and refuse to trade him, we will never see another player try this type
of blackmail with the Jets again. Revis will lose so much money, paying
fines for not honoring his contract during camp, playing at most only 6
games a year and losing three or four years of prime-time playing (the
lockout may cost players an entire year if it gets as nasty as I expect)
that he will never be the star he can be and will make much, much less
than the $21 million he is forgoing. It will be harder for him sit out
next season when the compensation would normally boost to $5 million and
even moreso the following year when it boosts to $15 million. IOW, I am
not sure he will employ the same strategy next season when it becomes
apparent that Gilbert and his agents blew it. And, since those monies
are now no longer guaranteed, they are not heinous at all.
Gilbert won his war by getting more money by sitting out than he got by
playing. We need to reward Brick and Mangold by showing Revis, all
agents, and every other player that we will not be blackmailed and that
sitting out a year with three years left on a deal is a losing move. If
he wants to risk injury by playing the last six games, let him. Injury
and long seasons will make his time a lot more valuable than what we
have to pay him less the fines.

The kids that make these statements must think that us working fools
are clueless.
If ANYONE knows what it means to take care of family, we do.
Taking care of family means we understand that you act responsibly,
and if you're under contract, you fulfill that contract.
It means that you don't accept unnecessary risk while seeking
extraordinary reward,
one in the hand, two in the bush.
It means you put your family's needs above your own personal needs.
And further, as a professional athlete playing a team sport, you
realize that your
teammates are family as well, and you have a moral commitment to them
just as they
do to you.
Based on his behavior to date, I truly hope he sits for the next 3
seasons, with no income.
If he returns at some point, I hope they only offer a minimum contract
& bury him on the practice squad.
If it seemed that Revis had been negotiating in good faith, I'm sure
I'd have a
different feeling about this, but setting a bar and refusing any offer
that fails
to satisfy the arbitrary threshold is not negotiating in good faith,
it is, simply,
a unilateral & uncompromising contract demand.
Revis' failure to engage in good faith negotiation does NOT provide
security
for his family, for when you consider the 20+ mil he's now forfeited
as a result
of his strategy, combined with the hard cost of fines accrued as well
as the very real
potential of no income until 2013, it is conceivable, if not likely,
that his family's
standard of living will, necessarily, decrease over that time-frame.
I believe that Revis' best play, at this point, is to sue his agents
and his uncle for
damages directly resulting from ineffective counsel.
In the final analysis, it is unfortunate that he chose these
individuals to manage
his best interests, but he had the ability to see the landscape. It
wasn't long ago
that we all saw,( including Darelle) A-Rod go through this identical
situation.
A-Rod managed it effectively.
Now that Darelle has played his hand,
I'm sure there is no lonelier place on the planet than on Revis
Island.

years of the current deal and now will get $32 million guaranteed over
