I am glad I missed it-- was driving-- but still like where we are headed.
John, I admire your persistence.
I don't like where we are going. I think we are not fixing the right
thing.
Too many fans seem to be looking at each game as a separate event. The
one common element is that, once again, this team does not know how to
win. Herm and Eric have undone all the good Parcells wrought here. There
is a guy who gets it. Most folks look at '98 as the big year. The next
year, when he earned a .500 record with f-ing Ray Lucas as Qb showed me
he can make chicken salad out of chicken sh_t.
Miami with less talent and more excuses has won more games than it
should, including two wins against us, because that Parcells team finds
ways to win.
Whether our offense collapses, a guy drops a pass or the ball, a guy
forgets to contain on a KR, a safety tries to change the formation too
late, the coaching staff doesn't have the right game plan to stop
another team's weird offense, a CB relaxes on a blitz and gets burned,
the common element is that this team, again, loses games it should win.
I am old school. My style would be to cut a Danny W for losing a game by
making the same mistake twice. Guys should ride the bench for screwing
up or worse. IMHO, players need to get that they cannot have a job on
this team if they don't make the big plays or worse, make the gaffes
that wrest defeat from the jaws of victory.
I see nothing in Rex' bluster to indicate that he gets the problem here.
When dumb coaches state we need more consistency they fail to see
our/their team is consistent -- we consistently find ways to lose games
or make what should be easy wins close.
Maybe the samurai sword mentality I prefer (cause me to lose MF and you
will lose your job) will not fix what ails this team. However, it is not
about Xs & Os, it is not about Shott's play calling, Rex making players
inactive to create a defensive scheme that works, a rookie Qbs learning
curve, etc.
The disease is not knowing how to win while knowing all to well how to
do the opposite.
Until Rex addresses the real problem, it cannot be fixed. I don't get he
even sees the problem here.
harlan
Harlan, like I said I didn't watch the game.
Here is what I like:
1. Our defensive coaching in term of preparation has improved. See what
Vilma is dong in NO if you don't believe me.
2. I like 3/4 LBers, 3/4 secondary (maybe all)
3. The offense is there physically with the players.
What I worry about:
1. Ryan has at times been a distraction. Whether the media has taken
stuff out of context like taking a joke & making it sound like he is
serious, nonetheless he has to realize when he talks they will always do
that. That has to improve & it might have been to pull attentions, some
of it, off the rookie.
2. DL is way too thin.
3. Can we keep Edwards?
4. My complaint with the Offense is more about discipline & preparation
than play calling.
We have had some bad luck with Cotchery & Jenkins going down. We never
should have entered the season that thin at DL & WR and that is a result
of wasting picks. Some of you guys hated Bradway but his big picks at
least could play in the NFL and he didn't constantly trade mid rounders
away.
I taped it. When they lost, I wiped it out. I am not watching any more
games this year that they do not dominate.

I completely agree. There is a reason our defense is so highly ranked
statistically, even without Jenkins and Shephard, and the games have
been so close.
> 2. I like 3/4 LBers, 3/4 secondary (maybe all)
Me too.

Agreed.
Even the OL is not much worse than the others.

I completely disagree. He is who he is. The media in the NYC greater
area are inept and have no concept of journalism. They are purveyors of
angst and filth and self inflated self opinions.
No matter how Rex comports himself if he wins he is great and if he
loses he is too rigid, too out of touch, too boisterous, too
conservative, too reckless, too Xs and Os, too rah rah, etc.
> 2. DL is way too thin.
Amazing what they have done with what I thought was nothing.
Agreed. Maybe our lousy record will allow us to improve this. We need
two DE (or a DE and NT), an OG and OT. One or two years could fix this
through the draft.
> 3. Can we keep Edwards?
We probably do need droppsie.

I think it is too play not to lose but...

BS. The only tough injury was Jenkins. This is the NFL and teams get
injuries.
>We never

I disagree again. There was no difference making WR that changed hands
who will help beyond this year and most that changed teams like TO were
expensive trash. Same with DL.
I think the draft made sense as did the off season. Rome was not built
in day.

