Mark Stoops says his late father was huge influence on his life, coaching career
LEXINGTON — Kentucky coach Mark Stoops admits he’s been influenced by different people, but none had a bigger impact on his coaching career and life than his father, Ron. “He has had the biggest influence on me for sure. He had a great influence,” the Kentucky coach said. “He was very interesting. He was a simple guy, yet he had a great impact on a lot of people. Just the way he always went about his business. He always had a great work ethic. He always had a great demeanor of how he handled students or players he was coaching. He had a great way with the family. He just had a great influence on me.... more »

When Drew Barker spurned a Hall of Fame caliber coach and rising Southeastern Conference football program to stay home and play for Kentucky it set off a wild celebration inside the coaches' offices at Nutter Training Facility. Kentucky is on the move, something Mark Stoops and his staff believe is the future reality and not just a blip on the radar.... more »

Florida forward Yeguete expects big season from Kentucky's Cauley-Stein
Yeguete had no idea Cauley-Stein was an all-state receiver in high school. “That is funny. He must be really fast. That would be fun to watch him on the football field,” Yeguete said. “But he was good in basketball, too. Both he and Noel are good shot blockers. I don’t know if you can compare them. You saw Noel play more games, but they both change the game a lot, and (Cauley-Stein) could really be special next year.”... more »

Kentucky among many pursuing Texas prep star Mudiay
Ray Forsett, Mudiay's coach at Dallas Prime Prep Academy, said the 6-4 point guard, who is regarded as one of the top five overall players in the 2014 recruiting class, said Mudiay could play for virtually any school in the country. Mudiay has definite interest in Kentucky. He says Kentucky coach John Calipari is a “great guy and great coach” and likes the “good job” he has done with point guards such as Tyreke Evans, Derrick Rose, John Wall, Brandon Knight and Marquis Teague. Calipari has another highly touted point guard, Andrew Harrison, coming next season.... more »

After freshman season, Willie Cauley-Stein features new mindset on and off the court
“Hated school,” said John Calipari of Cauley-Stein. “He’d have told you at the beginning of the year: ‘I hate school.’ And I appreciate an honest guy. He didn’t BS.” What difference can a year make? Consider one of the reason’s Cauley-Stein gave reporters for coming back to UK for a sophomore season.... more »

Kentucky is bringing in one of the best recruiting classes in the history of college basketball.
Not a bad off season for a squad that saw its campaign end in March at the hands of Robert Morris in the NIT. The Harrison twins will lock down the perimeter and set up the litany of talented teammates that will be joining them on the court. Aaron Harrison will also do plenty of scoring himself from the shooting guard spot.... more »

HIGH PRAISE FOR HAWKINS
HIGH PRAISE FOR HAWKINS We'll leave you with this on your Monday morning: Did you notice how strongly Kentucky basketball coach John Calipari praised incoming freshman guard Dominique Hawkins last week? If not, take a look: “Dominique Hawkins, a young man from in state that just kind of blew me away with his will to win, his temperament on the court, his demeanor in helping his team win a championship,” Calipari said. “You always want to coach guys who understand. By winning a state championship and being down 16 two games, it shows what a tough mentality (he has), and with what I just went through, I wanted a tough point guard. I wanted one more tough, physical -- how bout this -- not just fighting, physical tough, how about mentally tough? How about not break down? How about, 'I'm bringing it and I'm not afraid to be 16 down and it has no effect on me?' That's what I saw in Dominique and why we recruited him.”... more »

Can Kentucky go 40-0 in 2014?
“We’re chasing perfection. We’re chasing greatness. We’re chasing things that have never been done in the history of our game,” said Calipari, sounding more like a carnival barker than the paranoid brethren of his profession. So much for the exhausted “one game at a time” drivel. In fact, UK’s coach made fun of that feeble mentality.... more »
