Meriweather: It pisses me off that a kid with this potential and
skills could be so pig headed and uncoachable (my personal
conclusion). Addition by subtraction. He apparently confused the
backfield assignments too many times. He was the Maroney of the
defense. Then they also let Sanders go at the same time. This is a
new look backfield in a big hurry. Sergio Brown must be for real.
I'm not sure about the depth behind Brown and Chung. To me the entire
backfield is going to be suspect for a while. I do have rock solid
confidence that the coaching staff realized that Meriweather was not
an asset any more.
Sammy Morris: Good man. I loved what he did when he was on the
field, but ..... (and we know the rest.)
Brandon Tate: Bust WR, and another Chad Jackson, Bethel Johnson.
Fell way off with kick returns after the explosive start last year,
didn't catch any balls when given the chance to redeem himself
Thursday. He added very little to the team. Slater is going to at
least add something and should get the chance to play before guys like
Tate.
But who returns kicks now?

Wasn't it the Saints game that exposed Meriweather? Or is my memory
discombobulating?
I want to agree that it was more than money. Lots of beat writers
have been warning about this cut because there is something that
Meriweather would or could not do in certain coverages. Am I over
simplifying to say that he would take too many risks? He would go for
the ball instead of the tackle when there was no safety over the top?
Wasn't that the issue in the Saints game even?
Oh well, pro bowl material but not pro bowl brain is the way I look at
it. Sanders is like the opposite.

That being said, what else is new in the NFL? We went through this
when Bill cut Lawyer Milloy. It's a case of a system changing and
demanding new and different actions, and the player is unable or
unwilling to go along. I think Adalius Thomas is proof of that.
There was a guy who had all the physical tools but was just unwilling
to do what was asked.
I don't think any coach can control reactions like that. All he can
do is be honest and cut the guy instead of trying to avoid
embarrassment. I rate Bill highly at that game. He will cut an
Adalius Thomas or a Lawyer Milloy or a Brandon Meriweather if and when
the situation demands it.
I'm not "glad to see you go, Brandon", but glad to see the thorn
removed from the defense's side. He was not doing what was asked, and
he was causing dangerous screwups in the backfield.

I think cutting Milloy was strictly about money, not about
performance. I think cutting Merriweather was mostly about
performance. Merriweather was still on his rookie contract, Milloy was
not, and he was due to make, like, twice as much as Merriweather. And
the cap has increased by around 50% since Milloy was cut.

Yeah, he was a disappointment, and I got the impression that he was
one of the main figures when guys like Wilfork talked about "problems"
in the locker room.

In his case I'd bet that "not doing what was asked" was mostly about
not getting it, not about having attitude.
It's gonna be interesting to see how things go with Haynesworth. I'm
predicting a great season for him.
