Welker is a lot of things , a speed demon isn't one of them.
Right, but he had a big lead too. Nobody else could have closed on
him like that except for Revis. That was not even Revis' man and he
ran him down for good measure. It reminded me a bit of the Ben Watson
play in Denver.
I've always know Revis is one very-strong, tough hombre, but was anyone else
surprised of
his speed, when he ran down Welker?
I was really taken by surprise... and that's after watching him intently,
since he's been
here. People tend to overuse the *beast* thing, on athletes... I've never
used the word.
But in Revis' case, he overpowers most of his opponents, many of which are
much bigger
than him. So, seeing him run down Welker, just blew me away.

Still trying to figure out how McKnight got caught... and without even a
stiff arm try to go all the way? He looked gassed.

Ithink any CB would have run Welker down.
they pick those guys for speed.
Revis isn't great because he's extra fast, he's great because he can cover
like a blanket, lots of fast guys still suck.
I just watched a great replay angle (from up high) of that play on
NFL.com and here is my amended impression:
Both Revis and Smith bit on the play-action. Smith bit harder. If
you stop the action you can see his body leaning forward from motion
to stop the run, while Revis is looking for the run but not moving
yet. But they both bit for at least a split second.
Then Welker just runs right up the seam between them. He did not
favor one side or the other, but just went directly up the middle
between them. Revis immediately understood that Smith was not going
to recover and turned to chase Welker first.
Welker ran past Revis as Revis was still getting up to speed. If you
watch closely you'll see that Welker outran him for quite a distance
and then Revis found his afterburner. It took maybe 30-40 yards to
find it though.
If Revis had been on Welker in man coverage then it would have been
interesting because maybe he would not have bitten on play-action.
He's obviously a disciplined player and perhaps he only bit because he
had the safety help.
Sometimes if I record the game I will watch it a few times, fast forwarding
etc., and sometimes I'll pick one guy to really watch as well as TV coverage
allows which isn't really good. All that said...I think Revis is about the
best over-all player in the game today. You can't really compare one
position to another, but he is the most complete player. He is not only the
best cover corner, he is one of the flat out toughest and strongest ones too
and plays with serious heart. I really would like to see what he could do
with bump and run...AND I'd love to see him get to play with a top tier
safety helping him.

Smith ther Safety was responsible for the deep coverage and the mistake that
let Welker get free was all his.
Speed isn't as important in safeties and Welker can easily outrun one of
them.
Speed is essential in a Corner and most would have caught Welker, But Revis
is indeed fast and clearly he hustles.
Many a fast guy might not have bothered. When his contract is up he will be
in demand and it will cost some bucks for whomever lands him.
well I'll grant you he is the best player on the Jets and the best DB in
the league.
if he stays healthy the HoF awaits
Belichick dissected this play on his weekly segment...
He said he wasn't sure if Revis was handing him off to Smith or if he
was supposed to stay with him. Belichick takes you through it with
the same "up high" camera angle you talked about.
[Also, he goes through other plays from the game... pretty interesting
to hear a coach's take on individual plays, even if it is Patriots-
centric]
Nice get, Mark. Yeah, Belichick has the good eye for spotting things
like this but to me it just looks like there are some Pats players who
do things the way they're designed whereas the Jets just don't seen to
have that same commitment to the necessary disciplines. It's been like
this for years. Two or three plays, calls and execution per game that
alwys seem to go against us. And that call - pure Belichick. Here's a
HC who knows a thing or two about both sides of the ball. It's a
mindset that Rex needs to adopt. Leaving the Offense in Schitty's hands
will be his downfall in NY, but he'll be better off for it whenever he
moves on to his next stop.
How bad is Pool if Smith is playing?
