Johnny, Watch all the lost souls jump on the band wagon now, after flaming
those of us who saw what Schott is long ago.....he simply does not prepare
the offense, it looks totally disjointed and execution looks sloppy at best.

You know. Carl that you'll get no argument from me on Schott. However,
I must say that his offense is woefully bogged down by mediocrity in the
personnel department. I'll take three players off this team (four if
you count an injured Leon): Cotch, Dustin and Nick. The rest are
largely second stringers on any other team (well, maybe not the Browns).
But do the math...an ejit OC and a team of wannabe players. Add a
demonstrably lost HC, a GM that has proven to be an empty suit and an
owner who...well it's late and you know how I feel about all of the
above. I'm sure that I can find better things to do on autumn Sundays.

Hiya, Johnny... I think you might be undervaluing the Jets offensive
talent. The yardage they get on the ground can be attributed to an
excellent RB and an excellent offensive line. I dont think they are a
good "smash mouth" line, but they are excellent at working together.
Mangold and Faneca are both pro bowlers, Woody is an excellent run and
pass blocker and Brick's pass blocking right now is excellent and he's
even showing that he can run block as of late. They have a great slot
receiver in Keller and you cant argue with the potential of Cotch and
Edwards. They way I see it, the Jets have one of the more talented
offenses in the league as far as their individual manpower goes.
Consider this... Keller, Cotch and Edwards... And look at the passing
game Schott has been running. If a guy like Henning had the offensive
line, running back and receivers that the Jets have, there would be
production and scoring and LOTS less interceptions. Yes... I think a
lot of the interceptions can be blamed on the play calling, play
design and qb coaching... or lack of qb coaching. The receivers that
the Jets have should be blowing the roof off the house every game
considering they can run too.

What has Edwards done on the Jets? That's not to say he can't fulfill
his potential, but he's clearly not there yet. Maybe it's not his
fault, but I don't think you can heap praise on him until he actually
produces. And I'll say the same about Clowney and all his speed.
I like Cotchery a lot, but his problem has always been that he's one of
the best #2 receivers in the league.
The OL is the new Schott debate. Half the newsgroup seems to be torn,
and it tends to be the extreme positions. You're declaring them
"great", while Johnny says they suck. I'm going to take the middle road
and say they have a bunch of talented linemen who AREN'T physically
dominating, which I think describes why there's so many different
opinions about them. What I mean by that is they have athletic guys
(left side) and technique guys, but not really any road-graders. I know
you think Moore is that, but I think there's a reason 31 other teams
passed on him. It's a decent line, but until they develop a nasty
streak I can't call them "great". They're not like the Chargers line a
few years back, or the Jags line a couple years ago.
Also, as I've been saying back to the preseason, they lack the 11th guy.
That means #3 WR, #2 TE, etc. Every guy on the field counts. So, no
matter what offense they bring out on the field, whether it's a tight
set, a spread formation, whatever, they have one guy out there who isn't
very good. Yeah, I guess Richardson is ok, but he's a frickin' FB. The
FB position is dead in the NFL, unless you're a crazy talent (think Dan
Kreider or Lorenzo Neal from a few years back, or Mike Alstott or Larry
Centers in a different way). When we were talking about defenses, we
got so bent out of shape over the 11th guy sucking (think Bowens last
year...). But no one's talking about it on offense. The Jets
desperately need to draft a 2nd TE this year or deepen their WR corps to
run more 3 WR sets before we can start saying they have the offensive
talent.

Just one question here, Mark: aside from Nick, which of the four
remaining O-linemen would you swap for one of your Pats? Or do you
think that a line that's not physically dominating equates to a
championship caliber offense? OK, two questions.

I don't think the Steelers have the dominating line they once had, and
they won a championship with it. So I think there are exceptions.

First off you have no idea how good an OC he is because he has always
had issues with talent. Schott haters can't deal with reality.
Oftentimes situations dictate what happens. Schott's problem has been
talent. This year he has slightly more talent & depth except at WR & TE.
He has an inexperienced QB which is his 4th QB in 4 years. To make
matters worse at WR Smith ho is a. an excellent blocker & b. an
important part of moving the defense has missed a good chunk of the
season. Clowney probably won't be in the NFL in two years.
Our OL sucks on the right side. I think we are average - good on the
left but Faneca is never going to move anyone in short yardage
situations which makes it easier to defend in short yardage situations.
I bet is Schott is hired or fired after this year. Be careful what you
wish for I have seen firsthand how a new OC & OL coach can try & put in
their "system." Hey, Kubiak will probably be available.

That can be overcome by smart game planning, play calling and
adjustments, none of which have we seen with Schott. And you didn't
answer my first question.

I probably wouldn't take Faneca over Mankins, DBrick over Light, or
Moore over Neal. I'd consider Woody over Kaczur. But if Vollmer will
be taking Kaczur's spot, that makes the decision easier. So, no, I
wouldn't swap any of those 4.

Now here's another one for ya: DO you really think that the PAt's five
comprise what you would call a "dominating" line? My answer would be
that although they are a cut above the Jets' line, that no, they aren't
dominating.
The Jets' coaches simply do not appear to get the best out of what they
have, even if what they have is really only marginally better than the
'06 crew. Which is why I've soured on Callahan as the OC; he's no great
shakes as the O-line coach and doesn't seem to have much of a positive
impact as the Assistant Head Coach either.
But now listening to the arguments back and forth here, I'm starting to
lean towards benching the kid, perhaps for a couple or three games.
Maybe start O'Connel?
