The Patriots' underachieving, only-semi-durable, second-year running back
might want to ponder these comments by Green Bay coach Mike McCarthy
regarding the until recently unheralded Ryan Grant, who rushed for 156
yards on 29 carries Sunday against the Raiders: "I really like the way he
runs. No wasted steps. One cut. Always moving forward. That's the style
in the NFL that works best, I think." Maroney was drafted 21st overall by
New England in 2006. Grant was obtained by the Packers this year from the
Giants in exchange for a late-round draft pick, after spending the 2005
season in New York on the practice squad and last season on the Injured
Reserve list. Unlike Grant, Maroney tries to make too many cuts, does too
much dancing, too often runs East-West, instead of North-South. As the
weather worsens, and it becomes increasingly difficult to throw the
football consistently, the Patriots will need to rely more on Maroney,
who thus far in his brief career has not run as well as his former
teammate at Minnesota, the Cowboys' Marion Barber.

I agree. I think Morris going down was a horrible and underestimated
loss.

That's what I'm thinking.

This ain't like basketball. Basketball is an easy game to follow. There's
so much happening in every play in a football game, I don't know how it is
possible to tell without looking at the film afterwards and in slo mo at
that. Apparently, there are some people in here that have that equipment or
a really, really good set of eyes. All we can do is really appreciate the
result of the play. Did Moss make a catch? Did Maroney break a long one
off. Did Stallworth get some YAC?

The Pats are 13-0. If Coach is happy with the way things are, so am I.

I think Maroney's being bashed a lot lately, and I'm not sure why. He's
supposedly dancing a lot behind an offensive line that historically has had
some issues creating holes. This is the same offensive line that regularly
gets their running backs hit behind the line of scrimmage and doesn't fare
well generating push in short yardage situations. Yet we're supposed to
believe they're creating Hutchinson-sized holes. Meanwhile, Maroney is
averaging 4.2 ypc, isn't putting the ball on the ground, and reportedly is
improving on blitz pickup and receiving. Neither Faulk nor Morris have a
substantially better per carry average.

I'm not saying that Maroney's the best running back out there. He isn't. I
don't think he's terribly physical, he seems to have some durability issues,
and I'm not as thrilled with his blitz pickup skills as the coaching staff
is. But if the Pats are interested in upgrading the running game next year,
they might want to consider the line before the running backs. For
starters, I'm not completely sold on Kaczur and O'Callaghan apparently
hasn't distinguished himself either.

Yeah, I think he's been unlucky with the run blocking. And still:

Laurence Maroney 4.2 YPC 0 20+
Willis McGahee 4.2 YPC
Joseph Addai 4.1 YPC
Willie Parker 4.0 YPC 11 20+

The Patriots RB Sammy Morris, he had rushed for over 100 yeards in at
least 2 games, maybe 3, so the holes are there. LM has only rushed for
over 100 yeards in 1 game i beliave, and it was a bad team anywho. And
lets not forget, this is practically the same o-line that opned up
holes for Dillion and he rushed for over 1600+ yeards.
In addition, Kevin Faulk, when hes been in there, hes looked good, so
all this about "holes not being there" is rubbish.
So the Patriots nations really needs to stop making excuses, and wake
up to the fact that this year hes not that good. Im giving his one
more year, if he doesnt perform, im calling him a bust.

Well, Maroney should certainly get some opportunities against the Jets
who are currently 30th in the NFL in terms of rushing yards allowed
per game.

To be fair to Maroney, I think lately he has heeded the wish of the
coaching staff and has done less "dancing" back there and just picked
a hole and hit it with mixed results.

I am a firm believer that some RB's (and the O-line) need a certain
amount of carries to establish a rythym. The Pats, depending on your
perspective, either don't have the patience to do that or have such a
successful passing attack that they don't feel the need to do that.

I think it is too early to give up Maroney and that he will continue
to improve his game if given enough opportunities. Sure he has been
banged-up a couple of times and people are right to question his
durability.

Just remember though, one of the key factors in letting Curtis Martin
go to Jets years ago were the questions about his durability. He ended
2 of his seasons with the Pats (and his senior year of college) on IR
but ended up having a great career.

I am not comparing the two guys in terms of talent, I am just saying
it may be too soon to jump to any conclusions about Maroney.

But Cincy and Cleveland (the teams that Morris got 100 against) were good
teams? That doesn't make any sense.

If you look at the three games that they played in common, their stats are
almost identical. Since Maroney came back from his injury, his stats aren't
quite as good as they were earlier. There's no telling whether that's due
to Maroney himself or something else (eg. line, opponent, etc). You want to
believe it's Maroney, but you're basing it on erroneous data (see below).

3 guys are the same. But let's not forget that the line struggled in '05
and '06, and this year switched to a zone blocking scheme which is
considerably different. If the Patriots were so happy with the run blocking
from this OL last year, why did they switch to a zone blocking system this
year?

I like Faulk. He has great vision, but he's also much smaller than Maroney.
There are holes that are there for Faulk that aren't there for Maroney.

Besides, he's not faring much better than Maroney. The statistics bear that
out too.

Will Belichick do the same? I highly doubt it.

The blocking for draw plays from the shotgun with 4 WRs is very different
from the blocking for other runs with one or two TEs in the package and
Brady under center. You cannot compare Faulk and Maroney in that way, since
they are in the game in very different situations.

I also think this is part of the issue. they would like for him to
change his style some and approach things a little different, the
classic 'one move and hit the hole' issue, but then don't give him the
repetitions to get it done. so essentially, he has like 8 to 10 carries,
sometime only 3 or 4 touches to a drive, to change his style, all along
trying to get his groove and gain a few yards to keep defenses honest,
and then the hook comes and we don't see the rest of the game. its
actually kinda sad at times.

now, in the Pats behalf, I think its a catch 22 thing right now. once
Morris got hurt and Maroney has shown another year of injury concerns,
they had no choice but to keep him on the self as long as possible as
after Faulk for limited use, they have no 'starting' RB's on the roster.
they have to keep him in the garage for that once day, if it ever does
come, that they really do need for him to bring a run game in an
inclement hard-nosed Dec/Jan home game.

so, you'd like to work him, say, some the recent blowout game where they
run most of the late 3rd quarter and 4th and give him and the OL time to
work it out, but, because he is just plain fragile to date, they can't
risk it. they may really, really need some semblance of a running in the
near future and if you work him in a game that is already in hand and he
hurts himself again, then its down to Eckle in an important horrible
weather day or the big game against the Colts and you do need need to
get the opposing defense to at least have some bit of respect for the
running game. to this end, I think they view it as, every game we can
get by without slamming him into the line over and over prior to the
post season, the better it it is be right now.

> I think it is too early to give up Maroney and that he will continue

again, I believe much of his development, or lack there of, has to do
with the injury concerns. its a fact right now, he just can't stay
completely healthy for more than 4 or 5 games in a row and then he gets
dinged. that is a viable 'he's a bust' argument, but I hold out hope
that he is one of those guys that takes a few years in an NFL
conditioning program to kick the injury bug. many have in the past, hope
it works out for him and they don't have to seek out another starting RB.

thankfully Morris is waiting in the wings and shown he could almost be
the starting RB himself so that should keep them away from a early, to
any, day 1 RB pick. still, I have seen enough moments of flash to think
that if Maroney did get the ball 20 times a game for 3 to 5 weeks in a
row and stay healthy throughout all that (the big qualifier), he and the
OL would learn to run him and we would not be so disappointed.
