alt.blahblah.ny.jets has been a ghost town this year. You are not alone.
Sparano has made me wish we still had Schotty but today cemented the status
that Sparano was an improvemenmt. Barely, but an improvement.

Give Rex a pass, jettison Tanny or send him upstairs to crunch numbers, get
a real O coordinator. Send T-bone on his way, and see if you can salvage
Sanchez... He's not the answer but he sure as hell is better that T-bone.
With a new GM, focus 100% on building an O-Line that can protect the QB and
give him more than 2 seconds to throw. If that doesn't work next year,
start over again.

That really only happened in year 1 & 3. Did they even score during
Clemens, ex-Cowboy cokehead year?

It might be although he has a RB, no OL, thin at reciver & possibly like
in NY no QB.

Sentiments reciprocated. Was just wondering the other day where you
vanished to. Thought maybe you were off searching for inner peace in Sri
Lanka or some other mysterious venue. Sounds like you might have found
some somewhere, but you had to set foot in the quagmire again, didn't
you? As Michael Corleone said, "Just when I thought I was out, they pull
me back in."

Been very busy, & kinda lost interest in the team for the first time since I
was a pup.
Hiring Sparano, then bringing in Tebow, just pushed me over the cliff.

But I had some time today, & watched the beginning of the game.
Saw ol' Schott, & after the nausea passed... watched the Rams score on their
first drive.
Hmmmm, seen this before... great first drive, then ?
Could Schott have brought the first drive then nothing, with him to St
Louis??

So, after doing a few things, back to the game... yup, Schott still has
*it!*
Poor Sam Bradford. Had a promising career. Figure by next year, he'll be
showing some
signs of regression... then, well, we've seen what's happened to Sanchez,
since his
promising beginning.

Really is weird not being pulled by the Jets. Not really caring if they
win.
But, I think it's temporary, although Woody selling the team would sure
help.
Probably time for Tanny to be ejected. Building a team of JAGs, with a few
quality draft
picks, has run its course.

Anyway, hope everyone's doing well, & yer families, friends, finances, &
furry friends are
all healthy, & fruitful!!!

*******************************
Good to hear from you. We did that annual event yesterday...the one you
came to a couple years ago. Lisa says "Hi"...she was
awesome as ever. I only got to see bits and pieces of the game when it was
on in the bar in the other end of the venue. We did
raise a whole bunch of money. It was really the best one so far.

I'm kind of with you...I can not get interested / invested in following this
team anymore....Woody selling would help a lot I think.
With this win and another couple they will "stay the course", and it will go
on, and on, and on, and on :-) Thank God there is music and
blondes.

Since Woody appears to be brain dead (how many years did it take him to
move Schitty out?) I suspect that the people who are in place now will
also be in place next year, ergo, expect more of the same.

Remember the old adage that it's better to replace a player one year too
early than one year too late? Not on this team. Rex and Tranny should
be replaced NOW, but won't be until after at least one more year of this
mediocrity.

I would love to sit in on their meetings. Assuming even my mild defense
of Schott was off, Michael pop a Xanax, then how did Rex take him & then
extend? Rex's ego thinking he could out do it? I know papa's answer but
I think Woody is too stupid to suck up. I think it really is they hate
eating salary.

Yes on Tannebaum stick w/ Rex.

Good OC's DC's are rare. HC even rarer. I can buy that some guys never
can get past one level but an OK coach who is great on defense is better
than an OK who can't coach either side. Rex & Pettine better hope that
Michael is right about Sparano. If he isn't sack him this year or he or
maybe Pettine becomes the next sacrificial lamb.

I agree with FTG being in the running, but George Henry Thomas ??? Interesting choice... I'd think of him as an underappreciated General, but not in the running for "greatest of all time". He was slick at Missionary Ridge, but his later battles saw him up against a disadvantaged enemy. Especially when he wiped out "Old Wooden Head" in the Franklin-Nashville campaign. I compare him to Montgomery. More interested in "not losing" rather than looking for opportunities to win by being quick on his feet, instinctive and opportunistic. I don't think Thomas would have been able to handle an army successfully if it was at a numerical disadvantage or caught off guard.

I still say... There was *Napoleon* and then there were the rest of them.

