Mike Pearson
G school before spring practice:
Jeff Tedford - We put you up on a pedestal after you ended the
humiliation suffered during the Holmoe regime. We respect that the
Bears are bowl-bound again this year, but our expectations are higher
now: the Emerald, Las Vegas, even the San Diego County Credit Union
Poinsettia Bowls no longer qualify as acceptable definitions of
success.
Rick Neuheisel and Dennis Erickson - You guys float from school to
school, damaging reputations and inflicting short term success. This
season is either an expose' or you've got locusts in your fridges, hot
and cold running blood in your faucets, and you've been detected at
"toadproofumbrellas.com."
Pete Carroll - you're safe for now, but more losses aren't going to
help.
The Mikes, Riley and Stoops can pick up their Probationary Genius
cards at the end of the season. Beat a team with a pulse OOC and
build on this year's success next year for the laminated version (Take
'Zona to the Rose Bowl and you're in this year BTW). Same goes for
Jim Harbaugh.
Chip Kelly and Steve Sarkisian - The jury is still out on whether
you've made a silk purse out of a sow's ear, a sow's ear out of a silk
purse, a sow's ear out of a sow's ear, or a silk purse out of a silk
purse.
Paul Wulff - sorry pal, you can't polish a turd.

How about a little perspective. The Trojans are 3-1 this year against
ranked teams while playing 6 of their first 9 games on the road. At home
for the final three but with so many key injuries anything can happen. With
Stanford and Arizona still to play PC has a chance to have his team finish
6-1 against ranked competition. Winning out means a BCS Bowl for the 8th
consecutive year. Of course he's safe.

Wait. Who the hell gave Neuheisel a Genius card to begin with? And
where's that short-term success you promise?

I'm not saying he's at any risk of getting fired, I'm just saying that
if he were to lose three conference games (or more) with the talent he
has at his disposal, he is at risk of losing his "Genius Card." Like
you say, if he wins out, he easily keeps that card (although winning
out might mean a trip to whatever toilet bowl the Pac-10 #2 is stuck
with this year. Would they deserve better? Sure, but Oregon has to
lose twice more to give up the conference lead. If any Pac-10 team
were to get a 2nd BCS berth, 11-2 USC has a far better chance than
11-2 Arizona.)
I'm just trying to inject some humor while kvetching about the lack of
results we've seen from Tedford's teams the last couple of years.
Fairly or not, Tedford has been touted as the greatest refiner of QB
talent in a generation (the whole Carr through Rodgers string), but
the last few years have seen some really insubstantial efforts from
that position. Sure Longshore got Blounted in '07, which torpedoed
that year, and the receivers in '08 were nothing to write home about,
but brewing up a QB controversy (part of SC's problem at UW as well)
last year was a disaster, and Riley has been disappointingly
inconsistent this year. So, he gets his Genius Card pulled. Then I
got thinking about Erickson, and the _expectation_ of short term
success from NewWeasel, and then the actual success some teams are
having and there you go - the whole conference gets a blurt.

The internet mavens have already labelled his career a bust for losing
two Pac-10 road games this year. I'm still of the opinion that the
Pac-10 is much stronger than the prevailing (cough... east coast...
cough) wisdom.
Methinks expectations are set a little high for mere humans... :)
