There is no experimentation going on with the Giants and their
quarterback situation. The search is over. The team is entirely
comfortable going into training camp — and heading into the season —
with Tim Hasselbeck as the backup to Eli Manning.
Getting awarded Hasselbeck off waivers from the Redskins was no minor
move in the minds of the Giants, as they coveted him, hoped he'd get cut
and then sweated out the waiver process until they received word last
Monday that they got their man.
"Hasselbeck was a gift," GM Ernie Accorsi yesterday told The Post. "We
did not expect him to become available. We have a high regard for him.
If he were a free agent he would have been at the top of our list. This
is not one of these stop-gap things."
The Giants believe they have their three quarterbacks in place, with
Jesse Palmer expected to beat out Jared Lorenzen for the No. 3 job, a
role Palmer filled last season while not throwing a single pass.
At first, when the Giants picked up Hasselbeck, 27, it seemed as if he
and Palmer, 26, would compete for the backup job. That battle likely
will not emerge, as Hasselbeck is clearly in the lead for the No. 2
spot.
Accorsi went as far as to say that, other than Kerry Collins, Hasselbeck
"talent-wise is as good a backup as we've had here," although Accorsi
did give Kurt Warner an edge over Hasselbeck in experience.

The only way this could be a mistake on the Giant's part is if
Hasselbeck knocks up some player's girlfriend ... there's no downside
... I,like you, don't see an upside ... but if EA is right ... the
Redskins will have a downside ... The Giants will have him instead of
Waiver Wire holding the clipboard ... as the alternative ... plus we'll
know all about the Redskins playbook ... um ... er ... maybe that's NOT
a good thing Martha ...

Skins problem is more a lack of talent, isn't it? The best playbook in the
world can't make up for that.

Every year they make moves, spend stupid money and waste draft picks to fix
the problems from the previous regime. Brad Johnson is shown the door.
Super Bowl ring. Stephen Davis, see ya, Super Bowl appearance. They trade
down to get Patrick Ramsey, passing on Clinton Portis, (never give Ramsey a
real chance), and then trade a 6th overall pick player in Bailey and a 2nd
round pick used for Tatum Bell for Clinton Portis. They get a diamond in
the rough in Pierce and they can't even keep him they are so messed up. If
you really look at their moves the last few years, you'd be in stitches.
Hasselbeck is a good backup QB in this league, and he's got some wins on his
young resume. He's cheap. It was a gift, just like them messing up with
Pierce. Just thank the NFL Gods for Snyder. We do, as one Eagles fan
pointed out, Trotter wouldn't have come back to the Eagles if Snyder didn't
give him an outrageous amount of money two years ago, he'd still be looking
for a payday. Long live little Dan.

Oh, I love Snyder. As long as he keeps sticking his nose into football
operations (which he obviously doesn't understand), the Redskins will
be the bottom of the barrel in the NFC East. Even when the Giants suck,
at least they're not as pathetic as Washington. I'm absolutely amazed
that a guy who is so brilliant in the business world can suck this bad
as an owner. He never seems to learn anything.

I don't think Hasselbeck is necessarily bad. I just think that
Accorsi's gushing over him is a little overstated.
