D.J. Monroe charged with DWI

By Alan Trubow | Sunday, November 15, 2009, 11:50 AM

Texas running back D.J. Monroe was arrested and charged with a DWI
early Sunday morning in Hays County.

Monroe was released on $3,000 bond about 30 minutes ago, according to
a Hays County Sheriff’s Office employee.

Monroe is just 20 years old and legally isn’t allowed to consume
alcohol.

Monroe, a redshirt freshman running back/receiver, is the only player
to return two kickoffs for touchdowns in school history.

He has carried the ball 20 times for 110 yards.

In the past couple of years, Texas coach Mack Brown has suspended
players for three games for similar infractions.

The head of Texas Football Media Relations John Bianco said, “We’re
aware of the situation and dealing with it at this time.”

Ugh, I knew this guy reminded me of Ramonce Taylor too much.

As a follow up to this. DJ Monroe has been suspended "indefinately."

And in the end, this is proof of how this staff is much better than those at
schools like Tennessee, etc.

I don't know, Tennessee kicked two off the team today. I'm thinking
Urban Meyre might have suspended him for half a game though.

Kicked 2 off the team. But there were 3 players involved, and I find it really
strange that the 1 that that wasn't kicked off the team was a ... STARTER!
Woah!!

But here is my problem: The players were arrested on Thursday. Kiffin didn't
announce anything until TODAY. TODAY!!! That is 4 DAYS!!!

All I really needed was for Kiffin on Thursday to annouce "The 3 players
involved in the incident have been suspended indefinately." He didn't need to
say anymore than that either! Then he could sit on it and let the legal system
run it's course.

And from what I hear, his hands were kind of tied in this case. These two were
set to be expelled from the University because of the charges. The only reason
that Jackson has not been suspended was because his lawyer is working to have
his charges reduced. But the word is that felony charges will get you expelled
form Tenn.

Mack has been recruiting pure character guys. He'd rather take a good
guy and coach him up than to get a marginal guy that is a better
athlete coming out of high school. Not everyone can make this
sacrifice, but Mack can recruit as such a high level, he can afford to
be this picky.

And I'd expect nothing less if a kid falls off the wagon. Getting
caught drinking under age is one thing. DWI is a whole nother level.

Ask Augie.

Good on ya, Mack.

Here's Mack's comments:

I released a statement yesterday on the D.J. Monroe situation. He's
indefinitely suspended while the legal process takes its course. We do
not want to insinuate in any way that he is guilty. That's something
that the legal process will take care of. He was out late and when we
have someone get involved with the law they are suspended at that time.
I do know that coach Applewhite texted him at 11:13 in his room. I do
know that he texted coach back at 11:15 and I do know that coach Rucker
checked him in his room at 11:45. Our coaches did everything they can
do and the kids are accountable. They need to understand that. That's
just part of the deal. What we will do is move forward. He will stay at
practice. He will be on the scout team. He will be disciplined further
inside for being out too late and then we'll see where it takes its
course but he will not have any impact on the game this weekend and he
will not be involved until we get more answers from the legal system.
His story is very different from the officer's story. That's why he
will have an attorney and that's why he will have his right to make
sure he shows his innocence if that's the case.

I agree very much good on him.

I don't know if this was a pure character issue. I have wondered about this and
thought - is it possible that MAYBE, just maybe these guys were screwing around
and did something really stupid as a prank/what they perceived as funny, and it
ended up being ... really stupid? Though I do agree they most likely had
criminal intent.

My point contrasting Texas and Tenn was that Mack was swift to act. He
suspended Monroe immediately. The word broke, and the suspension was the same
day. Plus because it was indefinite - Mack then has the option to mull things
over and then decide, 1 game, 2 games, more or even NO games (should this prove
to be an unfounded event).

On the flip side, Tenn has players in legal limbo and doesn't directly address
it until Monday. True, they didn't travel for their road game, but they
committed a felony act - that alone should warrant a suspension, something to
show, yes, this is serious and we cannot and will not stand for this.
