I should have qualified PK's arm comment a little bit more. His arm
strength is there when he throws properly. The problem is he rarely
throws with proper mechanics.
His biggest issue with his upper body mechanics is that left elbow. He
almost always has it too low as it should be at shoulder height and is
usually pointing straight down.
Then there is his footwork or lack thereof. His running ability hurts
him greatly here as he has happy feet. That may be good for a penguin
but for a NFL QB it is usually a death sentence.
I always remember the coaches in pee wee telling us that a throw starts
at the toes and travels all the way up through the body culminating with
the release. If you don't start with proper footwork it is impossible to
consistently throw accurately, hence Tebow's poor completion percentage.
Take an out pattern for example. Tebow has a habit of having his front
foot point towards the sideline instead of at his target. This forces
the front leg to bow inward awkwardly. This then results in poor
velocity and an extended throwing motion. That in turn produces a long
release giving opposing corners plenty of time to react and close any
separation that a receiver is able to achieve.
A pass on an out pattern may only cover 7 yards in distance downfield
from the line of scrimmage but is actually traveling 40-50 yards
depending on where he is throwing from on the field. With the speed of
NFL corners you cannot get away with these kind of flaws in your
mechanics consistently.
