DENVER -- Five years after the "The Malice at the Palace,'' Ron Artest
isn't showing remorse. In fact, one could say he is embracing his
infamous place in history.
Artest, a Lakers forward, said in an interview Friday with FanHouse he's
making a movie about his life. He said he made sure to touch upon the
Nov. 19, 2004 brawl at the Palace of Auburn Hills in order to "kind of
spice up the movie a little bit.''
In that basketbrawl, Artest, then with Indiana, charged into the stands
in the final minute of a game at Detroit after a fight had broken out
and a fan had thrown a cup of beer at Artest. The game was called, and
there were nine players suspended for a total of 146 games. Artest got
the worst penalty, being sat down for the final 73 games of the season.
Thursday marks the fifth-year anniversary, and Artest will play that
night at home against Chicago. Artest, who celebrated his 30th birthday
Friday, was asked if he's matured and is a different person since the brawl.
"Not really,'' he said before the Lakers were crushed by Denver 105-79
at the Pepsi Center. "I'm the same person.''
Artest then was asked if it was just a bad night for him.
"It wasn't a bad night for me,'' he said. "It was a bad night for
everybody else.''
Artest doesn't shy away from that night. In fact, he made sure he
included material on the brawl in a movie he told FanHouse he's making
about his life called Therapy.
"I didn't even realize it was the fifth-year anniversary,'' Artest said.
"I'm actually working on a movie about it. It's going to be pretty cool.
It's like a docudrama. I'm playing me. (The brawl) is like a small part,
but it's a part of it. It's to just kind of (to) spice up the movie a
little bit, but (the movie) is deeper than that. It's all true.''
Artest said he has a production company in Los Angeles called Tru
Warrior Enterprises, which comes from his nickname. He said he has a
''silent partner'' he wouldn't name, and the partner is putting up money
for the film that will be available next summer on DVD.
"There are some reenacted situations that happened before (the brawl)
and some reenacted situations that happened after,'' said Artest, who
said no actual brawl footage will be used and that "all'' of the
"various fights'' he has had during his career will be chronicled in the
film. "People will be able to understand what happened (in the brawl).
They'll be talking and acting, both (about the brawl in the movie).''
Asked about his abilities as an actor, Artest said, "Decent, but it's
like me so I don't need really to act.''
Artest said the movie will chronicle his time at St. John's University
until now, and touch upon odds he has overcome. Artest hopes there will
a message in the film for "people that get in trouble (who are)
high-risk kids (from) high-risk neighborhoods.''
"Just advice,'' Artest said of what the movie will offer. "My advice
isn't always the best advice, but maybe it might work for somebody.''

And at only 10 games into 5 seasons guaranteed.... most every laker fan
seems convinced ...I know Buss is a poker player but a $34 million bet
on Ron Ron's head staying in place for 5 years still seems as weird to
me as it gets...

Hell I already said I think Artest would behave at least a season. And
the lakers likely could have had him for a shorter contract or team
options, not like they spent any time negotiating, just handed him the
max MLE.
2 years and a 3rd year team option and I would have thought it a good
deal. But even if he behaves his defense is dropping off some and he
will be 35 the fifth year and have an option at almost 8 million.
As for the blazers the bench depth is evaporating, Batum out 3 to 5
months with shoulder surgery... Trout breaks his foot in today's game,
they say 8 weeks but it is the same bone as Webster last year when he
missed the whole season, which make the antique Juwan Howard the only
backup PF except a 2nd round rookie...
And bayless sprains his ankle before the game on some bobcat arena booby
trap...with Nate starting 3 PGs that left the bench pretty short on
guards for a game that was their 4th on the road in 5 days.
Martell and Rudy have been spotty at best.
Joel is likely the best bench player now...Oden has been great when not
in foul trouble but that is rare... that they are still beating bad
teams does not mean much.

it's a marathon and inuries makes it a crap shoot that's why PJ called the
strike shortened season *

Sometimes he still over thinks but physically he is fine. And after the
first 3 games (when I was wondering if he was the next Kwame instead of
Bowie) he has been mostly made of monster.
He just makes mistakes and picks up dumb fouls. Partly it will be awhile
before he gets any benefit of doubt...It is improving. Nate has him
rationed, 2 fouls in the first half and he sits out til the 3rd.

I think it ends monday in Atlanta. They are pooped, 5 games in 7 days, 4
on the road...on the longest travel time the league could devise...like
OKC then north to Minny and then back to NOLA... besides the hawks being
a good team good and a bad matchup.

he was slow getting down the court the day I saw him...it was a net game so
the picture was not great...I think it was the ATL game

From a training camp article:
In each of his five training camps, coach Nate McMillan holds a
conditioning test that requires players to run the length of the court
and back five times, or in other words, 10 lines. They have to do this
in four different sets.
Guards are allowed 61 seconds to do 10 lines, forwards 63 seconds and
centers 64 seconds. Players are allowed to �bank� time in each set,
meaning if they finish under the designated time for one set, it carries
over to the next sets.
Blake set what McMillan believes is the best time for any player in his
10-years of holding the test, finishing with 24 seconds to spare.
Martell Webster previously held the Blazers record with a plus-21 time.
Oden, meanwhile, post an impressive plus-18, which was tied for second
best on the team with LaMarcus Aldridge.

