Happened in the back court, not front court.

This is what I found in the NBA rule book:

"6) one free throw attempt and possession of the ball on the sideline
nearest the spot where play was interrupted if an offensive player, or a
teammate, is fouled while having a clear-path-to-the-basket. The ball and an
offen-sive player must be positioned between the tip-of-circle extended in
the backcourt and the basket in the frontcourt, with no defender between the
ball and the basket when the personal foul occurs. There must be team
control and the new play must originate in the backcourt, including
throw-ins, and the offended team must be deprived of an opportunity to score
an uncontested basket."

So it appears you can be in the backcourt. I think the refs missed it.

Except that it didn't happen in the backcourt. I'm pretty sure you're
just being the messenger here. I mean, I guess that WAS the rationale, but
the replay showed that 'Melo grabbed him just after he crossed the line.

They blew that one, simple as that

Ariza was clearly in the front court, and I've seen it called in the
backcourt before too. That's dictionary definition of clear path.

I should add that was the rule in 2004. Now two free throws are awarded
insted of one. Correct?

Its not the only one they blew tonight thats for sure. How about the
play before that where Melo bumps away Kobe for a noncall then gets a
call on Ariza for the same bump?

I don't think Trev had control yet.

Was not the place... the rule says "There must be team control"

"A team is in possession when a player is holding, dribbling or passing
the ball."

Ariza had just batted the ball away into the front court and was
chasing it. That is not officially having possession Not having not
caught or dribbled it..

So it was ruled a loose ball foul.

And apparently it wasn't ruled as a steal. Which is lame.

You can not steal the ball from a player if he does not yet by rule have
possession. Melo never came close to having possession, it barely
touched his outstretched finger tips.

And in this case ariza did not gain possession. Touching/deflecting the
ball is not 'possession'.

"A team is in possession when a player is holding, dribbling or passing
the ball."

Neither player had possession.

Hence no steal, no clear path foul. Loose Ball Foul is the Correct call
no matter what the announcers are calling..

Martin had the ball and was passing it - how is that Not Possession?
From your explaination, steals are impossible if someone is passing
the ball.

Martin had possession - clearly a steal and a clear path foul. If it
had happened in any other quarter than the 4th with just a couple
minutes remaining, it would have been called that way.

When he passed it. Once it touched Melo the clock started and it was no
longer Martin's inbounds pass... and Melo did not have control of the
ball. Ariza tipped it away. Ariza never had possession as defined in the
rules.

The clear path foul states the team has control of the ball. Tipped away
down court does not fit that.

Was neither.

I doubt that. It is rarely called because of the criteria needed.

Ariza was fouled in the frontcourt (left foot in, right foot floating
over backcourt), depends on what "originate" means. The "play"
originated in the backcourt, but the foul did not, but it looks like
they blew it by the rule.

He did until grabbed.

The wording is 'team control' - DEN had control, Trev tipped the ball
but did not get control of the ball ever (due to the foul).
