
lost record, it was the situation not him. How often do you see that
with a 2-14 coach?

More typical: The Times yesterday had a story on Les Miles who at LSU
in six years is 62-17 with a National Championship -- and how he is
being savaged by fans and boosters for winning *only* that much, has
been publicly criticized for not winning enough by adminstrators in
his own LSU athletic department, and has had to have his chidren get
counseling to deal with the attacks on them for being his kids, and
the attacks on him.

Bobby Hebert, the former NFL QB, now a New Orleans sports radio host
and Miles defender, is quoted:"“Somebody has got to educate these
fans. They are not always realistic.”

I'll say.

It seems Carolina is a long way from Louisiana.

I'll say.

"North" Carolina is a long way from Lousiana...and in particular a few of
the major urban areas of North Carolina are fairly metropolitan and very
culturally mixed. I'm not saying Baton Rouge is backwards or not as
culturally diverse (but it is not the same)...but it is deep South and
college, the two are tradition multiplied exponentially. This is where
college and pro sports differ in some areas of the country. The identity of
a region is far more linked to their University in many cases. Thank you
for posting this...it is a good story. From what I've been told, Fox is a
hard guy to not like too. Can you imagein anybody in NJ getting upset about
Rutgers...the multitudes????? Oh how different this country is from State
to State.

X-No-Archive: Yes

Fox is a good guy so that is nice to see.

As for Louisiana being far away from NC. You can go from one parish
to another & it changes. Papa it is the south & all the good & bad
that goes with it.

Over half of my extended family by marriage is from the South...I don't
think "bad" I think different. In parts of NC now it is difficult to hear a
southern accent, areas that have changed by new people coming in seem, to
me, to be more receptive to the pro game and support pro teams....old
traditional areas tend to follow the college teams. I would suggest that
South Carolina is far different than North Carolina too in many areas. I do
not think of "The South" as one region, it changes quickly, and the coastal
areas are quite different than the piedmont and mountains. I actually think
it is great that people still identify with their State schools and support
sports that way. I wish some schools around here could get that kind of
support.

Miles's biggest sin is that he is not Saban. He lost two games by a
total of 15 points and one of those teams won the national
championship. Some of yo will enjoy this. He won over some detractors
because he sacked his OC.

I still don't agree with letting McDaniels walk. I thought he was
their best chance at getting production out of Tebow. What they
should have done is curtailed his responsibilities. Let him just
coach, bring in a real GM and front office. I doubt he would have
walked.

Fox got lucky getting out of Carolina, and the Panthers will regret
letting Fox go. I was rooting for Fox to get the Jet HC job, when
they signed Edwards.

I was rooting for Henning to get that job..and he was already there...so he
goes with Fox to Carolina and they go to a SB. Herm is running for office
in a specialty club...the other members are Eric Mangini, Rich Kotite and a
couple others. Herm is their leader though.

Please don't compare Mangini to Herm and Kotite.

Have a little human compassion, the guy recently lost his job. That's
just cruel. :-(

They will be very nice to him...Richie is a good Catholic boy...that's why
Leon hired him. :-) And Herm is the PREACHER. Actually, I think Mangini is
WAY better than either of them...he still should have a future in the
game..his mistake was taking two head coaching jobs before he was ready.

I also thought Mangini should have taken a DC job and gained more
experience before accepting another HC gig. I think he will eventually
be a good HC, he just needs to get more experience.

I haven't really done a lot of research on this or anything...but it seems
guys off of the Parcells tree seem to eventually find a way...do well....but
guys coming off of the BB tree struggle....anybody think there might be
something there?

Guys off the BB tree have been prematurely picked, it seems. But if
we count front office guys, two BB disciples are considered two of the
best GMs in football right now on their own (Pioli and Dmitroff).

Doesn't Pioli have some connection to Parcells? Why do I think that? I
could be way off, just something I thought...and I'd say he is one of the
better ones.
