Dealing with criticism

Whether it has been constructive or negative criticism, Derek Fisher always
has used it to push himself to work even harder, to strive for more.

Fisher has come under heavy criticism from Lakers fans this season, and he's
taking it all in stride. Fisher is 35, a 14-year veteran, and has to defend
some of the best and quickest point guards in the NBA every game.

His offense has not been what he would like -- Fisher is making just 36% of
his shots and averaging 6.1 points. But the one thing Fisher holds on to is
"that the sun is going to shine when it's supposed to."

It did during the NBA Finals in June when Fisher made two memorable
three-pointers in Game 4 against the Orlando Magic that placed him in Lakers
lore forever.

"It's funny and comical to me more than anything because it doesn't matter
what you do," Fisher said, smiling. "When you have your moments that [fans]
choose to not like how you're playing or not like the way things look out
there, they are going to say you've got to go. . . . Fans are going to be
that way."

But fans don't see him shooting jumpers after practice -- free-throw-line
jumpers, three-pointers, bank shots, corner shots, all in an attempt to stay
sharp, to find his groove, to get his shot ready.

In Fisher's eyes, it's all about how he feels about his play, how his
teammates and coaches respect what he brings every game. "I appreciate the
positive, supporting fans," Fisher said. "The negative comments, I don't
even worry about that."

He doesn't care and it doesn't matter.
Derrick Fisher has the full backing of his coaches, his fellow
teammates, and most important, Laker management and the owner
of the team. These are the people who control his basketball
career at this point in time. They are truely knowledgable
basketball professionals with proven track records of being
extremely successful.

The Lakers will go on to win championships with or without
Derrick Fisher. That's because of the winning attitude of the
entire organization and the Buss family. It makes absolutely
no difference whether his abilities on the court turn our
stomaches or whether we love his play. There are many times
where I've been amazed at Fisher missing a shot he should have
made, or not being able to keep up with the younger, faster
guards. But there have also been many times where I've been
amazed because he also has the ability to make those game
winning shots.

Jordan Farmer or Shannon Brown will most likely step into
Derrick's shoes and one of them start in his place someday.
But for now, the position of Laker's mamagement is that
Derrick will continue to be the starting guard and it makes no
difference what anyone outside the organization thinks.

Nothing to do with Laker management - it's PJ's decision all
the way. I still think his minutes need to go down.

Don't see it happening this year. They need Fish's steadying influence
in the offense.

Steadying influence doesn't offset lack of production.

Last 10 games 25 mpg, season 27 compared to 29 last year.

Pretty close.

Per 100 possessions
Personally he is 8.3 PG opponent 17.9 net -9.6

But team wise with fisher on the floor
the team is +10.9 off the floor -2.5 net +13.4

Not just who he plays with and starting...
Bynum is personally +10 vs the opponent center
while his on/off the floor is +7.9.
And Odom on/off is +1.9

No doubt about it that Fish's minutes need to go down. By
continuing to give him all the playing time he is currently
getting it will only slow both Jordan's and Shannon's progress
towards taking over in the Laker's starting guard position,
replacing Derrick. Luckily for the Lakers, they have
incredible players so overall, playing Derrick as much as Phil
does, it isn't really hurting the team in the win/loss column.
I would personally like to see Shannon starting and Fish
coming off the bench in his place for awhile. Let's see what
Shannon can really do. Then give Jordan the same opportunity
to start for a number of games to show if he is really capable
of being the Laker's starting guard. Why not let Shannon start
for the month of December and then let Jordan start for the
month of January with Derrick saving his legs by the decreased
minutes on the 2nd team. Then if neither Shannon nor Jordan
works out, the Lakers can bring Derrick back on the 1st team,
and the gain will be that he has a fresher set of legs for the
busy 2nd half of the season and the team's playoff run.

You are right; Derrick influence on the other Laker players is
truly wonderful. He is a very sincere, caring person who has
extremely diligent work ethics. The Lakers benefit tremendously
by having a player with these kinds of qualities in their
organization. Reducing Derrick's minutes would in no way reduce
or take away from the example he sets for the other players.

The time has come to start bring either Jordan or Shannon along,
now. As I mentioned in another post, I think each should be
given a month with the 1st team to see what they are rewally
capable of doing. By playing Derrick on the 2nd team for two
months will help save his legs, should neither Jordan or Shannon
work out.

Not to mention that everyone says he gives the team stability
and the place they need stability is when the bench is in the
game - not when the starters are in (esp after Ron gets fully
acclimated).

Disagree there. What the second unit needs is shot creation, more than
anything. Fish is a spot up guy.

That's why I still think the bench missing Lamar most of the year and
Luke now is a big part of the problem. Moving Fish would make the first
and second units weaker.

So how do you think he would do when Kobe is out, no need to double off
of fisher and they guard him?

What the 2nd unit needs to to get under control and play in the set
offense which they haven't been doing. Right now, they're the run-n-gun
unit - often out of control and taking poor shots.

Not if Shannon gets some PT and settles into the starting spot. I think
you're speculating even more than I am, but I'm not one of the ones that
thinks he's that much a steadying influence - I agree the 2nd unit would
go downhill with Fish.

Who ? There's never a need to double Fish. I think I don't follow
your sentence. What the Lakers need is a ball handler at PG - none
of the current small guys really fits that mold.

You missed a word...

No need to double OFF of fisher if he is on the 2nd unit. Now he has no
one guarding him. On the second unit he he will not be left standing by
himself for jumpers.

OK, you mean since Kobe isn't in there, they won't slide off Fish to
double Kobe. Doesn't really matter since he isn't hitting any shots
anyway. He can get his shot off if he wants - just fake the 3 and
take a dribble and shoot the open 2 like he's been doing this year -
of course he would have to start making more of them to help the bench.

That's pretty bad and this year it's .372 FG% and .306 3P% which downright
stinks. Lamar is shooting better from 3 - Jordan and Kobe are the only two
shooting worse from 3 and Fish can't make a layup which shows in his .372.

Maybe not league average for 3s, but 7 teams last year averaged at least 38%

Celtics 0.397, Cavaliers 0.393, Spurs 0.386,Blazers 0.383, Suns
0.383, Magic 0.381 and Bulls 0.381
#19th Lakers 0.361

Fisher's 2 point jump shot was good at 47%, the .397 on 3s is OK since
that is his main asset.
However it only put him 39th in 3 point FGP last year...
And 25% of his attempts were layups at .354 with 20% of them blocked...

Oops that is 13% of his attempts last year were layups.

So out of 89 layups last year (actually 'close' shots not labeled
jumpers in the boxscore) he made 31, had 19 blocked and missed 39
unaided...

> oh shit, youre just a hater...

He did however last year average .476 on 2 point jumpers. Which was a
impressive 5th in the league...

(the other 4 ahead of him however (all guards, Nash, Terry, Paul and
Allen) all shot well over 60% inside, and the 15 players behind him all
shot over 53 up to 76% inside with the 2 over 70% being KG and Calderon.)

Just bench his butt if he ever wanders into the paint again.