Also excellent choice... Cannae alone gets him major props. I'd agree with Hannibal because of the number of battles he fought and won while out numbered and "far from base". Also had a mind of his own. Very creative.

I still put Napoleon ahead of Hannibal. First off, Napoleon fought and won more capitol battles than Alexander, Hannibal and Fredric The Great combined. The Napoleonic ere battlefield was also the most complex battlefield that a "general" commanded on site. There were melee infantry (bayonets), projectile infantry (powder and shot), horse cavalry and gunpowder artillery. Prior to that era, gunpowder infantry and artillery was a fashion statement. In the classical era (Hannibal-Scipio) there was no gunpowder element. After the Napoleonic era (WWI-WWII), the days of a general being on site to command an army vs. another general mano-a-mano were gone. Generalship spilt into two branches. The operational general such as von Manstein and the battlefield general such as Patton. Napoleon was also able to adapt, think outside the box and was in the eyes of the pundits, one of the most inspirational generals of all time. He gets a black eye for Russian, but he reached his military objective and took Moscow. That campaign was a political misjudgment and not a battlefield loss.

This thread tangent is about bona fied generals. Not corporals with personality disorders. Though if you want to dwedge up the krauts, you can cout von Manstein in the running for the best "opperational general" of the industrial era and Rommel and Guderian in the running for the best battlefield general of the industrial era.

Steely Dan ?!?!?!

OMFG !!!

Steely Dan is for pencil necks that have themselves fooled into believing that they are urbane, refined and intellectually sophisticated. When Steely Dan fans grow into middle age, they are the geeks that pay a $100.00+ cover and $35.00 a drink at a place that has a four drink minimum to listen to crappy high jazz that they don't really like... All in the name of cultivating an image.

There is nothing more to a Steely Dan song than there is to an AC/DC song. It is all in the packaging. Remember... You can sell a small stone the type you find in your back yard for $20.00. All you have to do is put it in a little box with some straw and print "Pet Rock" on the box.

generation

grandparents.
That is sort of what this one is about. I really think one of the reasons
I'm alive

people so much, it does give you a better outlook on life. Some of my peers

Keep telling that to yourself when ever you feel your self appointed authority over any and every subject to be in challenge. As long as it makes you feel better.

>ask the officers in Viet Nam who got hammered by advocates of this philosophy.

What philosophy am I advocating, exactly ??? If you want to protest against my commentary, can you do so with academic points or counter points rather than write me off with a devaluing barb ???

Explain in detail what military merit Shaka displayed that would put him in the discussion for greatest general of all time ??? Since you also refer to the effort of the North Vietnamese, you can also explain to me what great military merit they displayed. Is it Giap that you are counting in the discussion ??? Even you must know that the Tet Offensive was a battlefield disaster for the Communist north as was most every other one of their battlefield efforts. Like Shaka, they were politically savvy, but they could not have won on the battlefield against their contemporary foes.

I once wrote a poem about that moment. Me, inside a main street shop
window on looking out, beautiful young something outside looking in. We
smile at each other my heart leaps she comes into the store and,
beaming, walks right past me into the arms of a much younger man and I
know that my time has passed.

Sorry, booby... Where Steeley Dan is concerned, you are yet another fool consumer in a rush to buy your pet rock. Besides listening to a musical artist that has been able to confuse a poor player like you into thinking it is somthing other than yet another rock/pop act with a twist, what experience with or knowledge of music do you have ???

You might not identify with audience that artists like AC/DC and Def Leopard are written and marketed to, but musically speaking, the are no less complex than Steely Dan in any respect. If you consider albums like Mutt Lang's Back In Black and Hysteria, they more than rival the production quality of anything that Steely Dan have done.

What do you think Steely Dan is, Richard Wagner's Ring Cycle ???

You are yet one more poor pencil neck that has been sold a bill of musical goods by Steeley Dan. So long as you feel sophisticated when you listen to your Steely Dan albums, I suppose your money was well spent. The same goes for any AC/DC fan that buys the music and packaging that comes along with their wares.

You must use your larger brain when you read your "Michael".

