Sorry Glenn I don't know of one. I tend to use Google Groups while I'm
at work and the demon news server when at home and Google Groups is
almost unreadable now. As demon (my ISP) have gone from bad to worse
to downright shite, I'm thinking of ditching them and going with
another ISP and using the news.individual.net server. It's 10 Euros/
year (14 dollars) so hardly going to break the bank.

Thanks.
I had tried this before but could not get it to work. Seems like the
new version is better.
Question:
There are two links, Kill Thread and Ignore User.
I have been using the kill thread link and it has cleaned up the pages
nicely. Will this prevent future posts from that poster/bot, or should
I be clicking ignore user to do that.
Never mind, ignore user is the way to go.
Ian, download the files Marcman has linked to. It works great. You can
kill threads individually or block users. This is the best spam filter
I have used.
I know of a couple options. For IE or Firefox, you can use
trollkiller:
http://www.source9.com/trollkiller.html
The caveat is that with Firefox 3.5 or later, it doesn't work. (I
keep a separate install of FF just for this extension.) Download it
and then drag it into an open window of the browser to install.
For FF you can also install the Greasemonkey add-on, and then the
Google Groups killfile script. You need both for this to work.
Greasemonkey allows you to install site-specific scripts.
Greasemonkey: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/748
Script: http://www.penney.org/googleGroups.user.js
Just installed it.
It works well but in heavy spam areas you only see one or two threads.
It would be nice if it could instead of hiding the thread so you don't
see it, it just did not load it at all.
If you are talking about Trollkiller, you can set it to show no
message when a thread is hidden. Greasemonkey, I can't remember, it's
been awhile since I used it. You can toggle both on and off to make
sure it isn't hiding something that matters.

Actually, 'regular expressions' are the way to go. If you click on
the "killfile" link at the top right of the Google Groups web page,
you can see/edit your killfile in a popup. Start by adding a topic;
click "New Topic" and replace "edit me" with the word you want to
filter by, for example "wholesale." Then hit "X" (on the killfile
popup not the Google Group page) to turn it into a regular expression
(or regex). For example, to get rid of both 'wholesale' and
'Wholesale' you would need an expression like [wW]holesale.
If you want, use my filters, copy:

To use this filter, or edit your own, type "about:config" into the
address bar, and then type "grease" into the filter box, and look
for:
"greasemonkey.scriptvals.www.penney.org/Google Groups
Killfile.GoogleKillFile";
Double click on the 'value' beginning with "-----%FF" and copy my
filter string (above) into the box in its entirety; or append it to
the end of your own filters by copying from the first instance of
"Topic" (immediately following "FF") to the end ("bonus").
The filter above should get rid of 99% of the current junk, and much
of what will come in the future too. (Ping me if it isn't working for
you, or here: http://groups.google.com/group/asfpnep-2)
Minor correction: if you want to append it to the end of your own,
copy from "%FFTopic" to "bonus".
Beiselbub, I love you and want to have your children.

You're welcome. If I had any, I would gladly give them to you.
(I'll post updates for the spam.)
