From Bskball newsletter...

THE LATEST: The Raptors have had light discussions with Keon Clark regarding
a contract extension. Clark is a restricted free agent next year, but in the
on going continuity theme in Toronto, the club is trying to tie him down.

....we'd better not give him more then the 4.5 million exemption...

I don't think he has shown he is even worth that. Keep in mind you can get
a borderline all-star PF like Mason for 4.5 Million these days. Seriously
they shouldn't extend him until he shows something this year. Consistency
would be nice. Better D and a better handle on his post moves would be even
better.

How do you sign up for their newsletter? I couldn't find a mention of it on
their site.

I agree with all that, but at the same time I love Keon. I think this year
we will see if he has the potential to become starter material. I recently
re-watched a few games that Keon happened to kick ass in, along the lines of
18pts 8rbs 6blks.

I realize he hasn't proven much, but god I love having him on the team.

BTW hi Mat. I'm still here lurking on a daily basis :)

I loved him when he ran wild swatting the balls an scooping rebounds as
well. My only beef is that it was pretty darn rare. More often he seemed a
bit out of sync both offensively and especially defensive. Either he only
flourishes when the match-ups favour him or he is really inconsistent in his
effort. Hopefully he turns it on to fight for playing time. Out of all the
non-all-stars players on the team this guy has the most potential. I think
Alvin is playing at or close to his full potential while Keon has only shown
spurts of what he could do.

However, I suspect his game will suffer this year. Lack of playing time
will kill him, stifle Bradley, and bury Skinner. GG has to make a trade or
two hoopefully (sic! I liked this typo so I left it in.) bringing in a SF
and a PG. With Davis locked up for a while and Bradley trapped in at
bargain basement rookie prices it would not surprise me to see Keon &
Skinner shopped (unfortunately they can't be packaged because of the
rules...Skinner would have to be dealt in a solo deal).

I wouldn't be upset if we traded Keon and his potential in exchange for
filling a need with a middle quality veteren. Potential in NBA speak means
expensive when contract renewal time comes up and I would prefer the rappies
maintain some flexibility for when the Dream is over..

BTW: the outlook spellchecker suggest Keno for Keon. Right now I think that
could be accurate. A pretty big gamble if we extend him at prime dollars..

Really? I'd be curious to see some of the newsletters. I have watched the
NBA insider on ESPN and they almost never have anything more than I put on
my site everyday that I find from just using a few web tools.

That is the problem with Keon. He is really our only tradable asset, and he
is sort of surplus on the Raps. Personally I think I would like to see JYD
start at SF most of the time, making Keon the first and primary backup PF/C.
With MoPete's ability to play either the 2 or 3 and Hakeems added scoring to
the starting lineup I think this works. Sure JYD brings a great spark off
of the bench, but so does Keon.

AW
Carter
JYD
Davis
Dream

Keon (for HA)
MoPete
Childs
Dell
Bradley

With any of the first three first to come in depending on matchups.

I think this works with the flexibility of Keon (pf/c), JYD (pf/sf),
Peterson (sf/sg), Carter (sg/sf) and Alvin (pg/sg). Works for me at least.

Getting back to the point, I agree that despite the potential and fun of
Keon, if a good small forward or point guard could be had in return it would
be a no brainer. This year will be critical for the Raptors to get a good
evaluation of Keon. Quality big men are hard to find (we'll call him big
even though I think i weigh more at 5'7 :).

Keon Clark is being offered an extension of at least $5 million for the
first year. Jerome and Alvin Williams will be earning around $5 million
each for the 2002-03 season, so Clark will not be paid less than them.

With Michael Jordan back just in time for the negotiations of the TV
rights, everything will shoot up next year: television revenues, luxury
tax threshold, salary cap, mid-level exception, etc. The mid-level
exception will be much higher than this year's $4.5 million. There will
probably be no luxury tax.
