I'm thinking about purchasing some of the old game videos that
someone posted on here over the weekend; one question - was
Schlichter the QB for the '79 season? I know, I'm an idiot...but I'm
a YOUNG idiot ;-)

No, Schlichter's an idiot and yes, he was QB for the 78-81 seasons. He did
beat scUM on a 4th down play, evading 3 or 4 rat scum tacklers to win the
game so I guess he's only a half idiot.

I always wonder how Art would have turned out if Woody hadn't resigned...

I can't imagine that Woody would have had any effect at all if only because
Schlicter would never have let Woody know he was developing a gambling
addiction. In fact, he probably was in denial about the whole thing anyway.
I doubt that any kid gambling, taking drugs, drinking excessively would ever
let his coaches know what he was up to.

He certainly was! One of the best executions of the two minute drill came
that year under Art vs UCLA in the middle of the year. It was Earle's first
season, the Bucks went into the RB undefeated and just barely lost to USC. I,
like a lot of folks, thought the next few years with Art were going to be like
the glory days of Kern but it didn't happen. Actually, Art's next two seasons
were the start of the 9-3 campaigns.

Correct me if I'm wrong, and I certainly could be since this
assumption is based on rumors, but didn't Earle the Pearl take Art to
Scioto Downs a couple of times?

Schlichter to Scioto Downs a time or two. Earle also told May that during
Art's career at OSU, Schlichter's biggest problem was speeding tickets, not
gambling.

rumors also alleged that either the Dispatch or Plain Dealer or both had one or
more photos of both Earle and Art in the same photo at the race track (anything
is
possible with a wide angle lens). Never ever heard that Earle took Art or that
Art went with Earle. I would doubt that was ever the case. However, it the
photo
stories are true that would certainly be evidence that Earle knew that Art was
present at the track and may have been aware of whether or not Art was betting.

You underestimate the power of Woody.
He'd put the skunkeye on Ole Double-or-Nothing and Art would be hyp-mo-tized
into telling him everything.
