Two Lakers Stars Busted for Traveling Violations

The Los Angeles Lakers seem to be having trouble on the road. Two of
the team's stars were nailed on one of L.A.'s most famous freeways
recently for breaking some driving laws.
TMZ has learned Lamar Odom and Andrew Bynum were each pulled over on
the 405 freeway in the last few days.
Odom was popped for speeding -- law enforcement sources tell us he was
going more than 80 miles per hour.
Bynum was busted for shadier circumstances -- cops say he had illegally
tinted windows on his Mercedes Benz.
Fun Fact: In the State of California, it's illegal to have ANY
aftermarket tinting applied to the front driver's side and passenger
windows in your car ... who knew ?!

After 40 years in SoCal, driving for most of them, 80 doesn't seem bad at
all. You would either have to blatantly pass a cop or maybe they have
tightened up enforcement because of the fiscal problems. Both in Cali and
here in Hell if you ticket everyone driving 80 on the freeways you'd sure be
busy.
When I was taking driver's ed in HS, my older brother came home and told my
mother - "Guess who just passed me doing about 80?" The instructor just kept
telling to go faster.
Here in Hell everybody has their front windows tinted, but everyone should
have known it was illegal in Cali.

I did. I was almost hauled off to freaking jail 'cause a Ventura cop
and I got into a yelling match over my wife's T-Bird's tinted windows
several years ago. Cop was rude. Well, I was rude right back so I'm
not entirely blameless but damn, sometimes you just gotta tell 'em
what's what, you know?
Bastard made me peel off the tint right there. To top it off, he
forced me to take the tint off the back window and back side windows
as well, knowing full well that tinting those windows was allowed.
That sucked a fatty. I went down the next day and had it re-installed.
Not on the front side windows though.
Actually, I probably got off easy considering how I was talking to
him. If the altercation had been with any other PD in the state they
probably would have Tased me and thrown me in the klink.

I've been on the 405 when if you weren't doing 80 somebody would most
likely be up your backside. Hell, even in the "slow" lane. Kinda
surreal traveling at those velocities when traffic is practically
bumper to bumper. ;-)

Now poor Canzano is grasping at straws:
Canazno last year writes an article praising Roy including retreating to
the tunnel to pray while he listens to the anthem..
A private guy who should be in the public's eye
(jocking him for the all-star game)
(After pointing out how hard it is to get a private moment)
So yeah. Roy retreats to the tunnel before games. He bows his head. He
listens to the anthem. And Roy said: "I say a little prayer and have a
little time to myself." And maybe that doesn't strike you as a team
leader thinking team, and being part of a team, but his teammates don't
mind.
He's always there for his team when the lights go up, isn't he?

it this way. I guess he could always choose to play overseas and relieve
himself of the indignity of having to carry in his pockets those many
greenbacks containing the photos of dead American Presidents, the words
"The United States of America," and the name of God.

Well, I went back and read the story and comments (oh the humanity!!)
and there seems to be a fair bit of canzano bashing going on as well.
If Brandon Roy wants to do something besides stand up for the national
anthem, well, I respect his choice but he's got to own it and take
some heat too, not say stuff like "I'll stop if it bothers people..."

This is as deeply troubling an "observation" as any one is likely to
hear, regardless the controversy, in this country. Incredible and unnerving.
Having been brought up to speed on this flap---thanks to these links,
I'm strongly suspecting that Brandon either is or was reared in one of
the Christian religious traditions, possibly one with which I am
intimately familiar, that 1) strictly interprets Jesus' counsel to his
disciples to be no part of the world as demanding adherents abstain from
participation in any activity that cannot be strictly construed as
neutral regarding the world's political (and other) affairs; 2) strictly
interprets Old and New Testament counsel to worship the only true God
and reject as false idol worship any allegiance to another god or its
symbol/representation. Either of these forbids their military service
and their participating in any ritual that pledges an adherent 's
allegiance or devotion to anything/anyone but God. It is absolutely in
no way intended as a position of any kind in opposition to or support
of any particular country or its government or its policies. Adherents
of such religions living in every country on the globe can be found
abstaining in the same way from such activities and rituals in their
respective societies. Most are able to do so in a much less conspicuous
way than Brandon, but absolutely nothing about the belief or abstention
is a matter of patriotism or the lack thereof.
Not that it may make a difference to his detractors if a version of
Christian belief is the reason for Brandon's actions, but if it is he may
decide he needs to be more forthcoming with an explanation and at least
take the heat for the right reason. He will not be the first pro athlete
to face such a predicament. If he, like others before him, is acting out
of conscience, the negative fallout is irrelevant and he should,
respectfully and with appropriate sensitivity to others' beliefs, refuse
to allow it to influence what he does or affect him in any way.

Brandon's reasons for declining participation in what he considers
"nationalistic" gestures turn out to be what I strongly suspect, if his
does not turn out to be one of the finest, most upstanding characters

I doubt that it is religious in that tradition. He just started this 2
seasons ago after 4 years of college and 2 NBA seasons. And if it was a
7 day adventist type motivation, I am sure he would have just said so
and not caved in with 'if it bothers enough people I will join the team'

Yes, this did give me pause in my speculating as conscientious
positions don't usually offer to cave so readily 8^o. Whatever his
reason, though, he's entitled to it without harassment as long as he
tries to keep it respectful and not needlessly offensive.
