Current Forecast for Jets Game

As of Tuesday morning, the forecast for Sunday is:

27 degrees
70% chance of snow
28 mph winds

This will not help the passing game. The good news is this is New
England and there's plenty of time for the forecast to change, but the
weather situation merits watching. I was leaning towards taking the
"under" anyway even on a clear day. People talking about scoring 70+
on the Jets are out of their minds. This is Mangini's one and only
chance to salvage something from this season and get revenge upon
Belichick, and I fully expect him to use all the usual tactics to
"shorten" the game. My prediction is the Patriots won't score more
than 35 points, but that high 20s will be enough to win the game.

Bad weather might be the thing that blows the "historic season".

Consider this: The Steelers are a far better team than the Dolphins, yet bad
Pittsburg weather nearly created an upset.

There has also been a slight degradation in the Pats WR's catching the ball
as the weather has turned colder. Against playoff defenses, the timing
between QB and receivers gets more critical. Difficult to adjust (for both
sides of the ball) in ice or snow.

To boot, the strength of the running game has not been demonstrated since
Morris went down. An ice storm (currently forecasted for the weekend), could
make the Jets game far closer than expected.

Bad weather will not deter the Patriots from putting a beating on the
hapless Jests Sunday. It could be the Apocalypse of weather conditions and
the Patriots will continue the with slaughter. It's a matter of priorities,
the Jests must be punished and humiliated.

"Nearly" is the key word here.
And it wasn't so much the weather as the crappy field that did it.

We get it, you predict a Jets victory and say trash talking is a good thing.
Did you take a stupid pill this morning?

I agree that none of the next three games are gimmes. However, the Jets are
currently pretty awful. Clemens may have a future, but in the present he's
pretty bad. I like Thomas Jones and Leon Washington a lot, but that line is
a joke. And defensively, they just can't do much against the pass. Revis
looks like he's going to be a really good corner in this league, but I see 3
PIs/holds coming from him in this game. Harris seems to have improved their
run D, but there's no chance in hell that he'll be able to cover Welker.

Hell, I'd take the Dolphins to beat the Pats before I'd take the Jets.

The Steelers suck on the road, they've proven that repeatedly this
year.
Bad Weather Score: Pats 24, Jets 0
Good Weather Score Pats 70, Jets 0

No matter how well the Jets play, NE still needs to win to get
homefield throughout, so they aren't going to lose this one.
They could easily lose one of the next two, but not this one.

I think the Dolphins probably don't want the distinction of being the first
winless team since the Bucs. And Cam needs to show some sort of finish if
he wants to keep his job.

The Jets might be the better team since they have a running back right now.
But they really screwed the pooch this offseason. Their lines are pushovers
(literally), and defensively they don't match up well with the Pats
offense -- a couple good players in the secondary, but a couple really bad
ones too; and they can't generate a pass rush without bringing the house.
I think the Pats will score close to 40, and I don't see how the Jets can
come anywhere close to doing the same.

I don't agree with the Jets giving up. I do agree they suck, but they try to
win every game. Just a matter of a lot of bad players on the team and not a
very good HC.

Leaving the top open for Moss and Stallworth? I doubt it. Unless they'll
use the nickel as the base defense with Rhodes as the nickel corner (which
is actually exactly what I'd do if I was the Jets).

Teams have been dedicating their linebackers or their nickel corners to
Welker. The Redskins did an ok job with that, IMO, but that was because of
London Fletcher -- who I consider to be one of the best ILBs in football.
The Jets currently don't have a London Fletcher.

Well, the scores are intended to be metaphors, as in "I think the
Pats will beat the Jets by a large margin, such as...." But yes, the
Pats
could shut them out. The Jets scored 3 against Buffalo and the
Cowboys.
I mean, it's a lot more likely that the Jets would be shutout than the
Pats, don't you think?
How about this: Pats 49, Jets 13?

I think that score is a lot more likely.
It all depends on how well Clemens is playing and how healthy the Jets WR
are next week.
Against the Bills and Cowboys, Coles didn't play in either game and Cotchery
was playing hurt.

That is what I think they will be doing unless we see the ice storm everyone
is predicting right now.
I also hope they overload the right side of the line when the Pats go with
an empty backfield and blitz Rhodes.
That seemed to work well for the Ravens.

No, but Rhodes is as fast if not faster than Fletcher and can cover.
It will be interesting to see if Rhodes extends his four game pick roll he
is on right now.

It'll be interesting to see if they use him in that way. The Pats have
spent a considerable time doing something similar on defense this season.
It's similar to the "big nickel", but then again, sometimes it looks like
it's just Rodney playing OLB. The Pats, however, have the luxury of having
two pretty good safeties behind Rodney. The Jets have some major issues at
safety behind Rhodes. So they might instead take the approach of trying to
get your best football players on the field -- Barton, BT, etc are better
than Anam, Smith, or whoever else the Jets use back there. That's what I
predict they'll do. And yet another reason why I think safety is a major
offseason need for the Jets.

> I also hope they overload the right side of the line when the Pats go with

> That seemed to work well for the Ravens.

It did. But it didn't work so well for the Steelers. Contrary to popular
belief, the Ravens didn't blitz very often. Brady and Belichick both
remarked on this last week, and Reiss reported something like only 17
blitzes from them in that game. I think the "blueprint" to beat Brady is to
bring pressure with only 4 guys. He's been killing the blitz all year. You
look at the two best defensive jobs against Brady, and they were games where
they generated pressure on him without bringing the house -- Indy and
Baltimore. I'm almost thinking that this should be a game where the Jets
use a 4-line front (no, I'm not Michael) and concede the run to beat the
pass. Ellis against Kaczur is a favorable matchup for the Jets. But I
suspect Mangini will try to disguise blitzes and do that stupid
running-start thing. Bad idea.

Yeah, but Rhodes is a DB. Fletcher is a lot more stout against the run, so
they can use him up there in the base D.

I considered it, and found it stupid.

1) Pittsburgh's poor maintenance of Heinz Field prevented that game
from being a *loss*. They got outplayed. (With help from a cheap
shot on Ricky Williams.)
2) Pittsburgh is HIGHLY overrated, losing to the Jets, Donkeys and
Cardinals.
