Flannery starting, Hegamin out?

Hegamin's got the youth, he's good & big. I'm thinking/hoping they're
only using Flannery for the gap, Hegamin's in there soon, probably
game 15 or 16.

Of course, Chad's only thinking is that the Cowboys are out of the playoffs
already and should just play the younger players while the better players sit
on the bench. Hence, his thinking is that Hegamin, who might have a future,
should start ahead of Flannery, who is a better guard right now.
Fortunately, the Cowboys realize that they're still in the hunt for the NFC
East title or a wild card spot and therefore will put the best players on the
field. Hence, Flannery starts Sunday ahead of Hegamin.

Flannery did a really good job against teh Cards when he started for Nate
Newton. Give him a chance. He may be a little rusty, but he was a very
solid guard when he played for Houston. The word is that Hegamin may spend
some time at the RG spot becuase Newtons knee is acting up again.

Flannery is better suited and more prepared to play guard in this game. That
doesn't mean he's a better lineman right now or would be next year.
First, Hegamin hadn't practiced at guard until Monday. Flannery has practiced
and played guard all season. Which would be quicker to recognize stunts and
blitzes and adjust accordingly? Obviously, the veteran Flannery.
Second, Flannery is no speed demon, but he's quicker than Hegamin. And because
the Panthers play a 3-4, the guards won't have a man over them and often will
be asked to get out and block a linebacker. Which would be more suited to block
on the second level or in space? Almost certainly it would be the quicker
Flannery.
Hegamin's lack of practice time at guard would make it difficult to start him
this week. He's not exactly a wiley old veteran (in fact, he's younger than
Scifres). And the assignments for the guards in this game would be tougher for
him than for Flannery. Therefore, starting Flannery is the right move.
Next week, Hegamin will get another week of reps at guard and might be able to
start then, although the Bengals also play primarily a 3-4. That will be a much
closer call.
Besides, Hegamin could see time at left guard depending on Newton's knee.

For whatever reason, they are dead set on Clay Shiver. I don't
know if it's just because Troy likes the way he gets the ball or
what, but I've given up saying anything about a substitution at
center. It's obvious it isn't going to happen.

The thing that irritates me about Shiver is that it just seems that he's a
big idiot. Last year in the Philly game on the Aikman INT that was returned
for a TD, Shiver ran the wrong route as an eligible TE which forced Aikman to
throw to damn Tyji "I should be a WLAF backup" Armstrong. Plus on two
separate occasions I can remember this year (with the last being the Green Bay
game), he's snapped the ball on the wrong damn count. Coupled with his
struggles early in the year calling proper blocking schemes against blitzes
(that Cardinal game was painful), one has to wonder about just how damn
intelligent this guy is. Now OL play is not the most cerebral of positions,
but one has to expect a modicum of intelligence from the C slot since he's
really the "QB" of the OL. My 2 cents anyway

Regardless, the reason he may be getting the nod this week is due to the
Panthers zone blitz scheme. Quickness and recognition in pass blocking is
much more important for interior guys against the zone blitz, since they
often have to move all over the place to hunt down blitzing LBs when
interior linemen drop into coverage. So this shouldn't be seen as a diss
of Hegamin, but more of a situational call based on Flannery's better
quickness and experience. Since the Bengals also run a lot of ZB, Flannery
will likely start there too should he play well against Carolina. For the
Giants, though, who are a classic 4-3, I'd expect to see the bigger
Hegamin in there, and I also expect him back in '98 unless his FA value is
too high.
And I have a question. Why will Hegamin not be a restricted FA after this
season?

against Big Daddy when they play the Bengals. Big Daddy over Shiver scares
the heck out of me.

Hegamin is in his 4th year. After 4 years of NFL experience, a player
qualifies for unrestricted status when his current contract expires.

Jones. Maybe its me, but it seems Jerry doesn't like to backtrack on his
football decisions. I think Shiver is one of the worst, if not the worst,
center in the NFL. Its hard to believe a team will real playoff
aspirations would continue to accept the level of play at center without
making any moves to improve it.

Shiver was a third-round pick. And it wasn't Jerry who wanted to draft him,
it was our OL coach, Hudson Houck. He said Shiver was the best center in the
draft. So blame Houck, even though he's considered one of the top few OL
coaches in the NFL.
Houck's also the one who liked Shane Hannah so much -- now THAT was a
horrible, horrible, horrible draft pick. I went to Michigan State and saw that
Tub O' Goo Hannah at a team meal. I knew right then he'd never be an NFL
player. He might have been MSU's worst starter when he was a senior. I almost
puked when we wasted a second-round pick on him. I wouldn't have drafted him in
the seventh round.
But, Houck's also the one who made the decision to draft Larry Allen in the
second round in 1994. The Cowboys weren't planning to draft him at all, but
when he somehow slipped into the second round, Houck made a quick trip to the
film room and watched the tapes of Allen in the Senior Bowl again. He was
convinced Allen would be a good player, and told Jerry to draft him.

Sounds like good poop to me...Do you have any suggestions at all on
who we may see the BoyZ draft and or pick up in the way of OL for next
year. Particularly at the Center position...

I guess they didn't want to pay a 40 year old man to play
center and get himself hurt. It's not as if he went to
another team.
