Applewhite: Not So Fast, Muschamp

AUSTIN -- Despite a report stating Major Applewhite will join former
Texas defensive coordinator Will Muschamp's new staff at Florida, the
status of Applewhite and the four other remaining Longhorns assistants
stayed unchanged Sunday night, a UT official said.

Muschamp was announced as Florida's new head coach Saturday night, and
the Gainesville Sun reported he was set to hire Applewhite , UT's
running backs coach and former quarterback, as his offensive
coordinator. But a full day after Muschamp's departure, Applewhite had
not told the Longhorns he planned to leave.

After a week in which one embattled assistant (Greg Davis) resigned,
two others (Mac McWhorter and Mike Tolleson) retired and his supposed
successor (Muschamp) took another job, UT head coach Mack Brown is
trying to hold the rest of his staff together while looking for two new
coordinators at one time.

Although UT's original plan was to wait until after the bowl season to
announce new hires, Muschamp's sudden departure might have sped the
process. The Longhorns are still said to be considering Alabama's Jim
McElwain, Boise State's Bryan Harsin, Tulsa's Chad Morris and
Applewhite for offensive coordinator, and former Miami coach Randy
Shannon is a top candidate to head the defense.