Well at least they have the best plane to be comfortable...Blazer 1 is a
customized 747 owned by Allen not a chartered plane. Plus the sleep
thing... stay up late, sleep in... to keep them on west coast time as
much as possible.

He is learning, it is just why they pay Nate to train him him...
This year it does not take him out mentally for the whole game. He comes
back and has good 2nd halves.

getting talent over character can be other teams stuff now, been there
done that... rooted for them at that....lakers are welcome to guys that

I have not questioned his talent on the court. When his head is in the
game he is excellent. Not quite as good as when he was DPOTY but close.
He has his faults on the court as does every player, but I expect those
will improve under jackson, heck they they already have. That he will be
5 years older in 5 years and making more money is hardly trying to
'diminish his talent', that is just how it is...He will still be good
because losing a step physically on defense can be made up with his
BBall IQ ahead of the game to some extent. Will Jackson still be
coaching? With his history I will be surprised if he does not mess up.
But all will be forgiven now by you all...=)

As a long time Pacer fan, I was a fan of Ron Artest as well. The
"brawl" was inexcusable and clearly Ron had reached a breaking point
in his life at that time.
Since the suspension and his return to the NBA, he's been a model
citizen. His time in Houston was almost entirely without any
controversy. Artest is a unique person and I'm sure he has demons to
battle everyday. I still like him and maybe his
docudrama/autobiographical movie will explain him to other people. Or
maybe not.
Can he stay out of trouble for 5 years in Los Angeles? Probably but
will he really be there for 5 years is the bigger question. Probably
not.

All the shit about the trade and being told to stay away from the team
in Indy, the players saying they did not want him back when he changed
his mind about wanting a trade.
In Sac only got his dogs taken away more than once for not feeding them
and finally forced to give them up... on the 5th police call to his
house in 6 months he was arrested for domestic violence, pleaded guilty
and is on probation still, suspended by the league for 5 games for that
and lucky it was not 10. If it had been Oregon with children present it
would have been a automatic felony and a minimum 10 games by rule if he
available to play and was not in jail...
Suspended by the kings at least a game or so and caused some turmoil.
Had some sort of public spat with the kings when they refused to bring
back Bonzi and other shit not helpful...

These anecdotes just bounce off people now. Artest is a benevolent
crazy. Or so we think. Being around this nuttiness every day is a little
different from merely hearing about the nuttiness in secondhand
anecdotes. I know for a fact he routinely broke plays on offense and is
still a handful behind the scenes, and the Rockets buried every 2008-09
story that would have made this patently clear. For instance, Artest
routinely walked around in his underwear in public places: the Rockets'
team bus, hotels, you name it. People around the team barely flinched
after a while. Before Game 7 of the Lakers series -- only the biggest
game of the entire season -- they finally flinched.
Here's what happened: Artest missed the first two team buses (the
ones for players, coaches and team personnel) from Houston's hotel to
the Staples Center and barely made the third and final bus, which was
reserved for business staff, sponsors and friends of the team. These
stunned people watched Artest sprint to the bus right before it left,
jump on and take one of the remaining seats ... yes, wearing only his
underwear. Owner Leslie Alexander happened to be sitting on the bus and
witnessed the whole thing. And you wonder why the Houston Rockets didn't
make any effort whatsoever to bring back Artest.

What damage did Artest do to the blazers? Hold Roy to 28 pts, 3 pts
above his season average on better than his average FGP in that first
round?
Or Rider for that matter. They got him for nothing, rode his best
seasons to the WCF and traded him for nice guy and allstar at that time
Smitty. It was the Hawks he destroyed for years...
Here is the list of the type of nut-case players I lump with Artest:
Sprewell, Rider, Iverson, Stephen Jackson, Delonte West talented players
that initially helped a team but not only had violent off court problems
but flat hurt or even ruined some team along the way, or are working at
it in West's case.
The ex-blazers I actually did 'hate' was Trent and RSO Patterson but
they do not belong on that list.

The player I am jealous of is Kobe. He has done plenty of 'damage' to
the Blazers...And I always took his side as soon as the facts emerged on
the so called rape case.

Sure it is Yao, Battier and Brooks I hate then, because they did the
real damage...
Artest hurt them one game. Think of the list of players I should hate

Back to rider since that is the argument...
After getting knocked out in the first round 8 straight years, getting
to the WCF was much appreciated. Especially beating Utah. Lakers and
blazers both got swept by the spurs that year.

A lot more to it than that. The risk was 'tremendous' with the colorado
laws it was basically a guaranteed life sentence and career ending...
and the jury pool was small town rednecks with their white women
'victim' of a black guy.
Sign that stupid statement and get on with his life was the best

Changed my mind, he will likely be there at least 4 years barring a
buyout...
Besides the guaranteed 5 years with no team options, he has a 15% trade
kicker.
If they decided to trade him say next season (because he starts causing
trouble again)... a team would have to gamble on his head and pay him
over 4 million up front, besides 30+ remaining on his contract, bringing
it to a nearly 9 mil average for 4 years.