I don't listen to the classic rock stations too often, but if I have one on and Steely Dan is played, I NEVER change the station. I like it. It is slick, and as you would expect from a Fagen product, it's got that "hook". Like Zappa, they also recorded a lot of their work with some of the best session players on the market. As is also advertised ad nauseum, Fagen and Becker know their way around the studio. With commercial rock/pop music, turning the knobs is 95 % of the craft.

I also mentioned AC/DC. Without the use of your larger brain, a knee jerk reaction would be to think that AC/DC and Steely Dan don't belong in the same sentence.

NOT TRUE.

Only the packaging is different.

Both are masters of mid tempo pop/rock. Steely Dan is flavored with high minded jazz. I actually consider Steely Dan to be a "gateway" band. Many 'o twit that got hooked on Steely Dan found their way to the wonderful world of jazz. AC/DC on the other hand is blues bases pop/rock. Also a "gateway" band, but to the warm humanity of blues.

As far as talent and taste go in the rock/pop category, you wont find better than Fagen. He is one crafty dude. The same is for sure with the Young brothers. Few if any have come up with as many catchy and listenable riffs as Malcolm Young and few rock/pop lead guitarists have played as many masterful and tasteful rock/pop solos as Angus Young. IMHO, as far as pure feel and taste go, only David Gilmour can out-do Angus Young.

In the studio, the Youngs are every bit as experienced and capable as Fagen and Becker. The Young family includes George Young of Vanda and Young fame. For the uneducated among us, they descend from the Easybeats and became very well known as top producers.

The only difference between Steely Dan and AC/DC is the packaging. One is aimed at pencil necks that fancy themselves as socially refined and intellectual. They sip wine, watch "films", and impress each other at jazz clubs with four syllable words. The other is aimed at dudes that are louts and proud of it. The drink whisky and piss on walls. In place of four syllable words, they use four letter words to get their point across. The dont see "films" they see "flicks". They wear denim vests with the sleeves cut off. and they see through the bull shit.

Other than that, there is very little difference between The Dan and DC.

Like I said... What do you Dan fans think you are listening to, Wagner's Ring Cycle ???

BWT...

Happy Thanksgiving and God Bless.

Some music needs to be considered in the context of the time it was created.
Some will go beyond that and have a more lasting value becoming timeless.
"For What It's Worth" fits the latter I think. But there are some tunes
that those who came later will never relate to, can't understand that did
have a perfect place in the context of the time they were created. Then,
there are some unique people who seem to be able to take a song and the
performers at face value and not over analyze and actually get it. Steely
Dan was important because at a time when popular music was going against
what had happened in the 60's their music embraced ALL forms and used the
jazz and funk infusion along with other pop music to build on. Frankly, I
don't see where Michael gets his Pet Rock comparison at all. It was 70's
music for growing older hippies who were rejecting disco crap. Do I listen
to it....rarely if ever, but it certainly has it's place and I actually do
go to see a couple of bands who follow that jazz, funk, R&B tradition and
like it a lot. It's nothing like what I play, but I like lots of different
stuff.

Papa...

Consider what you just wrote.

"It was 70's music for growing older hippies who were rejecting disco crap"

and then you wrote:

"Frankly, I don't see where Michael gets his Pet Rock comparison at all."

If you could, read my post just above for additional clarification.

One more thing that I'm sure you, Johnny or myself might not be to happy to hear.

Some of the more well known Steely Dan and AC/DC songs will still be on the play list LONG after the last of the tree of bite the dust. The songs are timeless.

The larger point of my commentary that was kicked off with a little inflammatory bait was that there is little more to Steely Dan, an artist that is considered to be "intellectual" musically speaking than there is to AC/DC, an artist that is considered to be anything but an intellectual study.

It would be fair to ask why I decided to pull this out of my ass to begin with. When ever I hear "Steely Dan", I'm compelled to remind the world that it isn't Beethoven's 9th or Wagner's Ring Cycle. I've been around a lot of players. Too many of them jack-off over artists that come in a fancy package.

The war could have been over in 1940. The French had a quantitative and qualitative advantage in both men and material when the Germans invaded Poland on Septermber 1st, 1939. If the French general staff took their hands of their peckers, they could have advanced to Berlin as fast as the foot infantry could march. That would have been the end of that.

WWII would not even have started if Clemenceau took his head out of his ass and listened to the sentiments and sensibilities of Wilson, Lloyd George and Keynes. Remember the quote: "Treat them like the enemy and they won't disappoint."

