There was this hillbilly farmer, let's call him Pappy Jones, who lived
on a piss poor dirt farm in the Ozarks with his 20 year old son Billy
Joe Bob. Pappy's missus had passed away from the fever a couple of years
back, so it was just him and Billy Joe Bob on the farm.
One Saturday night at the church social, Billy Joe Bob met 18 year old
Miss Sally Jean Smith, a right purty gal who lived on the other side of
the mountain with her momma, her daddy, and her 4 brothers, and Billy
Joe Bob and Sally Jean took a liking to one another and took to seeing
each other regular.
A few months later, Billy Joe Bob says to his Pappy, "Pappy, you know
that I been courtin' Miss Sally Jean Smith from the other side of the
mountain, and we done got it fixed in our heads to be marryin'."
"Well, Billy Joe Bob," says Pappy, "you're of marryin' age now, and we
could sure use a female around the farm what with the cookin' and
washin' and such, so what I'll do is, first thing in the mornin' I'll
hitch up our old mule Molly to the wagon and head on over to the other
side of the mountain to talk to Miss Sally Jean Smith's daddy and see
what he'll give us to take the girl off his hands."
So first thing next morning Pappy hitches old Molly up to the wagon and
sets off down the dusty road to the other side of the mountain.
All day long Billy Joe Bob is so nervous he can hardly pay attention to
his chores, and by evening he is sitting in the rocker on the front
porch just watching the road, when he sees a cloud of dust off in the
distance. Sure enough it's Molly and the wagon and Pappy, and pretty
soon Pappy's pulling into the yard and getting down from the wagon.
Billy Joe Bob goes running over and asks, "How'd it go Pappy? When's the
weddin' gonna be?"
Pappy looks at Billy Joe Bob and says, "Son, there ain't gonna be no
weddin', and you ain't gettin' married, leastwise not to Miss Mary Jean
Smith."
"But Pappy," cries Billy Joe Bob, "whatever happened?"
"Well," says Pappy. "Things were goin' along fine. Her daddy offered us
a dowry of 2 goats, 4 chickens, and a cow, which I thought was
favorable, and we were about to wrap things up, when I thought of one
last question."
"So I looked her daddy in the eye and I asked him straight up was Miss
Mary Jean still a virgin, and he tells me yes, that she was as pure as
the day she was born."
"That's when I got up, jumped in the wagon, and skedaddled on back home,
'cause I thought, Hell, if she ain't good enough for her family, then
she ain't good enough for ours!"
