Julius Mays Commits to Kentucky K

Kentucky has gained their 5th member of the 2012 class in the form of a transfer.

Steve Jones of Rivals.com is reporting that Julius Mays has committed to the University of Kentucky.

Mays is transferring from Wright State where he was Horizon Newcomer of the Year and 2nd team all conference.

Mays had visited Purdue over the weekend.

Calipari has now added much needed depth to the backcourt and a proven 3 point shooter.

Now lets see if the Cats add front court depth.

I committed just a little bit ago. I told them I wanted to come play for them and they said they were excited to get to coach me. There was a lot of excitement from both sides," Mays said.

"You always want to stay in your home state but I have to do what is best for me and my family. It's a great opportunity to play for coach Cal and be a part of something special."

Constantly lauded for its reputation of producing pros, Mays says it was UK's sports leadership master's program that put the Cats over the top.

"That would stand out to any athlete but it was really about academics. Kentucky had a master's program that I'm applying to get into," Mays said. "The pros isn't for everybody and I'm big on my education. I want to work in sports when I get done with basketball. You have to use basketball and not let basketball use you."

A 6-foot-2, 195-pound combo guard who was forced to sit out the 2010-2011 season as a transfer from N.C. State, Mays averaged team-highs in points (14.1) and assists (2.5) as a junior last season on his way to being named Horizon League Newcomer of the Year and second team all-conference.

Mays is still in the process of finishing up course work at Wright State but is on schedule to graduate and should be eligible to play next season as a senior.

"I still have work to do at Wright State and I have to take my GRE to get into grad school at Kentucky but getting the decision out of the way is a big step," Mays said. "I have to finish up my work here, go about everything the right way and hopefully it will be a smooth process."

Mays, who also shot 42 percent from beyond the arc next season, is expected to give the Cats depth at both the point and shooting guard positions.
