So we lost:

Braylon Edwards
Jerricho Cotchery
Brad Smith

Our #2, #3, and #4 wideouts, and we got an aging Burress who is
already injured. How can it make sense to take so many targets away
from Mark Sanchez who we already know has no consistency? Who's our #3
wideout if Mason doesn't work out?

Add that to the losses of other Jets to retirement, the continued
aging of the rest of the Jets (including people like Tomlinson), and
how can we be better than last year? Aside from draft choices, who
have we acquired in free agency?

W H A T ! ..., "... if (Derrick) Mason doesn't work out?"

True that Rex isn't the brilliant HC that Jets fans have been making him out
to be after only one unquestionably hard earned playoff appearance. But
dude... Rex isn't the only one buzzin' big time if you have any doubts about
what Derrick Mason brings to the field each and every game of his career.
Not one of the ex-Ravens that Rex brought to JetsLife Stadium before him can
shine his shoes to this day. In fact Derrick Mason is the only ex-Raven that
Ravens fans would want to have back if that were at all possible.

Derrick is a pure possesion reciever that your own young QB will learn to
count on if he wants to play a while in this league, just as our own QB
(Flacco) has for the past three seasons in a row since his rookie arrival in
B'more. In that time Flacco has taken the Ravens to three consecutive
playoff appearances with much thanks going to Mr. Derrick Mason from his
fans in B'more for being a major contributor in that and in Flacco's
continued developement. So much so in fact that I would not be surprised to
see Flacco regress for a season while acclimating to an offense without his
guaranteed abilities. Brandon Stokely and Wes Welker are the only two clutch
possession receivers of his caliber and that can either match or exceed
Derrick's career accomplishments. I can't count Heinz Ward in that elite
group because Ben usually creates the time for Ward to get open. Mason
single handedly did that for Kyle Boller, Steve McNair and Joe Flacco. He'll
do it for Sanchez as well.

Now Derrick comes to the Jets whom he believes are his next best option as
the vessel toward attaining his SB ring. Without it Derrick will not become
an inductee into the NFL - Hall Of Fame. When he hangs 'em up Derrick
deserves to be there and I personally don't care with which team he can
accomplish that with now that he is no longer a Raven. So if that comes via
the NY Jets this season, ...next season, or the next then I'll be pulling
for the Jets even if they go up against my Ravens in a Divisional playoff
game. To that end I have no hesitation in saying... GO JETS !

The issue is not the number you lose but their talent level.

Braylon was a stud on the field. But apparently, he lacked the
necessities in the locker room. There were no stories as with Ellis
about losing him. Plus, I imagine that the Jets were not enamored with
the legal liabilities.

Cotchery was too steps too slow. Little separation. Huge drop off when
Braylon or Santonio were out. Two years with little production.

Brad Smith was a lousy WR who was only a threat at WR on end arounds.

While they guys they drafted and signed may or may not be better, the
issue is not losing these guys but whether Tanny and Rex improved
matters with their replacements (Plax, Mason and Kerley).

My main complaint about this off season is that I just wish we had
upgraded at Safety.

I like Mason a lot, but he seems to be a bit redundant in an offense
that already has Cotchery and a good pass-catching TE.

I was under the impression that the Jets had let Cotchery walk while in free
agency and that the Jets picked up Mason for the purpose of replacing
Cotchery ?

I agree that Mason would definitely be redundant if your statement is
correct.

Mason was responsible and successful in clearing out defenses for a good
pass-catching TE for the past seven years, his name was Todd Heap, a past
Pro Bowler so he was no slouch.

Yeah, they replaced him which is what I don't get.

Well, ...Heap is injury prone. He has spent far to much time off the field
in the past. His age is up there and so was his cap hit for this year. We
have the good fortune to have no less than 3 TE's which made the decision
easier, two of which are as capable as Heap at this time but more durable.

Good luck this season.
