I don't understand this part. We have to go 12-4 just to get a playoff berth

That's to *guarantee* a playoff spot. The Jets could go, say, 10-6
and still make the playoffs, but then they need other teams to lose.
If they go 12-4 it does not matter what other teams do.

if we win 5, and the raiders win out, the raiders have homefield
advantage. we'd get a bye, though.

12-4 for a playoff berth? more like three.

why, when this team is behind us in the standings by virtue of a
tie-breaker, would they need one less win than us to guarantee a
playoff berth?

and then the pats can get in at 7-9?

7-9 gets the colts in, too? is this why the jets miss the playoffs
every year? because we need more wins than everybody else? maybe i
need to pay closer attention......