OTOH, if Rex does not fix what really ails this team, none of the
personnel moves will make a difference. The NY Jets have a culture of
losing. It needs to be destroyed.
h
It's the old two wrongs don't make a right routine, John. They are both
lightweights (of note: so is the owner - who hired them in the first
place). As far as I can see, it's looked very much like the blind
leading the blind since Big Bill left.
Please see my old 'the fish stinks from the head' refrain. It's Woody's
touch that has perpetuated the SOJ feeling, carried over from nearly all
previous ownerships, that I get time after time of following this
franchise. We need a real, football-knowledgeable ownership who has the
skills to be a hands on owner who can turn this franchise around, or the
smarts to turn the football operations over to someone of Parcellian
stature and experience. Now is the time for Woody to think about
getting in touch with Holmgren or Dungy about taking over the Jets in
the way BP has done in Miami.
Not for nothing, although in a different sport, I would point to George
Steinbrenner as an example of the uber-committed owner who gave a 180
turn in the Yankees' fortune. Until we get that, I'm afraid the Jets
will continue to be on the outside looking in, perhaps once in a blue
moon bumping their noses into the fringe of success.
But back to Tannenbaum: ;) He has shown that he's really Daniel Snyder
North. He's spent money and draft picks lavishly, and as profligately
(thanks spell check!) as Danny Boy, with exactly the same nothing to
show for it. He does not deserve to have his contract extended.
Very good observations Harlan....and I couldn't agree more. The one thing
that is a constant with that ' 99 team and making chicken salad out of
chicken s*&t and what is happening in Miami is Dan Henning....I became
totally disgusted when the Jets management let him go. Herm was brought in
and the guy who was able to get VT to play like that in '98 and deal with
Lucas in '99 was let go. We can see what he is able to do with not too many
"groceries" in Miami. But I let that go in hopes they would still head in a
positive direction. Herm was obviously not that direction and he never will
be at any other franchise either. He is not a head coach. Neither is
Mangini, he looks like even more of a buffoon in Cleveland where he doesn't
have the tools around him to cover up his ineptness. In both cases, those
two guys had pieces of a successful team to mess with. Albeit, Mangini had
very little after Herm got done. Now, it appeared that Rex was trying to
build something, but I still had issues with some of those decisions
regarding who he let go etc. Now, it is beginning to look like he has more
on his plate just trying to figure out how to be a head coach than he can
handle let alone figure out how to change a culture of losing to a culture
of winning. I think Braylon Edwards comments were very accurate post game.
His statement about how they needed to approach a game was more to the point
of how to become a winner than anything Rex has said yet.
Amen....and you are right too.
> His statement about how they needed to approach a game was more to the point
> of how to become a winner than anything Rex has said yet.
Sanchez is reported to have said something similar.
Maybe Rex is bypassing us and giving the right message to the players
PC. If so, he has no need to inform us or the media and there is hope.
If not, things are not going to get better anytime soon.
h
In Sanchez, I heard a guy saying what the coach said. In Braylon, I heard a
guy who really is tired of being with teams that don't do what even he knows
you have to do to win. You can't expect to win, you can't delude yourself
into the belief that if you did all the prep etc. you will win, if you will
be a good person good things will happen. A team with a winning culture is
always on that edge and never comfortable...you have to feel like every down
is that important and play at an entirely different level of intensity. You
do see that with The Saints now, and have seen it with The Pats for some
time. I know Peyton Manning has it, I'm not sure about the rest of the team
out there. I don't think a lot of people really understand this notion of a
winning culture, it is an atmosphere that pervades every aspect of an
organization. I am positive, because I've met him, that Woody has no clue
what this is....Woody is a guy who believes in one thing only...himself and
his ability to just buy what he wants or tell somebody else to do it for
him. PC

Well I know two frustrated Jet fans, at least, who get it.
harlan
Break yer arm on that one, h? ;)

The problem with Cotchery is he was our only WR at the time. So we
bring in Edwards who has no experience with the offense. Again, this
issue falls on the FO but that was a back breaker.

There may have been few studs but there better players than Clowney,
Stuckey & Wright.

Culture is tough to build. I agree.
I think owner's impact are overstated unless they are too involved.
Baseball is different as there is no cap but again getting too involved
is also bad. Remember Mattingly played in one post-season when
Steinbrenner was most involved. Look at Jerry Jones.
Hire smart guys & then let them run the team. OK Maybe Johnson is an idiot.
I am starting to hate Tannebaum.

A bit like locking the barn door after the horse has been stolen, no. ;)
Yup. That's your typical Jets fan.
Riding high when they win, like a rat off
a sinking ship when they lose.

I was never a Tannebaum fan. I defended some of Bradway's picks.