I dare say they did not disapoint... 50 million dead.

If you are not all that fond of Patton, check out Mark Clark and how he ran the whole of the Italian campaign. How about his subordinate, Lucas at Anzio ??? Talk about a dick in ice water.

They didn't have a quantitative advantage because their generals weren't
good & didn't know to use the tanks they had that were better. Their
soldiers were never as good as the Germans. A motorized armored division
was new to them.

Wilson?? Wilson should have kept us out of the war. It would have ended
in a stalemate & maybe no WWII.

Lloyd George played to the British public & the destruction of Germany
was more important than a sustainable Germany.

Wilson had other fish to fry, and in order to fry them he had to get a
seat at the table at the cost of having skin in the game. Ergo, we
enter the war, and the rest, as they say, is history.

You mean to say that the French did not have a qualitative advantage in *tactics* ??? The French had more men and mechanized gear than the Germans had. The French tanks were also better than the ones the Germans had in 1939. As far as the poor use of what they had... If the French general staff had opted to attack Germany after the Germans invaded Poland, they would have been able to cause major issues for the Germans. So much so, that the Germans would not have been able to undertake their invasion of France. Guderion wasn't the only field General that knew how to use tanks. French field commanders also had the idea of using tanks as an "armored fist". At the time the single advantage that the Germans had in the use of armor, tactically speaking was command and control. They had transceivers in all of their tanks and the French did not. Again... The French blunder was inaction on the part of the general staff. They knew how to use tanks too.

Wilson was of the mind that Germany should be allowed to regain economic health. So did Lloyd George. Both of those dopes were swayed by public opining and Clemenceau as well. Since France payed the butcher's bill, Wilson and Lloyd George went along with his policy of reducing post war Germany to a state of sustained econimica deperation. It was the German economical condition that produced actions to the politial expression of the Nazis. If not for those circumstances, Hitler would have been nothing but a crank on the street corner.

Don't forget Dieppe... The Brits were smart to send the Canadians on that one.
It also makes me consider that the Battle Of Brittan was not all that big a deal. If the Germans managed to get air supremacy, all it means is that their attempted channel crossing would have been a total disaster. They were going to try to cross the channel with converted barges. Neither side had any idea of the logistics it would take to pull of a cross channel invasion.

He did good work in North Africa, Sicily and during operation Cobra. He only blew it big time once. Even Grant screwed up at Cold Harbor and Lee lost it for all the marbles at Gettysburg.

That was Mussolini's reasoning for siding with the Germans during WW II. Although he did not care for Hitler and his politics, Il Duce' wanted a chip in the game and was sure the Germans were going to win.

Johnny what fish?

He talked about self-determination that he denied the Irish...also the Balkans, arabs, Armenians, Kurds, etc.

The US was the sole super power as everyone was in debt to us. He was an Anglophile of the worst kind. He had power.

IMHP he blew it when it mattered.

North Africa was over in fact Rommel at the height of his power never
even had an army but a Corps & no air cover. The entire Montgomery
success was a PR piece.

We had some stupid generals. Did you ever see the numerical superiority
we had at Normandy? Ike still almost blew it.

Yes, but he accomplished too much two write him out of the discussion. El Guettar, Sicily, Cobra and the reliefe of Bastonge is a heafty resume' despite a speed bump on the road.

>We had some stupid generals. Did you ever see the numerical superiority we had at Normandy? Ike still almost blew it.

Yeah, they were an inch away from shutting down Omaha. The German general staff made every mistake they could make during the first crucial hours of the invasion and the Allies still struggled. If Hitler let Rommel have sole command over the defense of France, the invasion would have probably failed given the horrendous decisions that Ike made. Rommel wanted to repel the invasion before they could establish a beach head. von Rundstedt wanted to fight a reactionary defense of the allied forces once their objectives became clear to the Germans. Hitler decided to go with a "compromise" defense plan. Hard to believe the Germans held lavishly equipped and trained units from moving to the beach areas until it was too late. Harder still to believe that the allies almost blew it despite having all the advantages. I have a great book on what the Germans were up to as far as their defense plan for France and what happened during the first 48 hours of the invasion. It is called "Hitler Slept Late". Lots of great info.
