(Wall Street Journal) - It's too much for Minnesota to visit the
New York Jets right now. Please call the Vikings and tell them to
pack their purple carry-ons and drive back to the airport. Asking
the NFL's two most preposterously overdiscussed franchises to meet
on the second Monday in October feels like a wedge of German
chocolate cake for breakfast. It's the Hyperbole Bowl. Barring a
tie, one of these controversy magnets is going to win, the other
will lose, and no matter which side you're on, you're never going
to hear the end of it.

The visitor here is Minnesota, which stumbles into the New
Meadowlands Sanitarium dragging an unsightly record of 1-2. Founded
in 1961, the Vikings are one of football's hardest-luck clubs,
having reached four Super Bowls and never won. In recent years,
they have refashioned themselves as a state-of-the-art assisted-
living home, offering seniors the chance to prolong their golden
years through rigorous exercise. Well, at least one senior: Brett
Favre, the craggy, perpetually retiring quarterback who turned 41
on Sunday amid his final (or so he says) Ahab voyage for a second
Vince Lombardi silver.

Mr. Favre is the beet-and-goat-cheese salad of sports: Despite how
many fans claim they're utterly sick of him, they never truly get
enough. He sells the jerseys, packs the house, thrills the
networks. He's the bodily manifestation of the Berra-ism, "Nobody
goes there anymore, it's too crowded." Mr. Favre is hopelessly
contradictory (he's staying, he's going), objectively fun to watch
(would you rather see Jimmy Clausen chuck it around?), and last
year he marched Minnesota within an interception of a Super Bowl,
which is why the Vikings once again shamed themselves and chartered
south to beg his services...
