I'd rather have Ryan than Cowher. Ryan's a young'n. Ryan's staff is
mostly unproven (at least his coordinators...). I'm pretty sure I could
have coached a championship team if LeBeau was my defensive coordinator
and Ken Whisenhunt my OC. The Steelers organization is probably the
best in the NFL, maybe in all of pro sports. Basically...he had it
made. I predict a major flop wherever he goes next. IMO, Shanahan is
the best of the available coaches.
Anyway, I don't think you fire a coach who has improved the defensive
unit so dramatically and is relying on a rookie QB on the other side of
the ball. They might consider a change in QB coach (who's doing it
now??) if Sanchez continues to struggle. But who knows how much of it
is Sanchez and how much is the coach? I'm usually the last guy to say
W-L record doesn't matter, but I think in this case we've seen marked
improvement in a number of areas that leads me to believe that Ryan is
not an empty suit like his predecessor.

I don't think it is fair to pin a season even if it turns out as bad
as you are predicting here on Rex when we have a rookie QB.

I think you could ask another question. If Sanchez continues to score
points for the other team, do you look for another option for next
season in case he does not improve ??? Rex has done an excellent job
and if not for the QB issues, the Jets would have at least 2 more
wins, probably 3 more. So... If this season was flushed because of a
rookie QB, would you not say that it was a MUST to shop for a vet fa
qb that can come in and run the game just in case ? I think that is
what has to be looked at.
Also... Hear me now and believe me later. Spittle face Cowher is not
half the coach he is made out to be. I would rather have Herm and I
would absolutely take Ryan over Cowher. I also think that Shanahan is
the best of the ones out there. He is not my favorite guy, but he
appears to be more resourcefull than the other high profile guys on
the market. Holmgren, I think is spent and will plod along to a split
season where ever he goes. I also think "Chucky" will be coaching
again. He is talking that he wants to stay in the booth only for
leverage, I think. If Buffalo gets one of those guys, I hope it is
Cowher for the Jet's sake.

Nice question, g, and one that I think the media will begin to hammer on
in the coming weeks. As I see it, there is only one of the remaining
games that, from here, looks like a pretty sure win: Tampa (and that one
is starting to be questionable if Freeman actually steps up). So, 5-11
is still in the race. That's gonna have plenty of people howling and
bring your question front and center come December.
If it were up to me, I'd keep Ryan, tell him to shut his fucking mouth
and hire Holmgren or Dungy as head of football operations/GM (finally
getting rid of my favorite whipping boy). I'd then ask whoever that
replacement GM is to find an OC with plenty of experience in designing a
PASS FIRST offense (enough of the smash mouth/ground and pound game
plans which lead the league in rushing and are so inept at winning
games) and then I'd spend ALL of my free agency money, AND draft picks,
on both of the lines and safety. Finally, if Ainge doesn't show up and
replace Clemens as the back-up QB, then, and only then (to anticipate
Michael's call) I'd wait until the last week of camp and bring in a free
agent to have as a stand-by.
IOW, I've gotta give Rex at least another year. After all, look at
Landry, Walsh and Parcells as examples of guys who stunk up the joint in
their first years and who, I'd guess you'd have to say, went on to have
better ones subsequently.

Next year, if they perform worse than the Jills and Fish (again) then it
could be a different story). And, if they perform worse than both and
Sanchez resembles VG even more, than it is almost certain they are

I have stated repeatedly that I don't think this is a talent problem.
There is a losing culture here. Unless Rex deals with it, all his
machinations won't mean diddly.
I know Tanny's decisions are suspect by many. Most question his failure
to address the DE position (starters or bench), his cavalier (mis)use of
draft picks, and horrific choices like Schlegel, VG, signing Faneca past
his prime, etc.
OTOH, we have a fairly good set of DBs, a decent, albeit thin, OL, some
very good inside LB and one OLB, barely adequate OLB and inside depth,
good runners and decent WR.
There are a lot of teams that would trade the Jets for talent even up.

much more could you ask for than having those two guys as coordinators?
Matt Cavanaugh is listed as the QB coach, but I believe from what I have
heard it is really more in the hands of Schottenheimer, who was QB coach in
San Diego. I think Mark nailed it....the assistants are not proven guys for
the most part. I still have big concerns about Rex and his ability to
handle the head job...it's clear he has a good football background, but he
really looks frazzeled and I just don't want more of that Kotite / Mangini
dazed and confused stuff.

When the DC of the Jets decides to step up and become the HC I will
give further consideration. At the very least the OC will need to be
replaced and either Callahan becomes the OC or maybe even the HC if
Ryan is a no show; Callahan atleast took a team to a SB.
