“Hated school,” said John Calipari of Cauley-Stein. “He’d have told you at the beginning of the year: ‘I hate school.’ And I appreciate an honest guy. He didn’t BS.”
What difference can a year make? Consider one of the reason’s Cauley-Stein gave reporters for coming back to UK for a sophomore season.
“You know, I enjoy school,” he said. “It’s not like I was in any hurry to leave.”
“I like it around here where people know my name. That’s just fun.”
“Once the season ended it was kind of like my whole mentality changed instantly,” he said. “I wish it would have changed before the tournament happened. I kind of got like a dominating mindset going into this next year. I want to be the best in everything I do.”
If that new mindset helps Cauley-Stein improve his on-the-court play, it will undoubtedly excited fans and his coach, but Calipari insists he’s just as proud of the academic maturation.
“Really? So now a kid’s 6-10 so he’s different than your own child? That’s why I (talk about) the patience of this.”
