The Bengals. Aren't we lucky?

The season is already over. Cut out the cancer that is Marvin Lewis and
start the search for a new head coach.

Not to worry...they have Chris Henry back AND just signed Cedric Benson.
How could anything else possibly go wrong with those two around to right the
ship?

Cancer? C'mon. The cancer is in the corner office, dude. Marvin Lewis
is just yet another symptom of it.

Firing Lewis would be like taking pain medication for a bad injury.
Yeah, it makes the pain go away, for a while, but it's gonna keep
coming back until you do something about the actual problem.

I cannot wait to see Henry and Pacman back together again. Thuggin'

And the Lions fired Millen, not the Head Coach. I know I'm splitting
hairs but there ya go.

Secondly, Al Davis is a complete boob. What a screwed up owner.
Fired Kiffen over the phone, Classy.

Stop changing the subject. MB sucks. Your only excuse for Lewis is "but MB
is a bad GM". No one can argue that. But I can't think of one positive to
keep Lewis. He lost this team well before this season. Do you remember who
they passed up for Lewis? Tom Coughlin. Now, I'm not saying he would have
won a SB here, but I highly doubt he'd be this fucking inept. MB sucks,
sure. But Lewis is easily the worst coach in the NFL. You've just allowed
the Bengals to lower your standards enough not to notice.

Think carefully about what you just said. OK here's a hint:

Who is this "they" that passed up on Tom Coughlin?

And why exactly do you think "they" did so?

I'll wait right here.

You're not half as clever as you think you are. Let me say it again: Mike
Brown will not fire himself. Understand that yet or should I repeat it
another twelve fucking times?

Look, MB is a detriment which is all the more reason you need a good coach
in there for any success. You cannot excuse this team's lack of
fundamentals, such as piss poor tackling, or the dumbass playcalling by
putting it on MB. That's all Lewis. The only thing that might be worse
than his coaching ability is his leadership skills.

Look Turk, I'm not trying to make the case that Lewis is a great
coach, OK? I think he's OK, not the worst in the NFL but not
nearly the best either. But that's BESIDE THE POINT.

Best, worst, it doesn't matter because firing Lewis would not make
ANY FUCKING DIFFERENCE. Mike Brown is never going to hire Tom
Coughlin or Bill Cowher or anybody like that. If he fires Lewis he
will just replace him with another "up and coming" coach looking
for a chance, who will end up being the next
Shula/Coslet/LeBeau/Lewis. Nobody who's actually got what it takes
to DO what it takes would ever work for this guy. Never happened
yet. Never will.

That's why I say, it doesn't do any good to whine about Lewis. See
what I mean?

So, completely give up then? That seems to be the only other option by your
logic. If that's the way you feel and you still watch this team then your
expectations are even lower than I thought.

Personally, I think a competent coach might be able to do something with
this squad. This is a fairly talented squad, particularly offensively.
There is no reason they should be 0-4.

Can you offer any evidence that disproves the logic? I submit that
you cannot.

I grew up a Giants fan in the days of Tucker Frederickson, Fran
Tarkenton and Spider Lockhart. But I lived upstate and was never
really all that big a fan. I was more into the Syracuse Orangemen.
(This was back when they didn't suck.)

When I moved to Cincinnati I was, at best, amused by the Bengals.
When Lewis turned things around I started to actually be a fan of
the team, in the sense of caring whether they were successful.

But it seems that even Lewis is not immune to Mike Brown.
Eventually, they all come under the spell, or whatever the fuck it
is. Sad, that's what it is.

Personally, I think we're 2-2 with Joseph and Utecht in that Giants game,
and Palmer in the Cleveland game (the way Cleveland played, it's a given).
I blame Brown for the lack of secondary depth thanks to cutting O'Neil , not
Lewis. For a team who's strength is the passing game, the 60mph winds
against Tennessee certainly didn't work in our favor. There was no excuse
for losing that Baltimore game, though. I don't think this all falls on
Lewis as a lot of it is out of his control. I agree with Jeff in that the
common theme is Brown and the main problem with this team is a lack of
depth. That's where Brown and his cost cutting ways come in as well in
addition to some shaky draft picks over the last 3 years.

You can sum it all up as a lack of depth either by injury (Pollack, Irons
were expected to be significant contributors), by shaky drafts and not
wanting to go out and get free agents. It's hard to say how much of that
falls on Lewis and where Brown's authority plays a factor. Lewis does some
strange things during games with the timeouts and challenges, and seems to
let Bratkowski do some silly things during the course of the game but
calling him the worst coach is a stretch. None of us were saying that from
03-06.
