Laurence Maroney traded to Broncos
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on September 14, 2010 4:13 PM ET
Patriots fans don't have Laurence Maroney to kick around anymore.

The oft-criticized 2006 first-round pick is taking his talents to Denver,
where Bill Belichick's old buddy Josh McDaniels acquired Maroney on Tuesday,
according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. Compensation is unknown.

The Patriots could afford to lose him; Maroney had fallen behind Fred
Taylor,BenJarvus Green-Ellis, and Kevin Faulk on the depth chart. It's a
little surprising Denver wanted him.

Knowshon Moreno looked healthy in the opener, and Correll Buckhalter is a
suitable backup. Or was anyhow. Buckhalter fumbled on Sunday and only
gained 15 yards on six carries. The Broncos could use Maroney on kickoffs.

Maroney's career in New England started just fine. He averaged 4.4
yards-per-carry and led the team in rushing during the record-setting 2007
season. Injuries and passing down struggles stymied his growth from there.

UPDATE: Schefter reports the Patriots get Denver's fourth round pick next
year in exchange for Maroney and New England's sixth round pick.

so when Fred Taylor gets injured in a week or two, Sammy Morris,
Jarvis Green with the occasional sprinkle of Kevin Faulk will be
there. No loss for NE.

Just surprised he didn't go to Green Bay, who just lost Ryan Grant for
the season. Belicheat probably couold have gotten greater value from
the packers.

Another reason why it would be nice to still have Washington. If
Maroney & a 6th is worth a 4th then what is Washington worth?

Yup, like we were just saying the other day, the RB position has become
devalued in today's NFL. A 4th isn't bad at all when Washington goes
for a 4th, Jones signs a cheap contract, etc.

a 4th is good for a guy who wasn't dressed for the game.
he had clearly fallen to 4th on the depth chart.

Maroney looked like he'd been good when he came in, just shows how hit and
miss the draft is.

Aside from his first year, Maroney has gone from a good power runner to one
that hesitates at the line, tip-toeing around in the backfield looking for
the big hole. Can't be depended on to make the 3rd and 2 type of yards
anymore. Every once in a while he'll burst through the line like the old
Maroney but these times have been few and far in between. While Taylor and
Morris are good and could do the job, the problem is that neither one of
them can last too long without getting bitten by the injury bug.
Could be that with the new (tight end) receivers, the running game is taking
a big back seat. You'll probably see that philosophy in action next Sunday.
Get to/hurry Brady and it will be the Jets in a cake walk.

Mike Reiss made a good point today. Maroney had a few dominant games.
You can't get dominant games out of a "bust". Dude ran with authority
on many occasions, as recently as last season (and then the fumbles
came...). Maroney is definitely an enigma. He's probably a head case,
which might be why Belichick was shopping him.

MZ, I bet his shoulder is chronic. = DeRob's knee. I still think he is
good.

I thought he was a great pick & he played well in 2006 & 2007.

I can't argue with any of that. However. He MIGHT have gotten a bit more
had he actually played him a bit of late. Hope he broke off a good run here
or there to tempt suitors. He pretty neatly telegraphed his intentions
which lowered the guy's already sad value. I know...he then risked
injury...such is life. To only move up a couple of picks isn't a lot to
risk.

I've never heard of his being difficult.
mostly he seemed a good citizen.
yeah, he showed flashed, but he never sustained it.
this pre-season he was clearly the 4th HB,
4 HB are a lot to carry.

Law firm had a mediocre preseason. He may have beat Maroney out, but he
still sucks.

In his career, Green-Ellis is

105 attempts 411 yds 5tds

and *no fumbles*.

Maroney had 194 attempts in 15 games in 2009 so
if we scale up BJGE to that scale we have

759 yds 9 TD's rushing

About 70 yds less than Maroney rushing in 2007 and slightly more
than Maroney had in 2009.

If he got 287 attempts like Antowain Smith in 2001 (2.73):

1122 yds 14td's rushing

Which is almost identical to what Smith did in 2001.
And I think that's what Belichick would like for his
offense: a solid, workhorse back who can get the tough
short yardage, like Smith.

Law firm is the wimpiest back on the team not named Faulk. He goes down
when you look at him mean. Totally doesn't play up to his size. You
want workhorse, you put the ball in Morris' hands who will run over the
defensive players and then take a dump on their mother.

Belichick likes law firm because he plays special teams and occasional
FB (which he sucks at too). Mostly has to do with Belichick's weird
special teams fetish.

And the fact that Maroney had only one year left on his deal played a
big part. They got good value for him, considering. But he's still
better than law firm.
