Offense is up this season because passing is up -- passing yards are up about 10% over last year.

Passing is up because yards after the catch (YAC) is up -- the increase in YAC accounts for *more* than 100% of the increase in passing yards. Pass completion rate is basically the same as last year, and the length of the average pass attempt actually has been a little shorter than last year. But YAC is up a good 20% over last year.

"Yards after the catch" is up 20% over last year because [your theory here].

My theory is crappy tackling, get back to basics you defenses out
there. Sure, Jack Youngblood even said that. He observes. He
knows. The defenses are not paying much attention to the basic
skills.

I also think that the lockout had a bad effect on the defenses, but
don't ask me to back up that statement with an actual fact or two.

So once the defenses catch up the offenses should settle down, or so
goes that theory.
